NIGHTSHIFT 34: M-A Block Bathrooms

[From here!]

Halfway to the bathroom, he remembered that he'd given Kaito the wrong information about where he was meeting Weaver and realized that he and Robin would be waiting for him back where he started. Just great. Heiji broke into a run, cursing his inability to keep this kind of shit straight.

He threw open the bathroom door and began hastily whacking away at the pipes for spare metal.

(From here, (http://community.livejournal.com/damned/423701.html?thread=34748949#t34748949) AFTER the above has left. Just to be clear. Will repost if there are problems. ^^)

Takaya's eyes had no trouble adjusting to the darker space of the bathroom and he looked around. Someone had already been here... made their job easier though.

Frey, on the other hand, could not see in the dark. He'd grown so accustomed to being in areas where there would be other patients creating a touch of ambient light, or to following someone who didn't have trouble seeing. But now that he actually needed to work in a room where there were no other patients, Frey found himself in difficulty. "Ah... Takaya...?"

[identity profile] forgot-my-life.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
Takaya made a questioning sound and turned to face Frey.

There was a long pause.

"Fuck. I forgot. Shit, okay. I,uh... I can either run back to the room alone, with you, or I can just get these pipes and crap myself."

[identity profile] dawn-rune.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
"If you could just guide me a little, it should be all right. Once I have my hands on them, I'll be fine." Frey didn't want Takaya to have to run back to the room, nor did he really like the idea of being left alone in this pitch-black bathroom. But he didn't want Takaya having to do all the work, either! Still, simple destruction of immobile objects could be done mostly by feel... once Frey found the things.

[identity profile] forgot-my-life.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
Takaya twitched slightly. "Okay..." He would try this without touch first.

"Someone's been here before us, and took a few of the pipes. There's still plenty left. Uh... fuck. Okay. Can you follow my voice? Walk towards me."

[identity profile] dawn-rune.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
Frey nodded, assuming that Takaya could see that in the dark, if he could see the pipes. He stepped forward carefully, keeping the butt of his staff a few inches out in front of his feet. Hopefully the staff would hit any walls first, if Takaya didn't manage to warn Frey away in time.

[identity profile] forgot-my-life.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
Takaya followed him, stepping backwards a few paces. "Okay stop. Um... Turn left and move forward until your ... stick-thing hits the sink. There's piping right under that."

[identity profile] dawn-rune.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
Frey followed Takaya's directions slowly, and very carefully. When he felt his staff thump lightly against a solid surface he stopped and put a hand out. The sink was smooth and cool under his skin, warming slightly at his touch. He went down on one knee, still moving slowly, and felt around for metal pipes.

"Ah, I have them. Thank you, Takaya." Now he just needed to start trying to pry them loose. Frey used just the very end of his staff as a lever, experimentally, not wanting to break it but hoping it would save him a few bruises.

[identity profile] forgot-my-life.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
Takaya made a sound that was probably a 'you're welcome', but could have easily been a 'whatever' as he moved to oneof the previously worked over holes. Pulling back his foot (clad in the 'outdoor' shoe) Takaya kicked at the wall, hard, breaking away more of the rotted plaster and tile.

Crouching down he started to see how much more he could break away from the wall.

[identity profile] dawn-rune.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
Frey discovered he couldn't get quite enough leverage with just the end of his staff, but rather than risk snapping it he simply put it down on the floor beside him. He wasn't really built for brute force, but it was going to take at least a little before the pipes were loosened enough to be pried free with the staff.

[identity profile] forgot-my-life.livejournal.com 2008-08-17 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Reaching inside, the hole too dark from him to see into, his fingers brushed piping and Takaya grinned. Wrapping his hands around the joints, he started to pry them apart.

It was slow going, but he eventually got one side undone. Now for the other....

Every so often, he wouldstop and glance around the room, not wanting to be snuck up on by something that wanted to eat his head.

[identity profile] dawn-rune.livejournal.com 2008-08-18 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
This was definitely not the sort of work Frey was accustomed to doing; hard work was no stranger, of course, but not this kind of brute physical labour. It was messy, and unpleasant, but it had to be done, so despite his unfamiliarity with this sort of task, Frey set to it with a will.

