NIGHTSHIFT 28: EAST WING, NORTH HALL 1-A
(From here.)
Why was everyone trying to convince him he was wrong tonight? It was very irritating, and wasn't helping Artemis' steadily worsening mood. Normally being treated as a child made him laugh, or at his worst, reply with a biting comment. He could only blame his earlier emotional outburst and all this ridiculous talk of feelings for this heightened reaction. It struck him that he was probably also disappointed at having the chance to prove himself snatched away by everyone around him. If he never got the chance to redeem himself, how would he ever survive this place? The frustration had been building long since this incident--but at least now he didn't deserve to be treated so poorly by people he considered his allies.
"Yes, Miss Sumeragi, but if I am denied using even those talents which I do possess, I tend to get slightly irate. You'd think I had suggested leading an army of infants into the basement," He hissed under his breath. "Instead of a simple castling."

And just a little further. Renji tucked his right arm more securely at his side and headed into the block.

The hall was still very empty, and the door between the halls still open. Renji turned right and kept going; the waraji he now wore made his steps almost silent.

Artemis realized that Farfarello wasn't going to say anything. Just wonderful. How had he managed to mess up this early on? Things were going to be hard now. Just perfect.

"I'm not sure that is the case and I don't think it's actually on us. This trip to Doyleton was just an extension of their prison. Whatever is keeping us under a limit had to have been moved with us. Considering how much staff was a round, not to mention the buses themselves, we cannot tale the fact that out power was restricted in Doyleton as an indication there is a specific item that's doing it," Momo replied as they moved quickly through the hallway.
"I believe it is an area effect and if we can get over that wall, we may be able to get out of its field." And then she'd free everyone. "But enough for now. We move silently now. My room."

Rukia was going too fast as she ran through the door to the north hallway. She took a quick left, knowing that the door to the nearby M-Block were close, and smacked her shoulder into the door frame.
"Ah!" she cried, grabbing her shoulder in pain. She didn't think it wasn't anything serious, but it hurt like hell! "Dammit," she hissed, "I wish I had my flashlight."

It wasn't long before he was back to the main hallway. He had to feel along the walls for part of the way without a flashlight. It was dark and difficult to see much. There was a door further down the hall or he could go back the way he'd come. He hesitated for only a moment.

Homura tried to move faster as he continued, blocking out the pain in his knees. It shouldn't have been this hard, but each night seemed content to slap him in the face with his own weakness.

It took more effort than he'd expected just to cross the field and make it back inside to the relative safety of the dark hallway in the institute. The metal stick clanked to the ground as he slumped against the nearest wall, leaving a bloody trail behind him. His breathing was ragged and fast and a feverish sheen of sweat was starting to bead on his forehead.
Yuuhi pulled his knees in tight against his chest, head down and thin frame shaking. The more his frightened mind thought on it, the more he convinced himself that he was to blame. In the end, that was always the answer.

Homura was a warrior, always, first and foremost. That was why he slowed his pace when he came to the next hall, the fresh scent of blood obvious even among the stench of the night-warped paths. He and Kenshin were better, yes, but neither remained in any condition to fight, at least not without weapons that were painfully far away.
But if they did have to fight, Homura wouldn't back down. He scanned the hall as carefully as he could, given the lack of light. While there seemed to be no monster, there was a figure hunched over, his posture practically screaming 'eat me' to whatever might come by.
Normally, Homura might pass up any such fool. But this particular one was known to him, and had already gotten his interest. That might be what saved him this night.
"Fai, wasn't it?" Walking up to the man, Homura looked down at him, shaking his head. "You know you'll likely die if you stay there like that."

Kenshin tore off his own shirt--despite the fact that it was still pretty stained with the nurse's blood--and untied the jacket from around Fai's waist. They weren't the best or the cleanest of bandages, but they would have to do. He applied pressure to the wound with one hand and wiped Fai's forehead with the other.
"What happened?"

It wasn't until the voice spoke to him that anything seemed to make any sense. His eyes had been wide and frightened, but he did his best to focus them, to force a smile, but it was so very hard this time. He glanced shakily from one man to the other, recognizing only one of them. His facade was quickly crumbling and at the worst possible of times. "Oh dear... ah... y-you're probably right a-about that," he replied to Homura.
The other was trying to assist him before he could say much more, "Ah- you really don't have to t-trouble yourself," he said, attempting to rise from where he sat, only to have his arm give out on him. He ignored the question without much subtlety.

"I doubt you'll be able to stop him." The demi-god gave a nod to Kenshin, thinking this little delay could work in their favor so long as Fai didn't die on them. It would give Kenshin a chance to help as he pleased, and create a bond with another potentially useful ally. Stripping away his jacket, Homura offered Kenshin his own shirt, spared similar stains due to the coat.
"Here. Treat him quickly, and we'll take him with us." Homura grinned towards Fai. "Monsters roam the halls, but I've yet to see any in the bedrooms. Since we're going there anyway, it won't be that much more of a burden to bring you along."

He accepted Homura's shirt with a murmur of thanks, quickly adding it to the already soaked wad of cloth he was holding to Fai's throat.
"Really, it's no trouble," he said softly. "You've been badly hurt. Here." He looped his free arm around Fai's back, trying to help him up. "Homura. This one apologizes, you're going to have to carry him. This one will do his best to keep pressure on the wound until we get to the room."

It took a lot of effort, but he made it shakily to his feet, his breathing slightly ragged as he leaned heavily on the redhead. "Sorry," he insisted on apologizing. "You're... very kind."

"Fai!" Rukia called, rounding the corner and jogging toward the small group. Renji was a little behind her, but she wasn't worried about him; even in his condition, the monsters here would have a tough time handling him.
"What happened?" she blurted. "Why did you run off like that??"
Before Fai could answer, though, Rukia turned to the young man supporting him. "Hold him still, please. I'm going to heal him." With all the blood Fai had lost, Rukia didn't waste more words than that. Resting her hands on the blonde's arm, she murmured the words of a healing incantation. As always, it felt like slogging through thick mud just to reach her own spiritual energy, but once she got hold of it, she pulled...
And directed as much as she dared into Fai. He would need it.

It was a short trip from one block to the other and, after checking to make sure Kenren was still with him, he ducked into the main hallway. How odd it felt to be wearing something so blatantly out of place...and yet how good it felt as well. He didn't pause long here and moved off to the first block of men's dorms as quickly as he could manage.

Renji wasn't happy to see the same old hall again; it was just one more irritating thing. He kept his pace slow enough so that Rukia could handle the man's ankle's and not lose her balance. He didn't know why she insisted on being so kind, sometimes, but she'd always been both the most kind and the most dangerous of them both.

Rukia caught a few glimpses of where Renji had been burned by the strange magic, but it was hard to see well in the darkness.
