Day 37: Sun Room

Joe had read some of the larger notes stuck up on the bulletin board when the announcement came on the intercom. All things considered, this Landel guy didn't even seem so bad. Even if these people were held here against their will, he was certainly nice about it.

Apparently, the new patients - including Joe - were to hang around in the Sun Room or go to Arts and Crafts with the kids. Well, there was plenty of information on the board, including maps and descriptions of monsters, for Joe to prepare for the nighttime, when he could seriously get going on fighting his way out. He could look for where the boss would probably be waiting, or where his V-watch might be, and figure out how to fight the monsters. In fact, he had plenty of time to work all that out... but this the first time he'd had to really relax since he got his powers. So it couldn't possibly hurt to enjoy the calm period, could it?

The red-head stepped back from the board, and hopped back onto a comfy-looking couch to digest in the sunlight. He reached up to pull his cap down, and sighed when he realized it wasn't there. "Oh well, nothing's perfect. I still wouldn't call this hell."

Satisfied that the "Violet" was more likely to lie down and take a nap - a problem, for sure, since she would rather the woman socialize with the other patients - than start trouble, the nurse left her in the Sun Room, going back to fetch the other new patients.

Yukari, however, had no real intention of falling asleep. She'd already tried to sleep the problem off and while it was possible that expecting it to go away in an hour was a little optimistic and a better course of action would be to find somewhere to hibernate for a couple decades, now her curiosity was perked.

Violet Cloud. That was what the nurse had called her. It was no simple mistake; the bilingual play on her own name, Yukari Yakumo, could be no coincidence. Which meant someone was playing a game with her.

Well, if this was a game, then why not have a little fun? The first objective, of course, would be to figure out the rules. The purest method would be observation, which she would be doing, but in the meanwhile, there was that large communal board that people appeared to be using to communicate with, posting paper messages. Something obsoleted by the internet, but perhaps more on the level of Gensokyo and its human village. But most people would rather just meet in person to communicate. Seeing as this was only a single institute, the need for the board must mean either there were things that needed to be communicated to the entire population or, as Yukari guessed was the case, seeing as how the nurses, including her own, treated them, the schedule and movement was tightly controlled, preventing people from always being able to meet who they wanted to speak with.

The hypothesis were easily answered by just checking it. It was surprising to see that, despite every indication that this was a Western institution, everything was written in (somewhat) perfect Japanese. This was explained in a note about languages.

Most interesting, of course, was the set of "rules" posted by some "M.E." Curious that, despite laying out procedures, there was no stated goal. Since "M.E." seemed to be a patient, she guessed the goal was escape. Obvious enough considering it seemed the patients were here without their consent.

Of course, it could all be lies - unlikely, considering that most of the posts seemed to go with the same story despite being by multiple people, but there was still a chance - so further investigation was warranted. Who looked like a good target to pump for information? And, barring that, who looked the most interesting?
