NIGHTSHIFT 28: M31-M40 HALLWAY

(From here.)

Artemis poked his head into Farfarello's room, and seeing that there wasn't anything waiting for him, entered. "Right," He stopped in the middle of the room and turned, "Where do we start?"

Why did the room suddenly feel like it was the size of a matchbox?

Aya helped Ken to sit on his bed, leaving Kikyo behind to close the door. He winced as Ken's arm slipped off his shoulder; a momentary dizzy spell throwing the darkness around to spin wildly. He moved to look for his flashlight, rummaging around in the nightstand drawer until he found the flashlight and extra batteries. The first set had been dimming already, even if he had tried to use the flashlight as little as possible. Right now he needed bright light.

"Hold this for me," he told Kikyo after flicking the flashlight on. He closed his eyes for a moment to get used to the sudden brightness, checking the bandages on his side and cursing softly as he felt some dampness where Ken's claws had punched holes to his skin earlier.

The door shut behind Kikyo with a dull click. He set the metal rods on the floor at the foot of the bed before he took the flashlight from Ran, eyes flinching a little from the light. Ran's room looked just like his own - small, sterile and impersonal.

He let his eyes rest on Ran as he examined old wounds. Reopened, most likely, by dragging Ken all this way. Kikyo wouldn't say I told you so, even if the thought passed through his mind.

"Sorry," Ken muttered, knowing full well who'd caused that injury. He'd hit it again last night, too. At this rate, Ken wouldn't be surprised if Aya wanted to stay as far away from him as possible--he seemed to be getting hurt at an amazing rate from being around Ken.

When his eyes had used to the light, Aya sat down on his bed beside Ken and started to unwrap the makeshift bandages around him. The blood had soaked through both the bandages and Ken's shirt, which Aya removed as gently as he could.

"There's nothing to apologize," he said silently as he worked. "Kikyo, mind ripping some sheets for me?"

"Alright." Came the calm reply, a bit empty perhaps. Kikyo set the flashlight nearby to illuminate as much as possible before he stepped over to the other bed to remove the sheets. One rip at the corner was all it took to pull a piece apart. And for a moment there was only the sound of tearing fabric and Ken's raspy breath.

"Step aside," Kikyo murmured as he turned back. It seemed binding other people's wounds would be his occupation for the night once again. Ran had his own wounds to tend to. But Kikyo assumed, probably correctly, that they would be ignored until Ken's wounds were wrapped first.
