Nightshift 33: File Room 1
[from here]
It took longer than Elle would have liked to break the door lock. She hated being so weak. But finally she felt the door give and found herself in a dark room lined with filing cabinets.
The first name she checked under was Bishop, but then she remembered that the nurses all seemed to think her name was Cardinal. Sure enough, there was a file on Jaye Cardinal. She tucked it under her arm, planning to read it in the relative comfort of her room.
She only wished she knew Sylar's "name." He'd signed a lot of his posts on the bulletin board as "Zachary" or "Taylor," but he'd given no last name and either of those might have been made-up aliases.
But she did know the name the nurses had for Eddie. They'd called him Mr. Lancaster.
The drawer on the L filing cabinet was even more jammed than the other had been, and she was still weak from whatever had gone wrong with her powers. But she was determined, and eventually she got the drawer open and grabbed the file on Mark Lancaster.

Renamon quickly moved deeper into the room. She didn't want to take much time here, even though probably spending more time would be beneficial. She wasn't about to risk the creature outside getting bored with the fight and heading their way. The room was far too cramped for that.
She opened the closest filing cabinet to see what was inside. Legal documents, schematics.... Anything would be of use. Turning on her flashlight, she flipped through a few before one caught her eye. It was the name the nurse had told her was hers just this afternoon. Akiyama, Reiko. She blinked a few times, then slid the file out to put under her arm.
"These are patient files." Not as informative as the Institute as she'd like, but these were definitely something worth knowing. Her mind worked quickly. She knew Yukari's name, and part of Orihime and Toboe's. "Do you two know the names they call you here?"

"They call me Bridget Cassidy," she said, flicking her flashlight over the labels on each cabinet, intent on finding the Cs. It took a few moments, but thankfully the staff was rather organized. Dairine's was one of the first files she saw in the C cabinet, and she resisted the urge to open it, merely removing the file from its place and looking at it. There would be time enough for reading later. "Is there anyone else we're looking for?"

Not in her case, though. What good would words on paper do for someone who couldn't read?
Still, she tried to play along for curiosity's sake. "Um, Sunhee Kim," said Toph a bit distractedly while standing by the door. The girl might as well keep guard as the other two grabbed what they needed.

Somewhat distracted, she answered Dairine, "I know two of my friends' first names... I don't expect you to look for them just going off of that, but if you see an 'Amaya' or a 'Tobias,' would you grab those?"
Renamon glanced over at Toph. Looked like the girl was going to play look-out. She approved. The least she could do would be to grab her file. She moved over to the K's, noting the locks. She cocked her head for a moment, then brought her leg up high and slammed it down. The lock snapped off, along with the handle. Of course. She pried her fingers into it, trying to nudge it out.

At least she wasn't in the basement. Though the arm had healed with almost frightening speed, the sickening crunch the bone had made as that boulder impacted it still echoed in her nightmares. That was an experience she was loath to repeat.
Nothing in the Bs that matched. Skipping down to the Ds, then...

She thoughtfully wiggled the pot shards in one hand. Her bending had obviously been downsized. How much was going to be an issue if they were forced into a fight, which seemed very likely as each second passed.
Oh, this probably wasn't going to end well.
"Hey," Toph spoke up, caution entering her voice. "I hate to rush things, but if we're not out in a minute, we'll have to fight that man."

She was startled out of her searching at Toph's remark; instantly going into her trademark defensive stance as she listened closely. 'That man,' as Toph put it, seemed not a man at all from what she could hear and feel. And the fight out there wasn't going so well either. "Agreed. One minute then."
Her fingers skimmed the files, looking for Kim. She finally found it and pulled it free, in the process loosening the one in front of that. Kilbride, Tobias. Well. Hopefully there wasn't more than one 'Tobias' here. She slid both under her arm.
Renamon called over to Dairine, "I found the one who's name is Tobias." She tilted her head towards Toph as she moved upwards, scanning the 'I's'. "And I found your file. Would you like me to hold onto it for now, or would you prefer to keep it?"

Toph's words sent Dairine's hunch kicking into high alert. There was definitely something out there, and it was not happy. "I'll give it a couple more drawers before I call it quits, okay?" Luckily, she could read very quickly, and file after file went skimming past her fingers. No luck in the Fs. On to the G drawer. She went as fast as she could, and in about a minute, that drawer was deemed fruitless. As Renamon had done, she stomped the handle clean off the H drawer, unwilling to use her wizardry for something so trivial. It looked like she would need it in a few moments, which was good, because the unreleased spell was starting to weigh on her mind something fierce. Looks like my tolerance has gone down, too.
Hitachi, Amaya. "Got it," she said, pulling the file out and tucking it under her arm with her own. "We ready to go?"

The vibrations flooding into her fingers suddenly indicated only three of the combatants in the entryway were currently active on their feet. One had collapsed, and although it had been momentary, the person's movement felt as though an injury had occurred. The earthbender's expression faded into a deep frown at the knowledge; things were getting pretty bad for everyone.
Finally, it looked like their task was finished. "I'm all set," she told Dairine before addressing both, "but the fight's a little too close for us to go rushing back to the hall. We'll have to try another exit."

Renamon moved to Dairine, taking the file. She genuinely smiled at the girl, even if it was slight. "Thank you."
She went to Toph and cautiously opened the door.

Rukia stepped into the room, but couldn't see anything beyond the doorway. Her own flashlight wasn't on, and Rinali hadn't yet come into the file room. Rukia closed her eyes, listening for any movement besides the sounds of combat coming from the larger room they had just left.

"We just need to get a couple files. Can you look for the name Kyle Brothers? I think it would be in the B section, since that's the family name..." Rukia was already squinting at the letters on the nearby cabinets. E... F... G... H! She pulled the drawer out and grabbed a handful of folders so that she could hold them up to what little light there was.

She held up the file, "Is this the file you were looking for?" she asked.
no subject
Rukia looked up, nodding when she saw the name on the folder. "Yes, that's it. Thank you."
She hesitated for a moment, again restraining the urge to open her own folder right then and there. Captain Hitsugaya had said that they should try to scale the walls, though, and who knew how much time was left before morning? Plus, there was Allen's absence...
"D-do you want to go see if Allen is waiting for us yet?"
