Dayshift 32: Doctor's Office 6 (Dr. Wilson) [4th Shift]
The morning had brought two new faces, though neither of them had been too much trouble. Caleb had almost bordered on friendly once they had worked through a few misconceptions, and that had been a nice change from the general air of hostility he was usually presented with. (Not that he could blame the patients for being hostile, but it did get old after a while.) As for Mr. Irons, he was a bit more difficult, but it hadn't worn on him as much as some of the other conversations he'd had with previous patients.
As for the afternoon, it offered up yet another new face in the form of a teenage boy, a so-called Kuroba Kaito, or Kyle Crowe. As Wilson gave the teen's file a quick once-over, he realized that he didn't see many female patients these days. He wondered if there was anything to that, or if Landel's just had a policy of admitting more males. There was always the chance that men became delusional more commonly than females, but it wasn't a statistic he had heard very much, if at all.
Sipping at some water (he was trying to limit his coffee intake to only before noon), he waited for Kyle to be led in.

He hadn't paid much attention to where his nurse was leading him until he realized he wasn't headed for the music room. He asked, and was told he was going to meet his doctor for therapy.
It was almost ironic, going to see a shrink after he and Hattori had just agreed that they couldn't go nuts.
When he arrived at the doctor's office, he took a quick look around. It was a nice office; nicer than most of what he'd seen around here, at least. The couch off to the side looked pretty tempting, but he steered away from it, settling instead in a chair by the desk.
"I don't suppose you'll release me if I tell you I'm not crazy, so how's this going to go, doc?" he asked.
no subject
"It's Dr. Wilson," he said, though he wouldn't mind too much if Kyle continued to call him 'doc.' "Anyway, this is just talk therapy. You tell me what's bothering you, what's been a strain on you, anything like that, and help talk it through with you." It was as simple as that, and he wished that some of the patients didn't make as much of a production about it. He knew that all of them must have some things they wanted to talk about, and yet he could understand why they might be hesitant. He could only hope that he was able to get some of them to trust him eventually.

Sure, there were other things that bothered him, but it was the one lingering concern he was willing to share. And it was on his mind after having lunch with the detective. His closest ally here would likely end up his worst enemy if he ever found out the truth, and he wouldn't be able to put enough distance between them...
He wouldn't tell Dr. Wilson that bit of what was bothering him, though. He wouldn't tell anyone that bit. Maybe he would have told Jii-chan if he were here, but... There was no one else he could tell.
no subject
"Yeah, I get that one a lot. I think all of the doctors here assume that their patients feel that way, but we have to try and treat the symptoms before we can figure out what's actually wrong, so..."
He paused and grabbed for a half-empty water bottle, taking a sip before setting it down again. "Anything else?"
no subject
Kaito shifted slightly, interlocking his fingers and letting his hands rest in his lap. He really didn't mind being thought of as a little crazy; he'd pulled plenty of stunts as Kid that most people wouldn't have dared to try, so maybe there was some basis for it. But if he'd wanted to be locked up for it, he would've just turned himself over to Nakamori and let the inspector throw him in jail.
"And there's something else; something I've been wanting to know. The way I figure it, if someone really did decide I'd lost it, they would've had a damn good reason for sending me here. I don't suppose you'd be willing to share that reason?"
At the very least, maybe he could use this 'therapy session' to his advantage, get a little information...

"Everything you listed is fairly normal for any mental institute," Wilson responded with a small shrug of his shoulders. "I've read a few reports about how some of the patients have had violent outbursts, so we have to take all precautions to make sure that everyone stays safe, and even then it doesn't always work." The patients who had walked into his office with serious injuries were proof enough of that.
With the second question, Wilson reached out for the kid's file and gave it a more detailed look. "It says here that you were caught stealing a precious item, and when caught and questioned about it, the details you gave made it clear that you had some sort of multiple personality disorder. Instead of being arrested, you were brought here." He set the folder down and glanced across the table at his patient, wondering if his report would ring any bells.

Kaito gave the doctor a noncommittal "Hmm" in response to the explanation of why things were the way they were. Somehow, he didn't think monsters at night were part of the 'fairly normal' set-up Dr. Wilson was talking about. But if the doc didn't know--if no one had told him before--then Kaito really might sound crazy if he mentioned it.
Another time, maybe.
His posture straightened when the doctor told him what had allegedly happened. The last thing he'd remembered stealing was Purple Nail, and he couldn't remember how that had ended... He'd been caught? He'd thought about the possibility before, but he'd figured there was no way Nakamori would have sent him to a mental hospital instead of a maximum security prison.
"Multiple personality disorder?" he questioned, hiding his worries behind his usual mask. What did they know about him? About Kid? "That's interesting... Untrue, but interesting."
no subject
"Interesting why?" he said, trying to keep his tone level so it didn't seem like he was too invested in the question. He didn't want Kyle to stop talking to him entirely, which might happen if he pushed too hard.
no subject
He looked to the side, falling silent. He had a bad feeling that the doctor had meant Kid, because what else could he mean? But Kid was just a mask, just an act... It wasn't like Kid was a separate personality. Kaito was Kid, and Kid was Kaito; they were one in the same.
...Weren't they?
"Let's pretend I believe you," he said, speaking up again suddenly. "If I have a second personality, is there any way I'd know about it? Would I remember it, or not remember it, or...?"
He'd pretended to be a medical student once, but never a psychologist. He only knew a little about disorders, but he knew enough to realize that the popular portrayal of things wasn't always how it actually was. He needed to get some facts straight before jumping to conclusions.
no subject
While Wilson was hardly well-versed in multiple personality disorder, he had studied some neurology and could only hope that it would be enough to help him clue Kyle in some more about his condition. If the kid showed more of an interest, Wilson could always do some research and bring the information in for next time.
"It depends, actually. Some people black out when their other personality takes over and only become aware again when they're put back in control." Since Kyle seemed to be completely unfamiliar with the other side of his personality, Wilson had to assume that was the case for him.
no subject
"So I wouldn't remember?" he said, more to himself than to Dr. Wilson. If he wouldn't remember it, then the fact he was missing some small part of his memory, the part in which he could have possibly been arrested, was the last thing he could tell the doctor. He gave the man a good-natured smile. "Then it's a good thing there aren't any gaps in my memory!"
no subject
"Like I said, I can't really say what form of it you have for certain, since it varies so much, but I suppose it's something you should be aware of, now that you know." It seemed that Kyle hadn't even realized what was supposed to be wrong with him, so this might just be a step in the right direction.
no subject
"Yeah, okay. Thanks, doc," he said. "Anything else I should know about it? Or about this other personality?"
no subject
"It's hard to say since I'm not sure what the specifics of your case is. This file mainly has details on your history, but a lot of the time people who suffer from multiple personality disorder tend to split themselves so that certain aspects of their behavior is in one personality, while more opposite kinds of behavior are in the other. If that makes sense."
Wilson wasn't sure it did, but he didn't want to tell the kid that he didn't know anything, either. "I guess what I'm trying to say is that you should pay attention to your moods and check for patterns."
no subject
"How often am I supposed to come for therapy, anyway?"
no subject
"Anyway, I think I've probably kept you for long enough," he mused, glancing down at his wristwatch before looking to Kyle again and giving him a small smile.
no subject
He looked back and Dr. Wilson and returned the man's smile. He wasn't sure what to make of any of this, but it never hurt to be friendly. "Guess I'll see you next week, doc," he said, giving him a small wave before letting the nurse lead him away.
