Nightshift 27: 2nd Floor Hallway near Medical Reference Library and Railed Area

[from here]

Once they were safely at the top of the stairs, Ritsuka flicked on his flashlight and swept the area. It was probably unwise to announce their position, but he needed to know where he was. For all the times Ritsuka had been up here, he had never really gotten very far and his memory was fuzzy. Somewhere to his right was the pharmacy, near the railing, where he needed to stop for supplies for Tamaki.

Whether he should stop there first or after their explorations, however, was the problem. Turning to the right, he started forward and tried not to show any fear. He wanted to get things done tonight, even if it meant facing the worst that Landel's had to offer. He just hoped he wouldn't have to do that just yet.

Leon hadn't even thought to protest the removal. It was hard to think at all, really, as he was primarily focused on just trying to get the air in and out of his lungs. Mostly in. He hardly even noticed he was being dragged away from his friends until he was seated against the wall.

He just sat for a couple minutes, coughing and clutching at his chest until some semblance of normal breathing had returned. The breaths were heavy and gasping, but they were doing their job. A hand remained at his chest as he got his surroundings. His book was still clutched tightly in the other one, as though this was the only thing he'd had the strength to do as he'd been led away.

His heavy-lidded eyes fell on Naminé finally, and he stared simply because she was still someone unfamiliar. Where had everyone else gone? Why was he here now? Wasn't he supposed to be rescuing Ashton?

Leon opened his mouth to ask as much, but could form no words. Attempts to speak only caused him to cough more, and the hand that had been at his chest went to rub on his neck. If the weariness hadn't been enough to keep him from casting another spell anytime soon, this would be.

He was not alright. He didn't even need to say anything, the poor boy was coughing and almost choking from the effort to form words, she thought. But there really was nothing Naminé can do, but pat his shoulder reassuringly and wait for the coughing spell to go away.

Leon did seem disoriented. He probably was not listening to her when she said she had to take them out of a danger zone. But she was no longer worried about Ashton; Ashton had been the one who carried Axel out of danger, so surely Axel would do the same for him.

"Don't worry, Ashton is fine. Axel reached him. I'm sure the others will be out with him soon," She told Leon again, trying to sound soothing. Yet she still cast apprehensive looks to the door.

How soon was soon...?

Ashton was all right? That was good, then. That meant they'd been successful. He could only hope he'd been of some help in the process. He let himself slump a bit more, just continuing to focus on breathing.

He remembered these effects from the previous night, only they hadn't been nearly as strong. He'd been able to speak afterwards, and stand even though he was a little shaky. That spell had failed, though. He supposed this could be the punishment for actually managing to pull one off.

But he had managed a spell. That in itself was something, given the limitations of this place. It didn't look like he'd be able to cast more than one, or one stronger than the one he'd just cast, but it was an accomplishment and Leon smiled despite how horrible he felt.

"S'..all righ'," he got out finally. "'ll b'fine."

After scooping up his chakram from the floor Axel had taken his place behind Dias to keep watch at the back of their group just in case anything decided to jump out at them. Fortunately, the trip went by a lot smoother than he expected, and they made it out of the hallway in practically no time. The redhead spotted that familiar blond head almost instantly, and he moved away from his post and made his way over to the girl and the other kid near the wall.

"Is something wrong?" From the looks of it neither of them appeared to be harmed in any way. He made sure to squint, glancing at the two for a little longer before sighing loudly. Nope, there wasn't anything physical, and he'd be lying if he said he wasn't relieved to see that Naminé was smart enough to high-tail it out of there as soon as possible.

"Looks like we did it." Axel said to Naminé, motioning over at Dias and Ashton with a pair of jazz hands. Though looking at their group again it looked to be a little larger than he would've liked. And so, standing straight, he glanced down the hallway curiously.

"Maybe a few of us should try to find some bandages and we can all meet up in M12." He suggested.

Dias wasn't paying any particular attention to Claude's or anyone else's reactions to his carrying Ashton like a new bride; he'd gone into a frame of mind that was something like tunnel vision, in that he was no longer concerned with or even paying attention to anything except accomplishing his goal - getting Ashton somewhere safe. (Preferably his room.) It was the sort of mindset he went into during jobs as a mercenary.

He did note, however, Ashton's fingers toying idly with strands of his hair. He didn't complain; he wouldn't have had any particular objections in any case, and anything that his friend could focus on that would at least distract him from the ordeal he'd gone through was a good thing.

"Painkillers," Dias added in response to Axel's suggestion. "If anyone can find some." He shifted, more due to his impatience than because Ashton's weight was the least bit cumbersome; he wanted to get Ashton back to his room as soon as possible. He wasn't going to let anything else happen to him, certainly not tonight.

"Leon.. Naminé? Hi, guys.. good to see you. Thank you," Ashton said weakly. He had painfully tilted his head away from Dias to see the younger members of the rescue group. Naminé... He hadn't seen her in quite a while, it seemed, even though it really had not been overlong. Was it.. when they rescued Axel? Maybe it was. He'd .. kind of missed her, to be honest. She was something clean and pure, and Ashton had always found himself drawn to those kinds of girls.

