Day 28: Bus 2

Momo tugged on the collar of the light blue sweater she was wearing as she followed her nurse to wherever these buses were, winding her hair up into its customary bun as she went. It was an odd feeling, knowing she was about to go outside of the institute's borders. Maybe the Head Doctor was about to make an error and the shinigami, as well as everyone else, would no longer be limited and they could finish what they started several nights back.

That was probably too much to hope for. She was feeling better this morning, even with the blood moon, and was mildly looking forward to the bus ride. Captain Jack said he was going to be here this morning and even if it wasn't customary breakfast in the cafeteria, she's be satisfied with him sitting next to her on the bus.

The nurse handed her a muffin, some napkins, and a small box with a straw. She stared at this box for a moment before shaking it. From the sound it contained liquid. How odd... Momo wasn't sure why they would but liquid inside a small paper box - it didn't make any sense to her and she wasn't sure how one was supposed to get it out of the box.

Clambering onto an empty bus, Momo chose to sit in the very back near the emergency exit. Maybe she could force her way out of it as they were moving and escape the limiter enough to come back and level the institute, freeing everyone. Or maybe she just wanted to be able to see everyone that was on the same bus as her. Wishful thinking versus reality.

"Auauu..." Nothing, Hanyuu found, looked familiar outside. Granted, they were still sitting outside the building, but it was still disheartening. It was possible she'd be able to recognize something once they actually started moving, but... Hanyuu couldn't help but feel that wasn't probable.

She was still staring out the window, her arm pressed against the glass while her chin rested on her arm, when someone greeted her. Had the voice not been a familiar one, Hanyuu likely would've jumped in surprise. Although the familiarity helped ease the anxiety that still rose when someone approached her.

Despite recognizing the voice, the girl turned and smiled once she was able to see Rena. Meeting during the day was much preferable to meeting at night.

"Of course," Hanyuu replied, "It's nice to see you again."

"Yes," Rena returned, "you, too." It was good to see Hanyuu smiling, considering smiles meant hope more than anything else. And it was probably best to keep up as much hope as possible.

She slid into the seat besides the younger girl, positioning the paper bag on her lap. It likely contained her breakfast, but Rena had yet to develop an appetite. There were bigger matters to see to, after all. "How are you this morning?" asked the girl, one hand inching toward the sleeves of the other. Those "ants" were getting feisty.

"I'm okay," Hanyuu replied. As fine as someone could be, all things considered. "How are you, Rena?"

Although, once she actually thought about it, there was something peculiar that had happened. Hanyuu had first attributed it to having fallen asleep, but that seemed rather unlikely. If that had been the case, how had she gotten back to her room? She couldn't recall telling anyone where her room was-- not that she could, since she wasn't sure where it was exactly anyway. Then there was the fact her wounds had been properly dressed and cared for at some point.

"Uh, actually, there was something I was wondering about... Do you know how I got back to my room last night?"

"I'm glad to hear that." On cue, the older girl offered her most optimistic smile. "Rena is doing fine as well."

When Hanyuu asked about last night, however, a somber expression immediately creased her face. Sora had explained the logistics of that particular quirk during her first night: at dawn, patients simply woke in their own rooms, wounds treated and minds holding no knowledge of ever sleeping. She had even experienced firsthand three times since her arrival. Still, there were so many possibilities with the how and the why, Rena wasn't certain if she could find the proper words.

"Rena honestly doesn't know," she finally admitted to Hanyuu. "It happens to everyone when morning comes; people wake up in their beds not knowing how they got there. Not to mention our injuries are always treated." As if confirming the statement, the girl glanced at the single band-aid across her knuckles. "Some have said they knock us out somehow, but I don't know... There's just so many patients to keep track of."

She sighed, more in thought than in frustration. "Strange, isn't it?"

So... no one could recall how they were returned to their rooms? And no one knew who it was that tended to injuries, either? That was... unnerving, and rather confusing. If this place was responsible for the injuries in the first place, and if they were the ones trapping everyone there, why would they bother treating wounds and the like?

"Yes, it is strange," Hanyuu agreed with a slow nod. "It was a little scary too, but thank you for telling me." She didn't really see how they'd be able to knock everyone out, either. Granted, she had only seen a few hallways and rooms the previous day and night. But there had been a lot of people in the cafeteria during lunch the previous day. Then there were certainly more rooms and hallways further on, and... and...

"Auauau..." It didn't make any sense at all.

Hanyuu leaned sideways slightly, enough to rest her head against the window. She had only been that way for a short time when the engines started, causing the girl to jump slightly. She was quick to recover, however, and she once again looked outside.

"Ah, we're moving!"
