Nightshift 34 Staff-Only Food Counter

[from here]

They were nearing the point they'd retreated from last night, and there was no question in Seiya's mind now that they were the first patients here tonight, although they hadn't knocked any locked doors open. She didn't enter completely at first, using her flashlight to explore for a moment. Corners, shadows, both the floor and the ceiling. Unfortunately, the room was too small and crowded for her to feel confident that she'd seen everything, but there was no way to be sure she could see everything and not still have some creature come in from an unseen entrance. There was no absolutely safe route. She stepped in, leaving the door open and room for Leon, while muttering, "I don't see anything in here yet."

Melissa wasn't quite surprised to find that two people were already in this next room. Their tastes had been growing steadily stronger, so she'd expected to run into them sooner or later. Apart from a slight hiss at the extra torch light, though, she pointedly ignored them, despite the fact that one of them had an unsettling, yet mild resistance to her mindcasting. A resistance that was easy to ignore. They were probably coming this way for the exact same reason Melissa and Lia were.

"Through here, I guess," she said, indicating the only other visible door in the back. She was much more on the alert for anything dangerous now, and she didn't particularly want to be the first one through the door.

"It is," Lia murmured in confirmation. She'd been as far as the next room two nights past, though they'd not managed to make it any further once they'd been held up by the insects. Recalling that, she swept the flashlight's beam along the floor. Nothing there, yet. "If no one else has been through here, the door will be locked." She could only assume the staff would have replaced the forced lock; there had to be a reason for keeping the room beyond difficult to access.

She twitched her barriers back up to strength, rubbing the pad of her thumb over the ridges of the flashlight's handle in an uneasy fidget.

A small trickle of uneasiness - Melissa wouldn't exactly call it fear, not yet - was floating off of Lia, and she wasn't stepping up to break open the door. For a moment, the mindcaster thought about finding out what her companion was thinking, but then decided against it and turned to the door with an exasperated sigh. "Alright. Here goes nothing." She brought her right leg up above the handle as high as she could - which, considering how often she did this, was actually pretty high - and then brought it crashing down as hard as she could on top of it. It took a few more tries of the same method before the rusty handle finally gave way and the door clicked open.

"And let's see what wonders await us in here..." she murmured, walking slowly over the threshold.

The feelings of anger slowly started to dispel as Melissa waited like a statue next to the other door for Lia to come back out. Hopefully she would have managed to get something for herself, but Melissa didn't hold out much hope. The only thoughts she could get clearly were ones of more anger from that guy to add to her already foul mood, but none of the emotions had risen high enough to indicate a fight. The moment that happened... well. Melissa wasn't actually quite sure what she would do. Lia could take care of herself, that much was clear, but...

The conflicting thoughts only served to bring back the anger that Melissa was trying so hard to dispel. She resolved not to think about it and focus instead on what they were going to do now.

Lia's own crackling anger seeped around the edges where she'd lowered her barriers to gain better warning of other patients' movements, settling hot and bright around her. She stepped backward out of the kitchen, not turning her back until the closed door was between herself and the two still lingering there. "Let's go," she suggested, her voice icy-calm in a manner that did not betray anything of her inward sentiments. "We've a whole floor to check for further weaponry, and it should still be some time before daybreak."

Melissa was a little surprised when Lia's barriers lowered enough to reveal the exact extent of her anger. It had been a little vague up until that point, certainly not enough to concern her. But when she really felt it, glowing and settling on top of what was already occupying Melissa's mind naturally, she almost ran back into the room to deal with the source accordingly, if only to stop the agony in her own head.

Instead, in a remarkable show of restraint that was unusual for her, Melissa turned towards the door that didn't lead into the kitchen and twisted the handle. "Agreed," was all she said, but that one word betrayed the inner turmoil she felt with all the added anger seeping through her mind. Such a hot emotion burning her tongue should only ever be felt once over.

Damn it! They paused a few moments for the sake of caution, and two patients went on ahead of them. No respect at all for the fact that they'd been here first.

Cursing to himself darkly, Leon jerked a chin towards the door, so that Seiya would know he intended to follow, then he stalked after the two little girls who had so rudely barged on past them.

Leon pushed in the door, bat held defensively across his chest. The room looked empty, but that certainly didn't mean it actually was. He moved into the room, keeping his back to the wall, and did a quick sweep of the room with his flashlight.

"Looks clear," he called to Ken. "Come on in."

The child glanced behind him to check for unwanted stalkers and then stepped into the room. His sight caught whatever glimpse Leon's flashlight allowed, but what Ken saw was enough of a confirmation. Despite the general sparsity, the setting appeared appropriate for the serving of food.

"We're close," he commented. "There should be another door here."

Leon had already spotted the door. He moved towards it, bat at the ready. The door was pushed in slightly. Leon peered in cautiously. It looked empty, for the moment.
