Day 28: Bus 2

The group hadn't made it to the Twin Pines before the nurses started ushering them back to the buses. Sanji didn't believe the small sack dinner he was handed would make up for the meal they would have had at the restaurant, and aside from that he'd still wanted to check the place out. Now he had no way of comparing it to what they served at the asylum and he couldn't help but wonder if the staff had planned it that way.

Somehow in the large crowd of patients and nurses he lost track of his crewmates, something that seemed to be occurring just as often as Usopp warned it would. He had their room numbers now, though. He would find them tonight if not before.

His dinner was eaten quickly and he found it lacking, but he wouldn't complain. What he really needed was a cigarette. Bringing it up on the walk down Main Street earlier had only made him think about it more, and now he was just irritable. He tapped a light broken rhythm on the plastic pane of his window, staring out at the other patients as they were loaded into the buses also.

It almost seemed a waste. Had this other boy even tasted that cookie?! He gave a small, almost inaudible sigh. It seemed this other person could be as hungry, maybe even hungrier than he was! "Ah- um... I'm sorry. They don't give us very much here, do they?" It was more a statement than a question. There were few times in this place when he'd really been full and even then he'd still felt unsettled and uneasy.

Gluttony pouted in agreement with Allen. They gave him small amounts of human food which was not so nearly as tasty as the humans they fed it to. Food didn't scream or cry or be dead when it was alive. It had no tasty soul, it only had food. It made him sad.

"They don't let me eat what Lust says I can eat," he said plaintively. Twice he had the little tasty boy in his grasp, and twice the mean nurses pulled him away and gave him the shot that made him feel lightheaded and happy, but still hungry. He was reallyreally hungry now.

Lust? The way he used it made it sound like it was someone's name. But who would be mean enough to name their child Lust?! And for that matter, why would this Lust tell him to eat things that he oughtn't?

"Um," he filled the silence with his own uncertainty, "maybe Lust will take you to the kitchens at night then. I'm sure there'd be plenty there, right?" He turned his head to see the familiar bright red of Renji's hair. Maybe his luck wasn't so terrible. He could still talk to Renji and figure out what to do for the night. That and he was supposed to tell the man about Rhode.

"I um," he started as he moved to stand, "I'm sorry, but there's someone I really need to speak with." He nodded his head politely, "It... it was really nice meeting you. Maybe we can talk another time, ok?" He wasn't sure he wanted to run into the round man again, but maybe he was just having an off day. Who knew? He might be very pleasant. With a weak smile he gave one last nod to the other man and walked carefully down the aisle over to Renji.
