Nightshift 28: Stairwell by Waiting room/Lobby 1

[From here]

Scar stared at the collection of platforms in front of his nose, contemplating how in the world was he supposed to climb them. The distance between each platform wasn't large, and the former lion guessed it could be covered within one step. Perhaps it was merely the case of stepping on one platform with one foot, and the next with his second foot. Like walking, only diagonally. The only problem was the fact he hadn't exactly mastered the human way of walking yet, and falling all the way down didn't seem to be too appealing.

He glanced at his traveling companion for tonight, and realized it might be better to see an example first before ending up sprawled over the floor.

"After you." he said.

The Star Dragon Sword didn’t bother replying with anything at the offer. He’d berated the feline enough for now even if he thought the answer should have been blazingly obvious. With a small huff, his now short human form walked by Scar and ascended the stairs.

Even with the stairwell empty, Roy was prepared for something to attack. The quiet moments made him the most nervous, and the stairs were a good place for a monster to get in a surprise attack.

He wondered if the second floor would be relatively empty, in this case, but he wasn't certain that would be a good thing. Once again, the less traveled areas were the perfect spots for monsters to ambush, and he was hoping they could make some progress before they were distracted by a fight.

They were in unknown territory, now. Mark glanced around but held the flashlight steady. Talking would be absolutely wrong unless Roy began it--there was some chance creatures like those 'nurses' were still similar enough to humans that their attention could be attracted by sound. If not, other creatures like the ones described...

He felt Killer's attention rising again, over Gorge's half-hearted complaints of an empty stomach, but there was no cause to give over control yet. I hope you'll keep in mind that Roy's on our side if we get into trouble.

I'm not stupid. Killer sounded a bit insulted, and Mark had to apologize.

The silence helped, and Roy strained his ears, hoping that he could be alerted to a creeping monster before it got to them. Logic had no place in Landel's, but it gave him some piece of mind.

Getting up the stairs wasn't something that took long, however, as tense as it made him. Once he was fairly sure there were no rats or anything else scurrying around, he quickened his pace and led them up to the second floor.

Once he reached the stairs, he slowed. The memories of the glowing monsters were still fresh in his mind, after all. After making sure there was no one coming down the stairs, he ascended carefully with his hand hovering near his sword.
