Nightshift 29: East Wing, South Hall 1-A

[from here]

It was lucky for both him and Usopp that their rooms were just a block down. Not that he'd seen many monsters or otherwise around the patient blocks themselves, but the further apart they were the more likely there would be something that could stop them on the way. Here they had simply a short run between them. Granted, it would have been even better if they'd been in the same block or even the same hallway, but given the overall situation they could have been far worse off.

He took one more glance around, saw nothing and no one, and continued on his way.

He made sure to keep the glare of the flashlight out of her face for courtesy’s sake, shifting the face to the side slightly so as to still provide a little illumination. It was hard to judge her age; she looked really young.

Jerking his thumb at the cell block he’d just come from, he said, “Yeah, it’s just in there--should be the third row, I think. Are you meeting someone?” Ren paused, since an offer coming from a strange guy didn’t always go over well, but he didn’t know what the girl could or couldn’t do. He couldn’t not do anything. “Do you want me to take you? It’s not... exactly the safest place to be if you’re alone.”

She breathed a sigh of relief to hear she was on the right track. She just hoped Leon had waited! He'd said he wouldn't leave her by herself, but... even so...

"Yes, I ah... just got here a little while ago." Her eyes lit up at the offer. So there really were some nice people here! "Would you?" her hand covered her mouth in an almost automatic gesture. "Thank you so very much. It's very kind of you."

“When you say you only just got here... does that mean you only just arrived today?” His first reaction had been to say ‘so you’re one of the new prisoners?’ or something to that effect, which probably wouldn’t put anyone at ease.

Considering a lot of the stuff at Landel’s Institute sounded mental, even to a centuries old denizen of Hell.

She seems like a pretty nice, average girl--Ren smiled down at her, shifting his flashlight to the other hand. “Sure, it’s no problem at all. I’m Ichimoto Ren, it’s nice to meet you. What’s your name?”

"Yes," she looked down, shifting her feet, "Before dinner I met a couple of people, but that's all." The boy, Ichimoto, was nice at least, and it was good to know she wasn't the only Japanese person here, though no one seemed to have any trouble speaking it.

"Sohma Kagura," she replied, bowing her head in formal greeting, "pleased to meet you Ichimoto-san. I'm sorry to trouble you."

This time he waved his hand in easy dismissal, much more casual in his demeanour. "Really, it's fine. It's just good you've got someone to meet up with--hopefully someone's tried to fill you in on what's going on around here? It's a lot to take in, I know. It's like stuff out of a sci-fi novel."

Ren moved around her to grab the door and pull it open for her, the beam of his flashlight bouncing. Good thing they were so close, though he didn't like the idea of this girl having made her way down from the other cell blocks to this one by herself. As he'd already learned, not even these well-travelled hallways were free from the Landel's variety of fauna.

"I've been here for about five days myself already, so I think it's necessary to help each other out when we have the chance, you know?" At the very least, it seemed no new captives had been introduced during last night's debacle, which had been even worse than the night with the blood moon. "Believe me, strange things happen here."

Ren was right. Even in these often well-populated hallways, some things lurked and hunted for prey.

The sound of small insect-like legs scuttling along the hard floor of the institute gave warning of the approaching creature before its pale white carapace glinted off their flashlights. Two large pincers opened and closed menacingly as it's tail curled up over its body, prepared to strike its deadly toxins deep into its prey. From down the hallway it slowly but steadily approached them.

Kagura bit her lip for a moment. It was one thing to hear the strange reports from an individual, but if Ichimoku was warning her about the same things, then she'd probably better be careful. "Mm, Javert-san explained some things, but it was kind of hard to understand. Before I met him, the nurse stuck me with a needle and... everything got kind of fuzzy," she admitted.

He was kind enough to hold the door open, and Kagura opened her mouth to thank Ichimoku once again when her eyes caught sight of the giant buggy creature clicking toward them. Without waiting for her traveling companion, she let out a scream and bolted through the door.

"Sedation?" Poor kid, must have put up a fight when she'd first woken up. That wasn't surprising at all--he couldn't blame her. And sedatives made things more frightening when a person didn't even know where they were. "But that's good to hear, I'm also acquainted with a man named Javert."

There wasn't exactly an opportunity to say any more when the clicking of legs against the floor became audible. By the time he'd swung his flashlight around to see, the girl had shrieked and taken off through the doors. Ren eyed the scorpion for a minute, a slight grimace on his face. Couldn't blame her for that either. Damn.

Slipping inside, he closed the door behind him. Scorpions were pretty quick, but one that size would be easy to avoid. Didn't make its poison any less of a worry.
