Day 32: Sun Room (2nd shift)

After the couple glasses of water Leon managed to gulp down during breakfast, the mage felt immensely better. He was still a bit tired, but that was nothing a little lounging on one of the sofas wouldn't cure. Stretching his arms above his head, he couldn't help but wish he'd had the chance to grab one of his new doctor's coats before leaving his room that morning. Maybe they would have let him get away with wearing it. Maybe.

He grabbed an empty sofa, pulling out the journal he tried to keep on him at all times. It was nearly complete now. Just a couple more pages to go. It might not improve his spellcasting that much, but any improvement was better than none. It was getting to where it might be too dangerous for him to use spells at all, if it left him so worn out without even finishing a monster off.

So much for seeking out company. It wasn't often that company actually found him instead. He gave the girl a pleasant smile and shook his head, "Nah, 'course it's alright."

He gestured to the seat across the table from himself, "M' Ichimaru Gin. An' who might you be missy?"

Shana sank down into the chair with a relieved smile. "My name's Shana. Just Shana." He had a strange accent to his words, but a pleasant enough lilt to them. She wondered where he came from? Not that she'd recognize it, likely, where it happened to be. She'd quickly come to discover that the world she knew as home was not one shared by many here, only those she knew.

"I didn't want to be a pest, but I wanted to meet more people here, find out if there were those who knew more than I did about this place. I've not been having much luck on the exploring end of thing, and the lack of knowledge was getting a bit frustrating," she admitted.

"Shana-chan..." he tried out the name, still having a bit of difficulty with all the foreign words. "Hn... sounds cute. Nice t'meetcha. You c'n just call me Gin, tha's fine." The smile never wavered. He could at least appear friendly when he tried.

"Don't worry 'bout it. I've been doin' much th' same myself. Sure be nice if we had a better way t'communicate things 'round here, ne?"

"Gin, then." Her smile brightened. "Yes, I wish the same. The board is so open and the nurses monitor it. And there's so many of us to be able to consistently meet to exchange information. Besides, there are too many different types of people around here. It's hard to tell who you can trust with what."

Although if there was a way to make communication among them easier, it might be a lot of help. She'd have to think about that later...

The girl caught on quickly enough, those reasons were exactly why they needed some other way to communicate. He'd already started looking in to a couple of different possibilities, but it was always better to over-prepare rather than sit and wait on a few ideas that might or might not work. Maybe Shana would have some different insights. Then again...

"So true," he agreed, shaking his head for emphasis. "Pity, ne?" he leaned back a little in his seat, getting comfortable, "Well why don't we do that gettin' to know each other thing, hmm? Tell me a lil' 'bout yourself. Everyone seems t'have a different story. I'll admit some of 'em seem pretty far fetched, but m'sure that's true for most anyone."

"All of them seem pretty far fetched to me, but then again so does this place," Shana replied with a rueful smile. "This place looks nothing like my world. There are humans there, yes, but most of them have been enslaved for centuries. The elves rule there, and have for as long as humankind can remember. Because of that, nothing like this was ever created. We don't have light that's not given off by a candle, or by magic itself. The same with the carriage that moved by itself. But then again, everyone's magic seems sealed or weakened here anyway, so I suppose I'm glad there's things to replace it. At least in daylight."

She cocked her head to the side to study him inquisitively. "What about you and your world?"

"You n' me both darlin'," he started, relaxing a little to help the conversation feel a bit more natural. He let out a breath as if thinking of how exactly to phrase things.

"If this here is Earth, then it's th' same place, but I ain't heard of anythin' like this before. I know 'bout this place, but I only come here now n' again with the work I did. I was sort of... an escort, to th' ones who died on this world, takin' 'em to th' next. Though that's puttin' it pretty simply. They got lotsa names for us. Shinigami, Death, though I can't really say I got a preference." He raised an eyebrow as though waiting for a response. Gin didn't much care either way, but he'd prefer it if people didn't get antsy just cuz of something small like that.

Shana blinked in surprised, looking fascinated at this. "You escort the souls of the dead?" she echoed, leaning forward, expression intrigued. Always curious, Shana latched onto this new concept eagerly. "Where do you escort them to</i?"

She hadn't run away screaming, a point in her favor. But she was curious and he didn't mind elaborating on it as long as he didn't go into too much detail. "It's like... th' afterlife," he explained. "We take 'em to a place called Rukongai so's they don't pester th' ones that're still livin'. It's sorta... a big town er... city. Has t'be big just t'fit everyone, y'know?"
