Day 32: Cafeteria, Breakfast
Sylar's gears were still turning as the nurse and a burly orderly escorted him down long halls and through a strange, sunlit room. He'd been forced to drop his pen when the orderly had seen it, and since then, he'd realized that this place had better security than he'd originally anticipated, as well as a large population of patients. It looked like he'd have to bide his time for now, pretending to be this 'Zachary Blaine' and trying to figure out how the hell he'd gotten here.
His mind went over and over the events in Mohinder's lab, tracing every second that led up to his unconsciousness. According to the computer logs and the decked-out loft, Mohinder was working for the Company now, so had that woman with the electricity been an operative? Was this all a Company front? Even so, it didn't make sense for them to drop him off somewhere without any close supervision. They knew how dangerous he was. How special he was.
But right now, his abilities had been nullified and he was left only with the option of playing along. It was a very good thing that it was something he excelled at, even with his sudden loss of the cure clouding his thoughts and telling him to do something drastic.
Still, it was fun to take ahold of strings and let someone think they were pulling him when in fact he was the puppetmaster. Who knew? Maybe he could find a new toy now that his last one had worn out.
Sylar took his syrup-covered waffle to a table and tried to keep track of both the security and the people flooding in. Soon, he'd find an opening, a weak link he could exploit. It was only a matter of time.

And Tomorrow~? :<
Speaking of good qualities, Zelnick had a great mind for the science of it all. Or at least, he remembered things and put two and two together real well. Brilliant stuff! "Yep! That's exactly how it is." Well, not exactly, but good enough.
I MAKE NO PROMISES. <3 actually, I might be out of the house a bit, and thus a bit slow...
Though his tone had been emphatically matter-of-fact, it turned a bit bashful as he quietly added, "You're closer to being a friend, actually. If you don't mind me saying so." He smiled back at Xigbar, a bit awkwardly.
Turning his mind back to the questions, he grinned broadly. "That's interesting. There's some parallels between your universe and mine, it seems, if only on those points." He paused, thinking, before asking, "Is your group of humanoids unique in using multiple dimensions for travel?"
Aw, that's a shame. But hey, at least you've got something fun to look forward to~?
Which he wasn't. Yet. But sometimes calling attention to that had a sneaky way of making people blush. The question wasn't answered quite yet; instead, the Nobody offered a lopsided grin as he continued, "It's weird to be called a friend, so hopefully I never get there. Glad to hear you aren't planning on breaking out the pitchforks anytime soon, though."
Ha, I wish. |D JOB APPLICATIONS ARE SO EXCITING.
Cupping his chin in his hands-- and, completely by accident and not self conciously at all, hiding his reddening cheeks behind his fingers-- he grinned back. "If I had a pitchfork, you'd be the last person I'd come after with it." Zelnick paused and considered, then amended, "Well, one of the last five or so. My parents would probably be last. But you know what I mean."
Pshaw, who's talking about job applications? The cute, my dear, lookit the cute! *points*
But he might not, so he'd just have to deal. 'sides, Zelnick really was kinda cute; who could blame him for teasing? "Yeah, I know what you mean. An' shoot, that means a lot to me. So... I'll give you another hint, just 'cause."
The Freeshooter made a circling motion with his right forefinger, that grin not leaving his face for a moment. "We're not unique in bein' able to use them, but we are unique in why we can use them."
Hee hee. XD
That same grin was also his his reply to Xigbar saying the lack of pitchfork-y-ness meant a lot, though it was a bit more bashful than embarrassed.
He took in the hint, thought it over for a moment, then asked, "Is the unique reason why... the same reason someone would come after you with pitchforks and torches waving?"
Of course, Zelnick is full of cute, so.
...in between the two of them. Yikes, perhaps not the right mental image.
What really did it, though, was how Zelnick responded to the other comment. It was weird, to have someone actually promising not to come after him... granted, Zelnick didn't know all of the bits and pieces, but someone as long-suffering as Captain Zelnick could definitely be fun to play around with. At the least, it'd take Xigbar a heck of a lot to compete against said over-affectionate stalker?
As for the question? That was number four, and Xigbar nodded enthusiastically. Really, it took some effort to not add in 'or with a giant key,' but so it went. "Yep, 'xactly."
As is Xigbar, really! <3 (Also, I'm intruiged by this mental image. XD I'M SURE ZEX WOULD GO FOR IT)
At Xigbar's affirmative reply, Zelnick hissed through his teeth and tilted his chair back on two legs, staring pensively at the ceiling. "Well, that must be fun. Prejudice really knows no bounds, does it?" Letting the chair drop back down, he stared rather intently at Xigbar. "Talking to you and looking at you hasn't given me any hints why someone would want to pitchfork you-- is this unique reason something more metaphysical?"
Well naturally, but ZEX's horribly perverted that way. <3 ...so is Xigbar, though...
Like, oh, a certain Gambler who could be mentioned.
As for the intent stare? Xigbar gazed back, a slight smile still quirking his lips up as he shrugged. "Used to it. An' heck, really, me an' mine kinda deserve the reputation we've got. We're not the 'good guys' by any stretch of the imagination. Though... bravo! That's how it is, right in a nutshell." Really, Zelnick really was doing a great job with his questions; Xigbar was kind of impressed. And, more importantly, he was entertained; what more could he ask for?
