Day 34: Breakfast

[starting off in M13]

The last part of the night was little more than a blur in Homura's mind. The men had rushed in, but not joined them, instead staying off to themselves. Before any of them had a chance to react, however, a voice sounded through the air, mocking some other person Homura had never heard of, and the patients themselves.

To Homura, whoever that man was, he sounded a great deal like a god.

But before he could ask questions, the demi-god found himself no longer in the chapel, but some strange room on a bed. Is that what Kenren had meant from his earlier warning? Homura sat up, glad at least that the world didn't spin when he did so. Then the same man from before began to speak again, with a completely different tone. It was confusing to hear him talk that way, calling them patients instead of prisoners as he had before. Homura listened quietly as the announcement was made, then got out of bed.

Maybe he wouldn't have to go anywhere yet. It wasn't like Homura knew where to go anyway, and that meant he had time. If this was his room, and if he had been here as long as Kenren had said, there was a chance he could find something with answers. The Taisho had even told him that Homura had seen Rinrei. Certainly he would've written something down, made a map, something that could let him find her again! He started with the desk at the end of his bed, first finding a small stack of notebooks. Picking up the first, he flipped through, turning the pages with quickening desperation as he found each one to be blank.

It was probably the first morning so far that Willow woke up in that bed and actually treated the sudden transition like it was normal, getting up right away to go to breakfast. She'd never truly get used to the mental jolt, but at least she wasn't lying there for a good few minutes wondering what was going on before the nurse came in.

Willow wasted no time as soon as she stepped into the cafeteria looking for Hokuto. She'd never forgive herself if she didn't at least make sure her friend was okay, even if they only talked for a few minutes. Once again, the nurse was picking out food for her, and left only when she made sure Willow would actually eat it.

Willow's heart sank when she finally noticed Hokuto sitting by herself, looking decidedly worse than the day before. She paused at the chair across the table from her, smiling in what she hoped was a comforting way. "Hey. Do you mind if I sit with you?"

Hokuto smiled back when she saw Willow; as upset as she was, she was still glad to see a friend. "Of course not."

Last night was kind of a blur, but she definitely remembered Willow's group being in the refrigerator at the same time hers was... meaning Willow saw Hokuto puking up her guts just after she ran in. I'd be worried too, if I saw someone else doing that. But, man... did I have to get so violently ill with an audience? As horrified and saddened as she still was, embarrassment was definitely adding to the mix.

"How are you doing?" she asked. "I hope last night wasn't too rough for you."

"Compared with other Nightshifts, this one wasn't actually that rough," Willow answered as she sat down. "Strange, definitely." She had a feeling that pyramid-headed thing they ran into was the monster people asked about on the bulletin board, but she didn't see it long enough to determine exactly why everyone was so scared of it. Besides the obvious... giant monster thing. Willow wanted to go back again tonight, if only to finish what they started. It was clear that basement held something.

"But, I guess for you... there was a lot of rough?" she asked gently. "Are you okay?"

Hokuto looked down at her hands, braced on her lap; somehow she hadn't chipped her nail polish yet. "I can't stop thinking about what happened to Hisoka, the boy that alien killed. We didn't talk much, but... still." It didn't matter that they hadn't really known each other, or that he probably hadn't liked her; she still badly wished they could have saved him. Falis had taken care of his body--she'd have to thank her for that--but...

She took a breath, trying to stay in control. "And more selfishly, all the blood... made me flash back to dying. Remembering it on my own is one thing, but it's hard when the memory is so strong I lose myself in it." Dying itself hadn't been that bad, but it was the moment she lost everything. She had gotten a little of it back here, but it was only a reprieve.

"The boy that alien...?" Willow echoed, confused, although she had a sinking feeling she knew what Hokuto was saying. The alien in the kitchen... killed someone. Someone Hokuto knew, even if only in passing.

Willow desperately wished there was something she could do for Hokuto, but she knew that was next to impossible. There really wasn't a way to console someone in a situation like this. Still, she wished she could say something, anything... anything other than silence or 'wait, people can get killed here?'

All the blood... A memory Willow was all too used to experiencing over and over flashed in front of her for a moment before she pushed it to the back of her mind. She couldn't focus on that right now. "Yeah... yeah, it's hard." The redhead looked up at Hokuto, forcing a smile back onto her face. "It's not selfish, though. It's a natural connection to make."

"At least I still might see him again," Hokuto said softly. "It's happened here before, even when the person was killed here. Or, when this is over, if we're from the same world I might run into him in the spirit realm." She smiled a little, imagining the look on Hisoka's face if that happened... "Just great--what are you doing here?"

"I hope I didn't make you worry too much, when you saw me," she added. "I had an interesting life, but unlike my brother, usually not this interesting."

"That's... good," Willow said slowly, a little confused as to whether that actually was a good thing or not. Hokuto was smiling a little bit, so she decided to take that as a good sign.

So. People actually killed here could still come back as well? Willow made a mental note to learn a little more about that and find out as much as she could about what other people here knew. Maybe when she had all the pieces...

"I was a little worried," Willow answered with a smile. "If I was alone, I would have stopped and helped you." She paused. "Was it a good thing I wasn't alone?"
