Day 28: Crossroader's Bar and Casino

[ from here. reserved for Reno. ]

White sneakers gleaming in contrast to the dusty floorboards, Dean approached the bar at a snail's pace, hopelessly immersed in his surroundings. It was a taste of something close to home. He was in his element.

And he loved it.

His face seemed to ache the instant he smiled his first genuine smile of the day. Previous shakiness in his bearing abandoned, he swiveled on a chair to allow his restless eyes the chance to roam the features of the tavern that really weren't as captivating as the hunter found them. His wry expression faded as he glanced disapprovingly at himself. These clothes made him look like some overgrown kid who'd taken a wrong turn on his way to the Nerd Convention.

Old man Mathers appeared in front of Zoro's vision with a quirk of his eyebrow. He set a bowl of peanuts down in front of the man and crossed his arms. "Need anything or are you just here to stare at bottles?"

"A drink would be nice," Zoro said nonchalantly, neither rude nor pleasant as the situation brought back memories of his original "profession". His heavy gaze didn't even transfer to the curious bowl of peanuts in front of him but his hungry stomach clearly took note of it.

From experience, most bar owners rarely, if ever, gave anything for free but Zoro figured that it was still worth a shot.

"If you can pay, you can have one. If not, good luck finding someone who's willing to give free booze," Mathers said in his usual gruff way. Most people wouldn't get any business that way, but his was the only good bar in town and people had learned to stay on his good side. His good side was actually quite remarkable - if you were a paying customer.

An upraised eyebrow and a shrug was not a reaction one would usually recieve after denying a pirate alcohol. It was a good thing for Mathers that Zoro didn't have his swords was not your regular pirate.

"Fair enough," The other man's curt attitude hardly phased Zoro but, then again, the swordsman was almost naturally matching grump for grump. He took a handful of peanuts (they were free right?) but stood up as if making to leave.

His stomach took that moment to grumble though and in a moment of surprisingly clarity, Zoro remembered that he hadn't eaten yet.

"Hey," He stopped and turned to Mathers, "You know where I can find Twin Pines? Or a metalsmith?" A dark but bemused frown found its way on to Zoro's face as he asked for directions. Asking another patient (prisoner) would be completely useless and, besides, he was here already anyway. He may as well take the opportunity.

As Zoro got up to leave, Mathers started to walk off. At least, he did until the pirate asked him some questions. This has been his easiest interaction of the day and it softened his behavior just enough to make him inclined to help. "Twin Pines? It's on Wicker Street near the auto repair joint. As for metalsmiths? None around here, unless you're looking for someone to fix a car or electronics."

Another one who gave weird directions. Oh well. He'd figure it out somehow.

"Hm. Thanks." Turning his back on Mathers, Zoro left the bar.
