Nighshift 35: Activities Shed

[from here]

Like every night before, the shed opened easily enough with assistance from a few well placed kicks on the lock.

Stepping inside, Archer swept the area with his flashlight. It looked empty, save for some cobwebs and equipment. Scanning the shed, he eventually found what he was looking for, weapons. Picking up two wooden bats, he gave them a few practice swings, getting a feel for them. He put them back and picked up some metal ones. Actually, he liked the weight of the wooden ones more, but the metal ones were better raw material for his swords. Satisfied, he quietly left back the way he came.

After what seemed an inordinately long, arduous trek, von Karma finally arrived at the small building. His triumph was short-lived, however. The doors were wide open, and from what it looked like, someone else had already arrived first and broken them open. No doubt, they had also ransacked the shed of the best of the equipment it held.

Grumbling to himself, he illuminated his flashlight once again and entered the dark, dusty shed. Perhaps the person who had gotten here first didn't take everything. He hoped so, anyway, as he didn't want this inconvenient and possibly life-threatening trip to prove entirely fruitless.

He searched through the remaining items. There wasn't much in here other than several baseball bats, a variety of balls, and some sports jerseys. All seemed to be of inferior quality.

However, he might as well determine which bat was the sturdiest and take it along. At least, it would be a far superior weapon to the flashlight he held -- and a perfect swing to the back of someone's head could prove lethal. Inspecting each of them for flaws, he selected an aluminum bat that seemed to have taken minimal damage. Strong and lightweight, it would still serve as a useful weapon.

Before leaving the shed, he decided to take some of the baseballs, as well. Small and hard, they would make great projectiles, especially in case of another monster attack. He placed a few of them in one of his pockets.

Satisfied that he had obtained everything of possible use in this dusty little shed, he left it.

He was relieved to find that no one else was in the shed, nor were there any creatures lurking in it. Furthermore, it appeared that no one else had been in here since the first time he entered it; the bats he had inspected were still as he had left them: perfectly organized. This meant that he still had a chance of picking up a decent one, though perhaps of quality inferior to the bat he had originally taken.

Though the aluminum bat he decided to take had a few more dents than the original one (which, as he cursed inwardly, was now in the damned rookie defense lawyer's possession), it still seemed strong enough to suit his current needs. His goal at the moment was merely to return to his room for the night so that he could regain his energy and think through his next attempt to destroy both the sniveling Edgeworth brat and the impetuous, self-righteous Mr. Wright. The bat would aid him in walking back as well as providing a stopgap measure for defending himself until he could procure a much better weapon.

Before leaving the shed, he sat down to rest for a few minutes, gripping the bat in his hands in a defensive pose in case something came in and tried to attack him. He hated sitting on the filthy ground, but his only other option was to run the risk of collapse from exhaustion in the middle of a potentially dangerous situation. Besides, this granted some much-needed temporary relief for his aching shoulder and arms, as well as the increasing discomfort from the contusion on his torso.