And I'm sure Zelnick could be... convinced... by his new weird-to-be-called-friend. XD
After a moment to consider what Xigbar had said, he grumbled emphatically, "Not being on the side of angels doesn't mean you don't deserve the benefit of the doubt." As he'd told ZEX, he'd met very few true evils or monsters-- or at least, very few who still looked evil or monstrous next to the Dnyarri. "But metaphysical, huh... ha, we're getting way out of my area of expertise." Everything so far had had vague parallels to the universe he knew and could mostly comprehend, but metaphysical was the specialty of the Pkunk-- and as much as he liked the avians he didn't have a clue what they were talking about half the time-- or the Arilou and the Orz, who he never understood. "I've got nothing, I'm afraid. And I don't suppose you'd be willing to give a guy another hint?"
Ooh, you make it sound so convincing. >:3
It'd make sense. ZEX did seem like an extremely emotional sort of being, and he could definitely think that he could feel 'love.' Especially if Zelnick had been half as nice to the alien as he had been to the Nobody. Didn't he get how
molestabledesirable that made him?As for the other part? Xigbar shook his head, wondering if he really did want to shatter the illusion that Zelnick might hold for him. ...nah, no reason to. "Guess you're right. Just a shame no one else sees it that way." He rested his cheek on his hand, grinning as he considered that offer. "Not another freebie hint, no. But if you offered somethin', I might bend the rules for you. Just 'cause I do like you an' all."
Moi? All I said is that Zelnick likes helping out people he likes! :D
Not that he was all that annoyed at Xigbar. Listening to ZEX for more than three seconds would probably make it obvious that the VUX had a lot of affection for humans in general, and for Zelnick in particular. Thus the stalking.
Sighing and trying to ignore the burning in his cheeks, Zelnick gladly let himself be distracted by Twenty Questions. "Trading for a hint?" he asked, with a bit of interest. "Sounds fair enough. Did you have something in mind, or do I have to come up with something on my own?"
[jfhaldjkhj THIS SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN SO SLOW but my computer literally turned itself off mid-paragraph D: thank god for "Firefox unexpectedly quit. Would you like to restore your previous session?" jahldk;asjk ]
Oh, I'm sure he would like 'helping' Xigbar and ZEX in that situation. ~_^
In actuality, it was because Xigbar had studied the heart extensively and had a good idea what the ZEX/Zelnick dynamic was, but like he was going to say that? As if!
The Twenty Questions (which was now down to Sixteen, give or take,) was starting to heat up, and Xigbar grinned again as he leaned back in his chair, cupping his hands behind his head with a lazily teasing sort of expression on his face. "I had an idea or two, but I'm kinda curious as to what you can come up with."
Oh, I'm sure he would... enjoy... it, once his brain stopped melting. XD
His eyebrows stayed up at Xigbar's invitation to start the bidding, not to mention at Xigbar's expression, but he took a moment to consider before offering, "I don't have anything on me at the moment, but I'm hiding a package of sweets that I filched from the upstairs kitchen. If you came by my room after dark sometime, we could share them." He flashed a grin at Xigbar, adding, "A double treat of delicious sugary food and the pleasure of my company!" The last bit was a joke, though he certainly wouldn't mind more time with Xigbar himself.
Well, if his brain melts, they'll just have to try again until he gets used to it~!
And oh, how very very tempting that offer was. Sugar was a natural like of the Freeshooter, and having someone willingly offering their company? Well, it'd be just plain rude to refuse! "Might not be able to make it tonight, 'cause I've got some things to get, but... man, that's a tempting offer. So, how 'bout this."
He stood up, as the shift was coming to a close
and he didn't want to think about how it had flown when he was with Zelnick, and walked over to Zelnick's side of the table, offering his hand with a grin. "We shake on it. You promise sweets an' such, an' I'll give you a hint to nibble on. Sound fair?"Practice makes perfect, after all~ <3
The deal sounded fine to Zelnick, and he took Xigbar's hand without hesitation and with a smile. "More than fair, even. I'm also busy tonight, so... tomorrow evening, maybe?" He didn't let go of Xigbar's hand quite yet, waiting for confirmation.
And really, who could be a better partner? ...wait, no, don't answer that.
And hey, it was a deal! Xigbar held Zelnick's hand in a warm and firm grip, then leaned forward to whisper into the Captain's ear. Mostly to see if he reacted like ZEX did, but also because it added just a bit more legitimacy to what he was saying. "Deal. Here's the hint: 'It's not on my outside that counts, it's what's inside.' See ya tomorrow, same time an' place!" And with that, he slipped away, grinning broadly and not giving Zelnick even the hope of catching him. He was, after all, the 'Free'shooter for a reason!
... okay, I won't. XD
Huh. Absently, Zelnick rubbed at the ear Xigbar had whispered into, watching him go for a moment before remembering--
"H-hey! I'm meeting..." But there was no way Xigbar could hear him, so Zelnick finished under his breath, "someone else tomorrow at breakfast." Damn. He'd have to catch up with Xigbar on the bulletin board, he supposed, or ask this A.F. guy if he (she?) minded extra company.
... well, more time with Xigbar wouldn't be a bad thing.
And on that note, a nurse came by, bundled him up, and took him to the first therapy session of his life.
