Nightshift 28: M-A Block Hallway

(From here)

Tamaki's legs were burning. He couldn't remember when he'd run this far and this fast on so little energy. He was beginning to breathe heavily now, and swear, his heavy sweater and jeans not conducive to this level of activity. This wasn't like the stories or movies at all. This was painful and terrifying and....

But he had to do his duty. He had to protect and help those that needed it. He wasn't going to let anyone down!

The rooms were almost within sight! Allen breathed a sigh of relief. "You're right," he said as calmly as he could, "they shouldn't have children here. But that one..."

How could he explain it? Like so many things here, "You can't let it touch you," he warned. "The child is searching for its mother, but he's under some kind of curse. If he touches anyone, they get hurt, very badly." His ribs still hadn't quite finished mending after the incident a few nights back.

[identity profile] misterprince.livejournal.com 2007-11-28 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Curse, huh?" Sanji couldn't help but wonder if it was a cursed fruit. Had there been such a fruit listed in that book he had? There had been so many, he couldn't remember - especially not in his current state. He also looked over the fact that the child most likely wasn't from his world.

"Tha's terrible." The kid probably didn't even know what he was doing, hurting people while trying to get help.

He hesitated for a moment, hearing voices ahead. He recognized one as Allen's, though, which was a relief. And it sounded like the boy was helping someone. Renji smiled to himself; Allen was such a good kid.

Everything else seemed okay, or as okay as anything was during the night. He headed up the hallway that he figured Suou's room should be in. Almost there.

There wasn’t much further to go until they arrived at his quarters as it was and after initially scanning the area, the knight couldn’t find any sense of danger. He didn’t continue forward after entering into the next area, and instead, the knight waited just on the other side for Cloud to join him.

Cloud was not used to going into this section of hallway. He was a little glad that he had allowed Yuber to lead, since he had never explored the hallways to the dorms yet. He simply knew that his room was further north to their current position.

He paused when he found Yuber waiting for him. He raised an eyebrow in the darkness at the black knight, despite being fairly certain that the gesture would not be seen.

The others seemed to have things under control, so he hurried from the room. The halls were still quiet and the place as creepy as ever, but he didn't let it deter him. He had to find Rinali and the others and make sure they were safe!

Almost there. They only slowed for a second as they turned the corner; they hadn't run into anything expected yet, but neither of them wanted to take chances. Raine felt for the juice boxes she hoped she still had in her sling; somehow, they'd managed not to fall out. Good.

Considering the circumstances, she had a feeling the clinic would be a lot busier than usual tonight. The halls didn't seem any more monster-infested than usual, but with virtually everyone unarmed there would undoubtedly be more injuries.

Shadow hoped he was going the right way. If he was taking them to a dead end he'd never forgive himself. At least he could find a room to hide in until daybreak if he couldn't find the place the boy had taken Shana. As long as he didn't run into any monsters like those birds outside.

On his right he saw a door and figured he might as well try it.

Once again, the hallway was far emptier than it was on normal nights, and Roy suspected that most of the patients were still caught outside. It was disconcerting to know that, especially with how easily he had been able to get away, but he once again reminded himself that he would have been no help if he'd stayed.

His hallway was the one at the far end, though with no one to skirt around, it was going to be a short trip there.

[identity profile] small-fortune.livejournal.com 2007-12-02 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
The quiet hallways were strange, almost like a dream after the chaos outside. He reminded himself that the silence was an illusion; there was nothing safe about where they were, even in situations as seemingly harmless as a trip home.

Was that a deliberate effort to upset us, throw us off-balance? Or do the nurses and doctors so genuinely believe the reality they present during the daytime to be real that they had no idea of the danger in bringing us home late themselves? Though the reports of the board didn't give the doctors a clean slate even during daylight.

"Where would I best be placed?" Mark had to laugh at that, although quietly. "I'd thought I'd finally figured that out after over twenty years wondering, and then I wind up here." Not that the Colonel probably cared about Mark's personal issues, it was just so very...

"To answer your question, I don't know. I've been taking notes from the bulletin board, but there's so much that even with pages of my notebook filled I keep meeting people I haven't read a word of. Right now, for myself, I suppose I've been trying to get a better grip on who is here and what internal groups are forming--like your Cooking Group. Once I know more about the people trapped here, I'll have a better chance of at least guessing what we're here for, and where I'd fit within the prisoner-built society."

A long pointless speech, that should win the man over. He kept walking beside Roy. "You're pretty relaxed for a military man," he added.

A passage! Excellent...picturing the map in his mind, this had to be the right hallway. Either that or he was very, very lost. Thankfully he had been careful on setting out in the dark on his own, and finding his room from here would be relatively simple.

Ashton had taken the lead, approaching the first M-Block. He had temporarily forgotten where Claude's room was (he'd written such notes in his notebook before, and he hadn't been afforded such a luxury today; besides, their group usually met in his own hallway) so he automatically ran toward the place he knew the best - his own room. He couldn't help but stop, though, as soon as he passed through the doorway to the connecting hallway.

He turned to Claude. "I think, um, Axel and I are going to head to our room for now. You wouldn't mind bringing my sword back and meeting up in a bit? I mean, I .. I'm not very good with just one, so.."

The swordsman swallowed nervously. There were other things he'd wanted to talk to both Axel and Claude about, but only in private. It was so hard to get private time with someone these days!

[identity profile] full-score.livejournal.com 2007-12-03 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
Claude blinked, looking a little puzzled. It'd probably be best if they traveled together in one group, given the circumstances. But if Ashton trusted him enough to let him wander off on his own (and why wouldn't he?), Claude certainly wasn't going to act like he couldn't handle it by suggesting something different.

