Day 28: Germaine Street

Rhode didn't want to have to let go of Allen, not ever. It could be forever before she was able to be with him again! But the nurses were persistent in moving her off the big yellow thing, as was Allen for getting away from her. Even outside of the building, people were just determined to keep her from being with him! It wasn't fair!

Once off the bus and shivering just slightly from the crisp fall air, Rhode was handed a small booklet of what the nurse called "coupons". It took some explaining, but Rhode was eventually able to understand that the thin pieces of paper in the book were supposed to be used like money here. She wasn't at all accustomed to buying things for herself; that was supposed to be the Earl's job. When Rhode expressed this problem, the nurse only gave her a sad smile and patter her in the direction of the buildings.

"Why don't you go find something fun to do? There's a toy store just around the corner there. Don't worry about being alone though, we're all here to keep an eye on you. If anything happens, just come get one of us," the nurse explained, nodding to the staff members that were set to parole the town for any problems their more unruly patents could cause.

So, they were all going to be watched even though they could roam about freely? Rhode took a look back towards the yellow things but was unable to pick out Allen from the mess of patients. In a few moments, she probably wouldn't be able to find him at all or for the rest of the day. Should she just resign herself to that for now and use the small bit of freedom to her advantage? Being with Allen was important, and a lot of fun but...

She glanced down at the coupons again, smiled up at the nurse as best she could, and gave a quick, "Okay!" before running off as suggested.

A small bit of freedom was bound to make her feel better. Maybe she could use it to remind herself of how she was supposed to handle Allen Walker, an exorcist. This town did have a similar air to that of the Rewinding Town, after all.

Stepping out of the bus, Bella lifted her head and took in a deep breath. It smelt so much better outside than in the horrible mental asylum. Then again, that was to be expected.

Moving away from the bus and into the shade of a building, Bella peered around. It looked like an okay town – nothing like Phoenix or Seattle of course, but it would still do. She could see people through the windows of the stores, all carrying on with their lives. Did they know that everyone had been taken from their homes?

Just then, something caught Bella’s eye.

And all at once, her jaw dropped and her face paled.

Why the hell were there Halloween decorations? Spinning around quickly and stared up at a nearby tree. The leaves were turning orange and red. Normally she would have found it to be pretty. Normally she would have found it to be normal.

But the last time she had looked at a calendar, it had been July.

So why the hell was it October?

Oh. My. God. Bella’s mind was practically screaming. What had happened.

If it was October, that meant it was past August. That meant she was married. That meant she was supposed to be a vampire, for Pete’s sake!

So why was she still human?

But then, an even worse revelation.

If it was October and she was still human …

That meant she was nineteen!

“Oh dear GOD.”

Edward followed her closely, examining the oranges and reds of the leaves, before turning his gaze to see Bella's face, looking horribly palid and grave.

The leaves? What in the-

The idea hit him as hard as it had his fiancé. Not fiancé. Wife. Autumn, not the annoying brightness of summer. The heat had dissipated into another cool, wind-swept season. There had been no wedding. The time. Where had it gone? It had seemed so long - and even his ancient mind couldn't keep up. He'd been so happy to know she was here with him, even though he still didn't know where here was and why exactly he was here. So worried about her wounds, and potential two-headed cannibals and being thrown into an insane asylum and having none of his vampiric abilities. Being found out. Being almost human.

Edward was already aware of her thought process as she breathed out her words, by her side in a split second with his arms already wrapped around her. "Don't freak out, Bella. It's nothing to get worked up over, love." He was whispering quickly in her ear, knowing how humans often grew upset at the topic of age, and this human in particular.

And if anything pained Edward, it was to see his wife upset over a deadline she had drawn across herself.

[identity profile] his-singer.livejournal.com 2007-11-01 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Was she having a panic attack? Bella was sure she was having a panic attack. That, or she was secretly dying and she hadn’t realized it yet. What in the world had happened?

“Edward,” Bella breathed out softly, her voice cracking as her hands clung onto him in a desperate need. “What the hell happened? Why is it October? How long have we been asleep for?!” She was growing frantic, that much was obvious. Luckily, Bella knew that if she were to have a panic attack in public, not only would she probably be noticed, but she would probably be sent back on the buses.

That was something she didn’t want.

Hiding her face in Edward’s shoulder, Bella took in a deep breath, trying to control herself. She knew if she started to cry, Edward would just become frantic and then depressed, and then she would become angry at his frantic depression, and the whole day would just end horribly.

