Day 35: Twin Pines Restaurant

(From here!)

Artemis walked into the restaurant and glanced around at the decor. He wasn't impressed, but he wasn't disdainful either. He simply smiled. It was nice... for a town with a population of barely three hundred.

The boy smiled up at the person up front. "Two, if you please."

"Not last night," Max shook her head and shrugged. "I was aiming for outside last night and managed to miss anything overly hungry while exploring. I've seen several of the things that hunt inside, but I've only heard tales about what people have encountered outside the walls so far. Then again, we could only get there as of two nights ago, so there's not a whole lot of information yet."

Just two days ago? That was kind of interesting. No wonder not many people had said anything about escaping. Actually, no one had, in fact.

"It sounds like everything's only happening recently," Wash commented.

"Time has a way of getting away from you in this place," Max answered, shaking her head. "It's almost as if it flows faster or slower at times. I'm not sure if its just our perception of it, or if it actually does. But believe me, there was plenty of things keeping everyone busy within the walls before Jill brought down whatever security measures they had keeping us in. Then again, a week here almost seems like a lifetime, and I'm heading into my... third? I think."

Wash scratched the back of his head. Maybe this was bigger than he thought. For a moment, he pondered asking what kinds of things, but decided to go for another question that might provide less of a "that can't be good" type of an answer.

"Who's Jill?"

The waitress came back just then with their meal, and Max waited for her to leave again before answering, taking a few bites of this 'country fried steak' stuff the place boasted about. It actually wasn't all that bad, if not a little odd.

"We don't know, actually. I'm pretty sure it's someone on the inside who's fighting the doc, too. If you carry your radio along at night, she'll occasionally come on through there and give cryptic hints or news or messages, although she's not as reliable as her predecessor. For the first while I was here, there was someone named Jack who used to come on the radio every night. He was a bit more helpful and even broke into the institute one night to pass out weapons to people who could find him. Unfortunately, the doctor found him, and he wasn't so lucky."

Anger flickered in her dark gaze as she explained about Jack. It still hurt to think of. "Anyway, that's when Jill popped up, and then strange things started happening. She hacked into the communications and blocked the doctor from broadcasting and she managed to drop the security around the place so we could get over the walls and walk out the front door at night."