Now that he thought of it, it wasn't like he needed anyone to hold his hand or anything. Of course he could handle going to his room by himself. It'd give him a chance to look over his own supplies too, including his flashlight, which he was sure was nearing the end of its battery life.

"Sure thing," the blond said. "I'll be back in a jiffy. And I'll be sure to keep my eyes peeled for Leon while I'm out. Take care, okay? Both of you."

And with that, Claude sprinted down the hall and into the darkness.

"Thank you," he said sweetly as they passed through the doors. It wasn't too much further now that they were near the dorm rooms, he concluded. Perhaps they still had time for a little look around. Though he wasn't sure how adventurous he was feeling at the moment, he'd do what he'd promised.

Sousuke's directions had been lucid, but his head was starting to spin. He'd been running on adrenaline for a while now, and he was crashing. Although Jack's aid had sealed off his wound and replenished some of the blood, he had still lost quite a bit.

"Sergeant... Sagara Sousuke," He replied to Rukia's question, his tongue feeling heavy and cumbersome in his mouth. His name made it out okay, but his rank was a different story...

He lagged behind the group guiding Jack, his steps a bit unsteady. No! He shook his head to clear out the cobwebs. Not the time--he had to stay alert should something attack from the rear.

It was so hot in this horrible...'sweatshirt,' was what the nurse had called it. Whatever it was, Jean had never felt like she would melt to death in such a garment. Or was it because she was used to the lighter clothing of her homeworld?

Rukia sprinted down the dark hallway as fast as she could go. Fai had long legs; he could keep up. She was barely able to see anything at all without a flashlight, but she could feel where Renji was. That was all she needed.

Just before she reached the door out of the M-Block, Rukia staggered. She couldn't breathe. Renji's reiatsu... she couldn't find it. He'd been somewhere near the sun room, and it had disap-- NO!!

A low sound escaped her throat as she leaned on the door frame for support. Suddenly her head snapped back up. "Renji!" she gasped. His reiatsu was there again. Faint, but there... there... not in the sun room. To the north, in the other M-Block!

[identity profile] not-rly-fai.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Rukia was already out the door by the time he'd pushed himself out of his crouch in the corner, but it didn't take him long to catch up. He was thin and lanky and speed was something he was well-acquainted with. He was concerned about Rukia though, she'd taken off like a shot! What was wrong? It was difficult to keep up with all the different types of magic, but perhaps she'd sensed something he hadn't? Maybe she'd just remembered something? Maybe...

Almost there.

Hiei entered the block of patient rooms, Kurikara still on his back. It was getting hard to keep up his speed, his chest starting to burn, his heart pounding as he pushed his limits--which were pathetic compared to what he could normally do. It was only another reason to escape, to remove the limits set by this cursed prison.

Hiei couldn't care less what the humans he'd left behind thought. He'd got what he wanted, and that was satisfactory enough. He did smirk, however, to hear the familiar voice over his shoulder. "Good. We have a fight arranged. Don't think I've forgotten."

He nodded as he stepped into the corridor. "I'll get you there then you two can lie down while I check out this clinic and get the stuff I'll need to patch you both up," he said. Better for the two of them to rest and he could imagine that the clinic would be fairly crowded tonight.

Duo laughed a little at Omi and Yohji's banter over the alcohol, but the laughter kinda hurt so he didn't keep it up for too long. It was probably better to stay quiet anyway. Who knew what else could be out and about tonight.

Walking and following was starting to get really tiring, and though the screws had been removed, his feet were still stinging from the cuts. His back was even worse, though. Through all the times he'd been beaten up over the years, he couldn't ever remember losing this much blood.

At the mention of Yohji's plan, Duo scoffed in a teasing fashion. "What, we don't get a cute female nurse to tend to our wounds? Boy, do I feel shafted." At least cracking jokes helped to keep him focused.

Away from the people helping Fai and into the next hallway. Kenshin knew the way fairly well, but he was tired. It had been a very busy day and night, and it wasn't over yet. Still, he didn't let that slow him down. He walked to the hall with Homura's room in it. It was just around the corner...

Even though the hoped-for teammate had never arrived, Mark couldn't feel that the time spent in Roy's room was a total waste. Learning more about alchemy, the colonel, and the Cooking group in general could only be useful. True, the matches that Mustang had picked up, along with his comments about fire alchemy for offense, meant that they'd also gained fire power (so to speak) for any nurses, man-eating birds or other unnatural creations that might attack.

Which was one among many excellent reasons to continue to walk slightly behind Colonel Mustang as they continued their travels.

Even without Hughes (and the worry that brought), Roy was glad that he was actually getting somewhere this nightshift. It was rather surprising, considering how chaotic it had turned out to be. The calm that dayshift would bring would be a welcome change, but he'd rather it didn't come too soon.

Holding tight to the keys he had in his pocket, the alchemist exited the block with the other man in tow. They had run into each other by accident, but having someone with him was a relief. While Roy knew that he could handle a good share of the monsters on his own, he had come across things in the hospital that even four patients hadn't been able to take down.

With two of them, they would at least have a chance of incapacitating something for long enough to run away.

As they exited the block, Roy headed straight for the nearest stairwell.

Jack got himself out of the way and out into the hall. He couldn't actually walk a straight line, but he could still at least move under his own power. And, if he really lied to himself hard, he could almost believe that being on his feet helped clear his head.

Okita paused for a moment in the main hallway and checked himself. He had to be ready for whatever lay ahead - whether it was the rurouni or the Battousai. More than that, though, he was beginning to wonder just what they hoped to accomplish tonight. Walking down the hall, Okita counted thre hallways and then turned right, moving toward M13.
