Day 35: Twin Pines Restaurant

(From here!)

Artemis walked into the restaurant and glanced around at the decor. He wasn't impressed, but he wasn't disdainful either. He simply smiled. It was nice... for a town with a population of barely three hundred.

The boy smiled up at the person up front. "Two, if you please."

Clark nodded. "Yeah. Hopefully we'll be able to get in touch with someone."

He wished had a pen and paper on him. If there was anyone he wanted to get into contact with who had resources, it was Lex Luthor...but Lex himself said he'd committed him to Landels, so maybe he wasn't their best bet. Maybe Claire knew someone or just wanted to get into contact with the police about this. Either way, it was better than nothing.

Claire nodded, sliding out of her seat, before glancing around the small restaurant and heading off in the direction the hanging sign near the door indicated the restrooms lay.

Several minutes passed, and when Claire returned, her expression was disappointed. She shook her head once as she crossed the room, then slid in across from him once more.

"No payphone by the bathroom," she answered apologetically. "I even asked one of the servers if they had a public phone I could use. He said no."

Clark offered an encouraging smile. "Well, we tried, right? There's got to be one somewhere in Doyleton. We'll just have to keep looking." He nodded toward the menu, trying to put on a positive face, both for Claire's and his benefit. "Hungry?"

Claire grinned at him and picked up her menu. "Starved," she admitted sheepishly. "And whatever it is they're making back there smelled really good when I walked past the kitchen. What about you?"

Clark glanced at the menu. "The hot wings look good."

He looked up as the waitress returned, placing his order, waiting for Claire to place hers and returning the menu before the waitress left. If there was one thing that he didn't have a problem with regarding Landels, it was their food. It wasn't that bad. Clark leaned his elbows on the table as he waited for their food to arrive, glancing around.

"This looks almost like we're back in Smallville," Clark commented, gesturing with a hand. "The Mom-and-Pop restaurant look."

"Smallville?" Claire asked, cocking her head to the side curiously. "Is that where you're from?" What an odd name for a town, she thought.

"But yeah, we had a couple places like this back where I'm from, too. Odessa wasn't very big, compared to some places."
