Nightshift 35 -- Staff Only Outdoor Eating Area

[from here]

There were outside. Knives took a moment to look upwards at the sky to see the stars. It wasn't the sky that belonged to Gunsmoke and despite how long Knives had lived on that planet (over a century) he felt no nagging sense of homesickness. What had take place been but a barren promise of a wasted paradise?

This place was clearly an eating area, so he moved to find the kitchen that had to be attached with it, for now he was still silent even as Subaru was still traveling with him. He wasn't sure if they were safe out there.

Subaru looked upwards as well, but for entirely different reasons. It would take some charting and divination for the stars to tell him much of anything, and he was too on-edge to appreciate the beauty of the night right now. No, Subaru looked to the sky because he remembered all too well the bird creatures that had attacked the patients after last week's field trip. "Be careful, there's very large birds out here somewhere."

"Yeah. There's an indoor eating room, and then the kitchen. The door into the kitchen was marked as locked but not impassable. If no one else has been this way yet we'll probably have to break it." That didn't sound like a lot of fun, and it wasn't exactly something Subaru was built for. Knives was at least taller, but he didn't exactly look like the breaking-down-doors type either. But appearances could be deceptive--Subaru himself was quite a bit stronger than he looked.

Zelnick led the way out onto the patio, flicking his light over the expanse of it before turning towards the door into the kitchen-- then pausing, light going back to one of the tables, with its closed umbrella. Huh... could he do something with a five-foot-long stick? Probably... but he was more likely to be able to do something with a knife, so he moved on, for the moment. Still, something to keep in mind...

He paused here, glancing at the umbrellas again. They were still big, heavy, five-foot sticks, and they hadn't exactly found anything better, now had they?

"Tanaka," he said slowly, "is there any reason one of those," and he waved his flashlight over the umbrellas, "couldn't be used as a stave or something?"

Admittedly, they were probably taller than Tanaka, but there was no harm in asking.

ZEX followed along, still mostly wrapped up in thoughts of the creature and how its skin had felt. It was all over so quickly!

Ah, a question. ZEX looked at the rods, trying to think of anything other than the dead body he'd left behind. "It's a shame humans have so many bones in their arms... it really limits your mobility with such things." An idle comment, and then ZEX was fantasizing again.

Tanaka turned on his own flashlight to get a better look at the object Zelnick had indicated, and as he thought about it a skeptical expression began to appear on his face. It seemed a bit large for a melee weapon, and lacked the blade of a proper polearm. Then again, it would certainly have more striking power than a flashlight...

"It could work," the Shofixti eventually replied. Climbing up on one of the table's nearby chairs, he began to twist at the umbrella, trying to find a way to remove it. After a few moments, he realized that the lower switch was probably supposed to lock the object in, and quickly managed to detach the umbrella and clamber back down to the floor with it. Tanaka had to admit that it probably made him look a little ridiculous - standing there with a frilled pole taller than he was - but, well, it was better than nothing.
