Nightshift 32: The Grand Ballroom
[from here]
Into the depths of darkness, Archer descended the staircase. Their trip took longer than he thought, in total silence, which wasn't actually that troubling for Archer. His flashlight was of no help at all, except for illuminating the steps. It couldn't even begin to pierce the darkness around them, almost as if they really had stepped into the abyss. After awhile, Archer noticed a light at the bottom of the stairs; upon reaching the bottom, he stepped into the impressively large room.
"Wow, so this is where all the money's going," Archer whistled, not really surprised as far as the list of things he'd seen before. "This is nice setup they've got here."
He took a moment to appreciate the place, looking around and soaking in the immaculate beauty of it all. Ornate fountains produced crystal blue water near the ceiling, vanishing into the floor. Turning around, he could see the massive pillars supporting this underground cavern. At the top was a expensively, tasteful chandelier, decorated with candles There were also candles along the walls, held in silver holders. Besides that, there didn't seem to be anything else in the room of importance.

It looked different beyond the trap door in comparison to the basic institute up above. Maybe stumbling down here was a good thing--the secret door probably wouldn't be on his map and he did need to go exploring in different places if he ever wanted some answers. Haseo looked around; a couple people scattered around, dark, cold--the place didn't remind him of any field he'd ever been to.
A great place to kick things? Where would Peony even---Oh right. The last time he'd adventured with the guy, he'd attempted to see if some things were like treasure chests in The World, which had to be kicked in order to open. When Haseo did kick the cabinet, the doors had opened and Peony made off with a lot of stuff that he seemed to like. Haseo grumbled, "You just want me to kick things so it'll get you more stuff." Not that he cared about putting fourth the effort, but if that was the only reason that Peony had went through all that trouble it was a little bothersome.
The rogue crossed his arms, and moped a little.

Ahh! He'd been found out. Haseo had discovered that Peony mostly wanted stuff. Useful stuff, stuff that he could show Jade and Guy. Stuff that would surprise them, even. He had to keep reinventing his image as stylish Emperor!
"And what's wrong with wanting more stuff? I collect weapons, you know..." He outstretched his arms, staring up at the ceiling and turning around. "Pretty wide place, though. Why don't you pick where to go from here? I want to test out your navigation skills," he laughed.
"It's not like you don't get to keep your share of the stuff, anyway," he muttered to himself, as a little self-defensive afterthought. Stuff was useful here, too! Guy's little friend Claude had seemed to think stuff was useful, anyway, and he'd just given him all his flasks and some more loot from the other night.. Had Haseo gotten any at all? Maybe Peony could at least share a scalpel...

One of those item hunters, huh. There were quite a few people that went around trying to hunt rare and unusual items, but the things that Peony had gotten last time were just junk. Some weird medical tools or whatever and that was worth collecting? It seemed like Peony was just an old packrat--not a collector of any one special thing like weapons.
Though he still didn't look to impressed at the admittance of being used for items, the rogue had to agree in an exasperated way. "Fine. I guess if we're hunting for items, at least we're moving around." Better to move around with someone else than alone. If they found things along the way they could deal with that as they went along; Haseo was never much of an item gatherer himself, so he wasn't going to worry about that too much.
It was a pretty wide area.. looked like some kind of ball-room or concert amphitheatre. Haseo took a good look around at the various exits, eventually poiting to the one on the west side of the room. "Let's try that way first."

"Okay," Peony said, walking up to the doorway to the west, then pulling on it gently. Nothing happened. ...What kind of door was this? It had angels on it, and demons and stuff... Kind of heavy stuff to be carved on a door, and the wayward emperor got the feeling that there was something huge beyond it.
"Uhh, it's not opening." He bent, shining his flashlight all over the handles and locks. "Won't even budge."
Gailardia could probably figure out a way to open it, Peony realized. He knew about the other blond's love for fontech and all things mechanical. Perhaps Peony could issue an order, emperor's order or whatever, to get him down here the next night.
"Maybe pick another one, then."

So much for luck with navigational skills. "Tch." Since that one wouldn't open, the rogue started off in another direction, the nearest door which was almost in southmost part of the area. They'd just have to go through the doors one at a time and see which ones would open and which wouldn't since they didn't have a key. "Fine. Let's just try this other door." Upon a yank of the handle, the door opened with a little bit of a creak. Not so bad.
