Dayshift 34: Men's Showers

Albel had wasted an entire night, but he couldn't quite figure out how he had actually wasted it. He had left his room early, didn't stand around doing nothing and no pathetic worm had dragged him down. Finding Fayt's room and smack the foolish maggot against the nearest wall shouldn't have taken a full night, but yet he found himself back in his bed before he even had so much as located the right door.

What the hell?!

But he didn't have much time to think about it, as one of the wenches instantly stepped into his room as soon he sat up. Had she had been waiting behind the door or something? He ignored her useless babble along the way to the showers. Apparently, he had slept through most of the day. Perhaps the lack of sleep was taking it's toll, though the warrior wouldn't even think about admitting that thought. And who cared about it anyway? The days were useless!

By the looks of things, Albel was the first one to arrive. Not that he cared. After stripping himself of his clothing he stepped inside the shower area and picked a stall by random. It took some fiddling with the knobs before the water temperature was good enough, but he eventually let the water wash over his body.

"Of course!" What a silly question. "They're mobile, useful, somewhat prehensile, help indicate mood, give you information on the air, the scents around you, any movement, water currents,... they're far more useful than human hair." ZEX sighed a little. "You certainly don't need to do such things to them, to keep them in working order. And hair doesn't move at all... it's like you're covered with dead weight. With your tiny eyes, it's a wonder you see anything around you at all..."

And how he missed his head feelers. He never realized how much he used them until they were gone. He sputtered a little when the human came back with the water again, and this time it wasn't as unpleasant, although still a bit... intense, in a way. He squirmed a little again, trying not to let the feeling get to him, but it was such an odd sensation! Like being massaged with something just slightly harsh... hmm, was his face heating a little? Odd.

"I see." So big twisty whisker-things that could smell things. That was actually kinda cool, and even if Zelnick was only a dabbler in xenobiology, it made a sort of sense for an amphibious species. There were marine Earth animals that had the same kinds of structures, after all...

Zelnick couldn't help but smile a bit at ZEX's commentary. "It's not like we can help how we evolved," he said, "and the two eyes thing is common in pretty much every Earth animal with a skeleton." There, the conditioner was mostly out of ZEX's hair, and he should probably find a comb to brush it with soon... "And one of the defining aspects of mammals is the hair-or-fur thing. We can't really change that sort of thing."

... Well, actually, they probably could, but that would be almost Umgah-like levels of genetic tampering, something he couldn't see any human scientist getting the permission and supplies for.

(Unless they were Landel. But seeing how Zelnick didn't know what Landel's actual aim was or how he was funded or, really, much of anything about the powers behind this place... yeah.)

It was strange to explain something that was so self-evident... this must be how his human felt when he explained human things to him in return. An interesting experience... while ZEX was fascinated by all forms of different life, in general he did not expect that interest to be returned... VUX were normal, after all, and how interesting could a normal thing be, compared to the extraordinary?

"Of course! I wouldn't change you for all the world. You're wonderful as you are." ZEX smiled, hoping he hadn't offended him somehow. "So delightfully different... it's fascinating to me. I just wish... I had my own body to better appreciate yours... it's so uncomfortable inhabiting something so... borrowed and unfamiliar." And inhabiting something he could barely use, and much less understand, but that didn't need to be said, he thought.

Another rush of water over sensitive skin, and he shivered a bit in response. Was he getting used to it? He wasn't sure he could say this felt nice just yet... but it didn't feel quite as strange as it did at first.
