Nightshift 35: West Wing, North Hall 1-B

((From here.))

As Claude continued up the hallway, he made sure to walk slowly and quietly. So far it looked like he was the only person around here, making him an easy target in an ambush or something. A small part of him realized he didn't have the same knack for spotting an incoming attack like Ashton or Dias. Still, that didn't mean he couldn't at least try, right? Maybe the limitations Landel's had placed on him made him sub-par in some people's eyes, but he would still do his best.

His flashlight passed over an entrance into another block of rooms, and the blond paused. Was this where he needed to go? There was only one way to find out.

After briefly casting a glance over his shoulder, Claude ventured into the next hallway.

It was still pretty empty when Yuuhi got out into the main hall. It was hard to carry all the metal pots and pans, but he did his best. It was much easier than it'd been last night at least; injuries made it hard to work on just about anything.

He darted onward down the hall, trying to keep the noise to a minimum.

Seeing that nobody was here yet, Archer propped himself against the wall, leisurely glancing in both directions every once in awhile. Despite his relaxed posture, his senses were wide awake and fully alert. He wasn't going to let himself be easy pickings for some monster. Hopefully the members of his team would be there shortly.

"Archer." Celes murmured as she walked up the hall. He seemed to have amassed a collection of weapons, something the general had not expected. What a pleasant surprise.

"You've not been waiting long?" she asked, and crossed her arms comfortably.

The next hallway was just as clear as the last which was a good thing. It made Lucivar's trip that much quicker. He spent little time walking down the hall before he turned the corner and entered the next hallway.

Early in the night as it was, things were still calm, and the halls, while not empty, weren't full of brawls either. Renji moved quickly away from his block, pausing for a moment in a doorway to get a sense of what direction Lucivar might be in. It was, in a way, eerily like looking for himself.

It helped that Lucivar wasn't far away at all, either.

Renji rounded the corner and went a little way down the hall, to meet up with the man. "Hey," he said, quietly.

It was rather a surprise to see that this hallway was not much busier than the previous smaller one. Was it still so early in the night? The dangers increased with the lower number of patients, but Xelloss continued on, sure that at least the main hallway that ran along the front of the Institute would have some likely individual or another, so long as he kept his eyes open. So to speak.

He walked fairly boldly down the hall; it had only been a few minutes since they'd come from there, and he didn't hear anything that would indicate danger. Renji paused at the doorway at the end of the hall and listened, then cautiously sniffed at the air for good measure. "So far, so good," he said. "We'll stick by the building, then over the wall and into the cafeteria quick as we can. Hopefully there'll be less bullshit than normal in there."

Rangiku followed quickly after the two men, silent in her socked feet, her katana held carefully by her side and the shield strapped around her arm so that it was out of the way. "Sounds fine to me," she said dryly, remembering similar encounters in the Sun Room. "At least the field has a little more room to maneuver."

Reaching the next hallway on his own, Guy tried not to think too hard about Okita and whatever the man was going through. He knew it was more or less out of his hands, and he could only help as much as his roommate let him, but that didn't mean he wasn't left wringing his hands over the whole thing.

Right now, though, he had to focus on whatever Ion needed him for. He was surprised by just how out of the way the Fon Master's room was, unless the young man had picked this spot because it would be more private. Guy knew that he couldn't get too hung up on it, especially since he would be finding out soon enough, and so he headed past the other patients in the hall and through the door into the patient block.

For what it was worth, the patients certainly seemed to start their nights efficently enough. If Mello's idea regarding time dilation hadn't been based mostly on a completely faulty interpretation of scientific theory, Near might have believed it to be a more promising sign. As it was, this hallway presented nothing new. It was, however, significantly closer to his goal, and Near headed inside the block of patient rooms that were the highest numbered assigned to males.

"Nngh..." The voice got louder, surprisingly so. What on Earth is going on? What are you trying to tell me, Father? Is there something going on upstairs, or in here, or...or maybe you just don't want me getting near the man that killed you and almost killed me.

Edgeworth winced, feeling a sharp stab of pain in his head. He dropped his flashlight due to the shock, and it rolled to the ground a few inches away, clicking off. He cursed under his breath, trying to find where the light had fallen.

A moment later, he felt the familiar shape, and he picked it up again. He took another deep breath, trying to calm his shaky nerves; he didn't want Phoenix to see him the way he was right at that moment. "Breathe, Miles," he muttered under his breath. "You're okay."

The prosecutor peered down the length of this new hallway before completely entering it. The end of the hall was too far away for him to see what was there, but at least near the doorway, it appeared that he was the only one in here.

As von Karma slowly and purposely walked down the hall, aided by the bat he held firmly in his left hand, his eyes started to reflect a crazed gleam, and his bearing became even more resolute. Armed with both knowledge and weaponry to literally hold over Edgeworth's head, von Karma was now on a mission to seek out the boy. He would not stop tonight until he found the pathetic brat.

