Nightshift 26: First Floor Stairwell Beside Waiting Room 1

[from here]

Aidou paused for the second time that night, listening half-heartedly to the radio announcement. The volume was painfully low, so that it didn't attract any unwanted attention. None of it interested him, even as the riddles came easily enough. None of it was useful to him. So far nothing the monkey on the radio had offered had caught his eye, and he doubted that would change.

Stepping into the stairwell, he glanced to the floor. He was willing to bet the other three stairwells on this floor were the same - no stairs leading to the basement, and no stairs leading past the second floor.

So where were the access points? It was a good question.

As much as it bugged her to see the emperor so captivated by that other girl, Anise found herself breathing a silent sigh of relief at his response. It looked like Cyrille wasn't such an airhead after all--she even knew how to use those looks of hers. In a funny way, Anise gained a little respect for her. As a worthy love rival, anyway.

But then the emperor had to run ahead! Anise opened her mouth to shout after him, but quickly stopped herself before calling his title. Ack. Was she going to have to watch her mouth the whole time she was around Cyrille?

It did sound like the fight was over, but who was to say that the winner wasn't some hungry monster, ready to tear apart the next idiot to cross its path? "W-wait for me!" Anise scurried up the stairs after the emperor, determined to make sure he wouldn't be that idiot.

Cyrille was not one to be left behind, she quickly followed behind Anise. She cursed for a moment that she wasn't a very fast runner, she was being left behind by a mere child! Oh, this was bad. Peony would be the type to run ahead, wouldn't he? He reminded her of Toma at that moment, trying to act brave around her. It was useless if he were to get injured in the process!

Stupid, stupid!

As they walked up the stairs, Cyrille took quick glances at the map. They were so far so good... not they just had to head towards the nurse's station on the right, and then forward. It would be easy... she hoped.

"This way," she politely pointed as they reached the top of the steps.

Fortunately for the impulsive emperor, the overgrown cat was indeed good and dead by the time they arrived at the top of the stairs. Peony turned to the girls behind him, a winning smile on his face. "See, there was nothing to worry about." Though what would he have done if there had been something to worry about?

He'd have smacked it in the head, that's what.

He twirled the mop about in his hand, opening the stairs door long enough to stick one end of the wooden mop in the crack and pull it open.

"After you," he said cheerfully, ushering the two girls through, Anise first.