Once Frey got one piece free, it started going more quickly--without the support of that piece, the next one was less secure, and so on. Still, Frey really hoped he did not ever have to do this again.

[identity profile] forgot-my-life.livejournal.com 2008-08-18 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
There was a loud wrenching sound and finally, Takaya got the pipe free. That was a pain in the ass.

"Fuck," he muttered, dropping the chunk of metal to the floor and reached back for another one.

"How much of this shit do you need?"

[identity profile] dawn-rune.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 09:13 am (UTC)(link)
Frey paused in his own work and closed his eyes--not that he could see much of anything in the dark anyway--so that he could try to picture how much metal would be needed for his purposes. The pipes were hollow, but tolerably substantial nonetheless. Two lengths of chain and, ideally, two metal end caps... the end caps were easy, the pipes were already much the right shape. The chain was much harder to picture. "I think we're very close. Perhaps one more length of pipe each?"

[identity profile] forgot-my-life.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Takaya tossed aside the second length of pipe and went back for a third. "Alright."

It took a bit of effort, but he got the metal tubing free and put it with the other. "Want me to take you to whereever it is you have to go? Or back to the room to get a fucking flashlight?"

[identity profile] dawn-rune.livejournal.com 2008-08-23 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Frey had already decided that first thing tomorrow night he was going to ask Takaya how the light sticks worked, but now didn't seem to be the best time for that kind of delay so Frey shook his head in response to Takaya's question. "It's not far, and I'm sure there will be enough ambient light from the presence of other patients. Thank you for your help thus far, Takaya."

Stopping a runaway friend was definitely more exhausting than fighting a monster, in Adelheid's opinion. But at least he had, that was the important thing. There was one person in the bathroom, which meant that Adelheid had found his man. Good, hopefully this wouldn't take too long. "Sorry for taking so long; do you have what I need to make that weapon for you?"

[identity profile] grosse-sklaven.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"You can just call me Adel," the alchemist said with a quiet smile, still not sure how he'd gotten that particular title. Ah well; it worked well enough, and if everyone else wanted to make use of titles and codes, why not?

It did seem like Heiji was in a hurry, which was understandable. He accepted the pipes that were offered, mentally calculating the reach of Heiji's arms and how much weight he could carry, making a rough guess that probably wouldn't be too far off the mark. "A katana I can do. And tomorrow's going to be the trip to town... just tell me your room number, and if I can get away, I'll leave it there for you. Of course, if we can meet up there, then I can give it to you then."

[identity profile] grosse-sklaven.livejournal.com 2008-08-22 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Adelheid laughed good-naturedly as Heiji said that, waving it off with that same slight grin. "Yes, I believe that might be so. You can call me either; by name or title." He had started responding to both, after all, and it wasn't like he didn't know what was meant. ...it was just a tiny bit disconcerting that individuals might think that his name was actually 'Weaver,' but that was a minor issue. Didn't that mean that the code had worked a little bit, at least?

"No, I don't think I'd take it into town. I'd plan to just come back to my room, obtain it, and leave it in yours. At least we can be certain it will be there when the morning comes, even if you can't make it there."

[identity profile] grosse-sklaven.livejournal.com 2008-08-23 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
"I'll collect at some point, so remain safe until then." Despite the business-like manner, Adelheid still shook Heiji's hand firmly, the slightest hint of a teasing tone to his voice. There was something about the detective that made Adelheid feel a little bit at ease, and yet worried at the same time; perhaps it was how open and casual he was in his own words? In either case, Adelheid hoped that he would remain safe long enough for the katana to be made and delivered. He'd feel horrible if the boy died because of the lack of armaments... so, there was only the hope. Hope that he wouldn't end up like the last person who'd requested a weapon...

Meanwhile, Adelheid headed off to the Sun Room; hopefully, if he hurried, he could catch Edward before anything too bad happened. That was the best hope that he had at the moment, and so he rushed out of the room...