With his sweet scent now calming her system down, Bella was finally able to look up at Edward with sad eyes. “This can’t be right. Something must be wrong. It’s just like that crazy movie about time travel we saw. Maybe we were brought to the future and didn’t even know it. I mean, how could we not even remember our w- … w- … our wedding?!”

There, she said it. She practically slammed her head back down on his shoulder when she said the word wedding, yet said nothing about it. Instead she simply shook her head and sighed once again, her hands starting to shake. “I’d never forget something like that.”

[identity profile] her-lion.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
The moment was akin to the mental crashes over Jacob, but there was little solitude, and no bed to hold her on. This was the best he could do.

He smoothered her hair with one hand, the other wrapped around her. It was the best way of calming her he knew. "I don't know," he answered her question, and wished he did know. Two or three months, at the most. How much could have possibly happened in those days? "I don't know."

Edward sighed, listening to her calm her own heart. It was as if the finality of the situation had been forgotten until this moment, when the time, and place, and futility all came crashing down at once. He wasn't sure how to respond - he could not explain it, either.

"It's nothing that... can't be fixed," he tried, hearing the way her voice broke on the word wedding.

Except that they had been husband and wife for weeks already.

Except that she should have been a vampire for weeks already.

[identity profile] his-singer.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Nothing that couldn’t be fixed. The words rang over and over in her head, and she couldn’t help but feel a blush creep up over her cheeks.

Perhaps it was because a sudden realization had struck her at the mention of the wedding. Yes, she was supposed to be a vampire. Yes, they were supposed to be married. All of these things were supposed to have happened by now … but also there was something else.

Her one, lone request.

The blush deepened on her cheeks, and she shook her head in an attempt to drive it away. Well, now she was just being retarded. Now was not the time to think of that.

Lifting her head to look up at Edward’s face, Bella sighed, her eyes darting away from his own moments later. “I … guess …” she muttered under her breath, a soft sigh escaping her lips. It wouldn’t do her very well to have a panic attack especially in a place like this. They were still being watched like they were criminals! If she were to show any sign of stress, who knew what one of the nurses would do to her. She didn’t have to see the needles to know that they were carrying some kind of sedative around with them. It was one lesson she had learned after her many stays in the hospital.

Bella shook her head once again and sucked in a deep breath. “Let’s try to find somewhere private or something so I can properly freak out without the chance of a nurse stabbing me full of some unknown fluid, please.”

[identity profile] her-lion.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
He couldn't help but smile at the blush. He hadn't precisely meant that, but it was included, as well.

Edward looked up from Bella's face, eyes darting around the rather dilapidated park. Even here, there was a multitude of nurses running around. As if it wasn't bad enough at Landel's... but it shouldn't be surprising, either way. Who would let a herd of mentally-ill patients on thier own in a town?

Not that many seemed to be, but his thoughts digressed. He turned back to his wife, face grave. "It seems unlikely we'll get any sort of seclusion here," he said, voice matter-of-fact, though he was very disappointed. "Perhaps we should just wander? As long as I can circumlocute any crowds and the fullest sunlight, I should be fine."

Maybe. But he would just be sure to be extra careful. Perhaps a restaurant or something could be found - they had been given the coupons, after all.

Damn, she should have seen that coming. Bella frowned when he said it was unlikely that the two of them would be able to be alone together, but … she knew it was coming. “Well, if I get sedated, promise not to laugh at me, okay?”

Sighing, the teenager untangled herself from her … husband’s grasp and shuddered, wrapping her arms around herself as she turned and glared at a nearby tree. Damn wonky time. Damn still being a human. Damn being married! … Well, she couldn’t help but feel at least a little happy at the thought of being married to – NO! Bella shook her head and took a few steps away from Edward as she tried to clear her head. Now was not the time to be thinking happy thoughts. No, it was time to have a proper freak out.

“There has to be somewhere … maybe a bookstore or something.” Her coupon book was completely forgotten at that time, but that was okay. She was up for wandering, truthfully. It would help her get her mind off of things. Maybe.

And if all else failed, she knew she would be able to talk alone with Edward tonight after returning to the institute. She had never heard of a monster busting into a room, so maybe they would be fine.

"If you do get sedated, I'm sure I'll be right behind." He laughed, watching her break away from his grasp.

He didn't know it, but Edward would've been glad he couldn't read her mind right now. He was used to the reluctance - bordering disgust, really - at the marriage, but a "proper" freak out? That would deserve a shake of the head. Humans.

"Nothing left than to try, then. If worse comes to worse, we have tonight?" He made it a question, eyebrows raised in curiousity. "Unless you've made plans with another boy, of course."