And Leon.. something was wrong with him. Such a sturdy kid didn't usually slump that much, Ashton didn't think. Something was wrong.. something was wrong with all of them tonight, save possibly Axel, who was the decidedly cheerful one in the group. They probably needed that, come to think of it. Claude and Dias both had the tendency to brood if given something to brood over.

He tilted his head back, it being too physically painful to look back at them anymore. He brought his blood-soaked head back to Dias', looking up at him as he spoke. "I .. that'd be nice. We have some ass-pee-rin back in my room, but I don't know if it's .. a good idea to take after something like this." That was from what he'd remembered of Axel the night of his surgery. Axel knew.. quite a bit about this kind of thing.

"I don't want anybody to be held up too much on my account, though." Ashton's voice was cracking - he'd screamed too much. Talking was painful. Everything was painful.

But somehow, being carried like this made it feel a little better.

Claude was glad to see Naminé and Leon were all right, though he knew that whatever the blue-haired boy had done in the hallway had drained him of a lot of his energy. It was worrisome, to say the least, but he seemed to be standing, which was a good thing. "You did great back there, keeping your cool like that," he told both of them after a brief moment. "I'm glad you two are all right."

He came very close to saying, "It's aspirin," when he heard Ashton's mispronunciation, but now wasn't the time for anything like that. It sounded like Ashton was hurting, and he suddenly wondered if these sick bastards had even given him any drugs to manage the pain in the first place. Honestly, he wouldn't put it past them, and the thought made him give a hard frown.

"You can start talking like that once you're actually safe," the blond, glancing over at his best friend. It was just like him to try to get people to stop fretting over him, but surely he knew they wouldn't just abandon him!

Then he turned towards Axel with a nod. "Yeah, I think it might be best to split up like you said. That way we can be knocking out two birds with one stone, and we reduce Ashton's chances of getting hurt even more."

It seemed to take an eternity, but the doors finally opened and everyone came out - Axel first (Naminé's grin was extremely large), and then Dias and Ashton, followed by Claude.

Ashton looked... well, terrible. But they got him out, at the very least. Immediately, her thoughts shifted to her room. She had grabbed quite a lot of medicine and supplies, so there was no need for them to raid the Pharmacy. Naminé had pretty much taken everything she could these past two nights.

"I can go to my room. I found where they were keeping the medicine a few nights ago and I also have bandages and other things. Please, let me take care of it!" Naminé told them. That way, no one would have to waste time actually finding any of those things. The problem was, though...

"But if anyone knows anything about the kind of medicine that they have here, it'd be nice if that person could come with me. I don't know how strong any of it is, or even what it's used for..." The names were so unfamiliar, not to mention she only had about one or two bottles of each type of medicine she could find, so she didn't want to waste any of it.

At least she knew that those nights spent stocking up were going to be useful.

Leaning against the wall, Leon straightened up a bit when the others came into view. It was embarrassing, really, appearing so weak after just one spell. He was a master spellcaster! He summoned demons from the beyond and wiped out hordes of enemies with a single spell! He was better than this.

His own issues were put aside for the most part when he caught a good look at Ashton, however. It had been misleading when Naminé had told him that he was all right. He quite obviously wasn't "all right" and this made him want to yell at the girl for giving him the wrong information. That wouldn't be right, though. She couldn't have known. She just wanted to keep him from worrying, which was admirable. At the very least, Ashton was alive. That was something to be thankful for.

"Ash--" his greeting was broken off by a series of light coughs, after which he cleared his throat and tried again, voice scratchy. "Ashton. Thank goodness they got you out." He didn't follow up with are you okay? because obviously he wasn't. His friend didn't need to be forced into going over anything, at least not again if he already had.

When he spoke again, his words were occasionally punctuated by short coughs. "I don't... I don't think I'd be... good for carrying anything. 'M sorry." And it really sucked to have to admit this, too. He wanted to be useful. He wanted to do something. But all in all he'd managed very little. It was rather disheartening, to say the least.

"If you've lost too much blood then aspirins will just make it worse." Axel quipped in after Ashton's addition to their conversation. He'd seen a good bit of blood out of his roommate's body, and since the point of entry came from the head it wasn't exactly something he'd want to risk. So when Naminé came to the rescue and informed them of her little stash the redhead was quick to grin and ruffle her hair for a job well done.

"Excellent! I'll go along with Naminé then and we'll figure out what we can use without making his condition any worse." It was the last thing Ashton needed after all. It felt like a good bit of the night had already passed, which was just peachy with him, but they weren't out of the woods just yet. Waiting for a minute so that the blond could pick up her flashlights from the ground, the redhead coaxed the girl to follow him down the hall and to the nearest stairway.

Well, it sounded as though Ashton wasn't going to be able to take any painkillers - or at least not this aspeerin (somehow Dias suspected the way Ashton drew the word out wasn't entirely correct) stuff. He didn't know why it'd hurt Ashton to take it, but he was hardly going to experiment with unknown drugs on his friend against the advice of people who knew better than he what it did.

He shot a concerned glance at Leon; he wasn't sure what had happened to the boy, although it might've had something to do with the spell that had swept past him as he'd been facing off against that creature. Still...there didn't seem to be anything obviously wrong with him...maybe it was just exhaustion.

In any case, Axel and the girl had left, which left the four of them. "Let's go." He shifted his grip on Ashton slightly.