Miles Edgeworth... Where are you, boy? he called out in his mind, his sharp eyes glancing all around him. You cannot hide from me. I will find you, even if I have to search this entire hospital alone. We will meet again tonight. And you will join your despicable bleeding-heart father, freeing me at last of the curse you have both bestowed upon me for all these years.

Almost as though in answer to his silent call, the figure of a person suddenly came into view towards the south end of the hall. In the dim light of von Karma's flashlight, he could tell that they were crouched over the ground, apparently searching for something. He couldn't see who it was, for they were turned away from him. Were he close enough, he could land a perfect blow to the back of the person's head with his bat.

The prosecutor drew closer as stealthily as possible. He tilted his flashlight so that the angle of the light would not alert the person. He still couldn't tell whether it was indeed the boy, but in a chaotic place like this, von Karma could not afford to pass up any opportunities that presented themselves so well.

However, before he could approach anywhere near enough to prepare to strike, the figure suddenly stood up, their back no longer facing him He immediately averted the beam from his flashlight away from the person, but in the instant before he could do so, he glimpsed the profile of a familiar face. The face of the very man he sought.

"Edgeworth," he hissed inaudibly, a vicious grin on his face.

This was where she'd run into Manny last night, but Meche was at a loss for where to head next. Maps weren't exactly her strong suit either, but at least having one couldn't possibly put her any worse off than this--they were going to have to see what they could do to get their hands on one.

That door on her left looked a lot like the one that led into the women's hallway. It looked to Meche like as good a bet as any other right now.

Forte was pretty sure that this was where he attacked, and quickly looked around the hall as he entered. There was only a man looking like he was in pain but nothing attacking him. Now, it was up to the old man to pick a direction. "Say, what's your name, anyway?"

The kid looked a bit nervous in here, but Teisel didn't comment on it. The teenage ego was a fragile thing.

"Earth, huh? Never heard of it, but the ocean's a big place, so there you go." 'Earth' was a pretty boring name for an island, may as well call it Dirt Pile or Not Water. "Is it a big island?," he asked. "Maybe they're just from different areas. Anyway," Teisel added, glancing around the hall, "I'm pretty sure you're still on Terra."

That's right, he hadn't introduced himself. Not that he'd ever gotten into the habit of tossing his name around, but still it wouldn't do to come off as rude. "Name's Teisel Bonne. I'm...sort of a Digger, so I don't really have a home island." That much was true; any pirate worth his salt was also a competent Digger, and Teisel was more than competent. "What do you go by?"

He hadn't tried going left down this hall; with any luck he wouldn't have to. "It was down this way," Teisel said, gesturing to the south, "there's this massive corridor up ahead."

It was a difficult decision, the one Matt finally came to as he moved down the hallway in practically a jog. The items he was going after were worth very little to most people, what what they were worth to those that mattered might just be sufficient enough to brave some danger for.

The hall looked much like the other one had. It was both familiar and unfamiliar. She had no idea where it would lead her, but it still looked just like all the others she had walked through the night before.

Somewhere, Near thought he might have heard the faint sounds of struggle. But he even if he did have any desire to intervene, it wouldn't change the simple truth that he had no skill to offer, nor time to waste. Particularly not when he considered all he wished to accomplish.

So he ignored it, shining the light down what should be a familiar route, since it was no doubt the same path Brooklyn was led down on a daily basis. He did this for his own benefit, of course, since it allowed him to see straight ahead. But the light also made an excellent pointer.

"We'll follow this hall to it's end, then turn left. A short distance to the right will be a stairwell to the second floor. Once we have arrived there, we'll turn right, and be on the railing that over looks the Sun Room. That will be the quickest route."

Simple enough, really. Now there was just the matter of luck or whatever force determined the monster attacks remaining in their favor.

[identity profile] manhattan-red.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Brooklyn was very much aware of how to get up the stairs, but he didn't point this out. (Even though he wanted to.) Instead, he continued to follow along. He too caught the sounds of a struggle nearby, but unlike Near he paused just a moment, every instinct yelling at him to go see who was in trouble and how he could help.

He forced himself to keep moving. Too many people would be getting into trouble at night and he wouldn't be able to help them all. Not as he was now. It was difficult. If they came across a group close enough Brooklyn didn't know if he'd be able to keep himself from helping them.

The hallways seemed emptier than usual. Keman really was late. Fewmets. What should he do now? Valyn and Shadow weren't even together; their magic was coming from two different places. He couldn't 'hear' Shana.

Joshua still found it amusing, but as he walked towards more dangerous parts, he found himself wishing he at least had his cellphone with him.
