Day 37: Sun Room (4th Shift)

There were still too many things on Armand's mind for him to truly relax. The morning with Alec had been a help. And seeing that TK was going to be well helped him know that it was time to work out something else, but what? He'd already, without success again, tried to reach one of the club leaders about his sole idea of something new and different. Maybe it was hopeless.

There was no way he was going to play with paper and glue like a small child, and he glared at the nurse as best he could until she gave up on the idea. There was a free chair in the Sun Room--in fact, there were many free chairs--where he settled down to see what the new patients looked like. Prisoners, not patients. He felt bad that he had to remind himself. Even if he was crazy, he wasn't going to give in to Dr. Landel's game, not today. He nibbled on an overgrown cuticle and kept an eye on the room. No dozing today.

Oh boy.

"No, not at all," Kurt said, laughing. "I'm just a normal high school student. But your friend can make shields?" That sounded a lot like Jean. And healing... Professor Logan could heal really quickly, couldn't he?

Was this place full of mutants and Steve just didn't know it?

"Oh." Ururu fidgeted a little. Kurt might have been better off if he did have a power. It would have been weakened, but at least then he might be able to fight better. "Then be extra careful not to travel alone, okay?"

When Kurt asked about Orihime, Ururu nodded. "Yes. Orihime-san is strong too, but in a different way. And Shiki-san has powers, but she needs Mr. Mew to make them work. Lots of people have powers here, and they're really useful."

[identity profile] fuzzy-diablo.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
"Lots of people?" Kurt repeated. "So... not everyone here is normal? Like, euh, I am?"

Because he was. He really was. Normal. Completely.

"I'll be careful, I promise," he smiled. She really did worry about him, even though she didn't know him at all. Children were so trusting that way. Maybe if they'd met when he was still himself... Maybe if he told her...

No, Steve said to keep it a secret.

"Do you want to sit?" He asked, perching himself perfectly on the arm of the chair to make room for Ururu if she wanted. Normal high school student indeed...

[identity profile] bewarethecute.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, for some people, having powers is normal." Ururu shrugged. "It's just how they are. This one person from my world, Kurosaki-san, has a lot of power, but he lost it once. So Kisuke-san helped him get it back, and I got to help too." That had been a fun game of tag.

She was glad Kurt said he would be careful though. Some of the monsters were really hard for her to fight, and she was strong. She knew it could be even harder for him.

When Kurt moved, Ururu seemed to think nothing of it. "Thank you." She sat down in the chair, then looked up at her new friend. "I'm in a group. It's Lost and Found. If you want to come with us at night sometime, just say so, okay? Everyone is really nice."

[identity profile] fuzzy-diablo.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Having powers is normal... wow, if only Ururu knew. Having powers was definitely not normal. Especially considering the way he looked underneath the mask. Well, at least he wouldn't have to deal with that now. At least he wasn't going to frighten this poor child into possibly using her powers on him...

"Lost and Found?" Kurt asked, tilting his head a little. "Do you pick up things that people drop...?"

[identity profile] bewarethecute.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Completely unaware of Kurt's thoughts on what was and what wasn't normal, Ururu shook her head. "No. We're looking for our friends." The girl's head drooped a bit thinking about it, and about all the people that had vanished since she'd been there. "Sometimes people who are here disappear. My friends and I want to find them, and go back home. We haven't found anyone yet, though."

Which wasn't a good thing. But they would keep trying until they did!

[identity profile] fuzzy-diablo.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"People... disappear?" Kurt asked. He felt really stupid, asking a child all of these questions. But he supposed in this instance, he was the lesser educated of the two. And she seemed willing to answer questions. So far, at least.

"Are they taken by monsters or...?"

[identity profile] bewarethecute.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Ururu shook her head. "No one knows. The nurses say they get released, but...they just go. Even the shinigami can't find their spirit threads." Not Kurosaki-san's, or Rukia-san's, or even Kisuke-san's. They were all just gone, as if they'd never been there. Except they had been there.

Drawing her knees up to her chest, Ururu sniffled a little. She hadn't really thought about how people vanished in awhile, and doing so now made her sad. But it was important, so she asked as best she could. "People die sometimes though. The monsters kill them. A really bad one tried to eat my friend."

[identity profile] fuzzy-diablo.livejournal.com 2008-12-04 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, Kurt made her cry. Shit, this was bad.

"Hey, it's okay," Kurt said, trying his best to sound encouraging. He laid a hand on her shoulder. "Your friend's okay, right? That's what matters, that everyone's okay." He smiled. "I'm sure you were a big help."

Maybe...? He was only making generalizations and hoping that one hit on something and would make her feel better.

"By the way," he said, trying to change the subject. "What are 'shinigami'? And 'spirit threads'?"

[identity profile] bewarethecute.livejournal.com 2008-12-04 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Ururu wasn't crying just yet, though her eyes were starting to get watery. When Kurt touched her shoulder, she looked up at him, tears on the verge of falling. "I tried, but I don't think I did very well. Shiki-san's leg was hurt, but Orihime-san healed her, so it's okay now." Still, Ururu didn't like not being able to help her friends. That wouldn't stop her if she ever saw that monster again though. She didn't want it to hurt anyone else.

Kurt asked about Shinigami then, and Ururu rubbed her eyes. It'd been awhile since she had to explain, but she remembered that lots of people didn't know what they were. "They're the ones who take souls to the Soul Society after people die. And they fight Hollows; those are the bad souls that try and eat the Whole souls." Spirit threads were a little harder, but Ururu tried her best to explain. "Um, and spirit threads people's energy. I can't see them, though, so I'm not sure what they look like."

...

Grim reapers. Wonderful. Things just never seemed to get any more normal, did they? First he woke up in a new body, then monsters, and now grim reapers? Man, he just couldn't catch a break.

"O-oh. I've never heard of that," Kurt said. He imagined that were he actually a normal teenager, he'd have a hard time believing Ururu. But considering hours previous he had been able to teleport to the top of Mt. Fuji if he'd wanted, he supposed he wasn't one for disbelief.

"Hey, people get hurt when they fight, jah? I'm sure you did everything you could. If you tried, that's the most important thing."
