Nightshift 32: Stairs by Waiting Room/Lobby 2
[from here]
It wasn’t a great experience, walking around in dark halls hardly able to see and hearing other people talking in the dark. Wouldn’t be so bad if he could trust half of them, but Reid wasn’t an idiot--he’d at least been paying attention to that one lecture about people in a mock prison and how nuts they’d all got after a while. Total psychology to go homicidal in a situation like this.
So he continued to pretend they weren’t there, just like he did to everyone he deemed unworthy.
Opening the door to the stairwell, he paused briefly for Tyler.

"Can we try not to get into fights we aren't equipped to handle on the way there? Please?"

It almost sounded like Tyler was accusing him of getting hurt on purpose, which was not a little annoying. If anyone needed help getting out of jams he couldn’t handle, Reid figured it’d be Tyler.

If things had been less abnormal, Reid would have slapped Tyler on the back. As it was, he just resisted the urge and snorted instead. “You’re starting to sound worse than your own mother.” He put his hand on the railing and vaulted to the second step, glancing up to regard the higher level while he walked.
It wasn’t that the potential sideshow contestants in this place didn’t freak Reid out to some extent--that had already been proven--but from all that had already happened, and all that happened in the past seventeen years of life, his ability to be surprised was reaching new heights every day. From having facts about his own life spouted back at him, to the Phead thing…
He ignored the part about goading Tyler into using on him. “No kidding,” Reid replied. The Power was going to be a sore topic until he got it back. “Just don’t lose a slipper while you’re running away. The 100 meter dash isn’t your thing.”

The dark-haired boy shot a rueful frown at the back of Reid's head at his other comments. "That was just that one night. The same night my magic didn't work. I'm fine now. And if you start making Cinderella cracks, I might be tempted to try and knock you across another hallway."
Still his lips quirked, showing he wasn't really pissed, a hint of laughter in bright blue eyes as he glanced up at the blond ahead of him.

Reid felt his point still stood.
“And for the record, one freebie is all you get. Now I owe you one, so you’d better save your strength.”
