Nightshift 26: Hallway Outside M1 - M40 Blocks
This corridor looked almost the same. Still quiet, though now he noticed more people about. At least that meant he hadn't run into any monsters. He ran along the hall until he saw the door that had caused him and Dr. Birkin so much trouble. From the day now, he knew that at the end of this hall was almost a lobby with the hall to the Sun Room and Cafeteria to the left. He didn't want to go there, so this was the end of the blocks. Right? No bathroom. He must have missed something.
Armand backtracked until he found another door that opened easily.

It figured. Even if he'd solved half of his nicotine problem (temporarily) with the newly acquired box of cigarettes, they were ultimately useless without something to light them with.
It was almost worse having the cigarettes right in his pocket and knowing he couldn't smoke them yet, than not having them at all.
"I'm dying for a smoke, that's why," Sanzo replied. He changed the subject: talking about it anymore was just reminding him just how badly he wanted one. "What're you doing out here?"

He could have pressed the point, but chose instead to go along with the change. "As it happens, I was waiting for you. I thought you might enjoy company, and I found myself unoccupied."
Which, of course, nicely skirted around his actual reasoning. This place was always dangerous after dark, but the feeling tonight... Well, Hakkai wouldn't likely admit it was making him nervous, but it had caused him to seek out Sanzo, in any case.

Sanzo raised an eyebrow. "When have you ever known me to enjoy company?"
The monk very much doubted he didn't have things he could be doing this night. Hakkai was resourceful, and far more efficent than the roach or monkey. He'd likely have started looking for weapons or information, not dicking around like Goku.
They could both read between the lines here, and Sanzo didn't like that Hakkai felt some kind of need to follow along and maybe "coincidentally" act as bodyguard if something came up. Sanzo could take care of himself, and the chances of getting mauled in the distance from his cell to Goku's were pretty slim.

He could find something to do on his own most likely, but after a year of following Sanzo, it was really the most natural course to take. Sanzo could, of course, always attempt to tell him to leave.

But Hakkai knew that well enough.
"Do whatever you want," Not quite a 'no' but also not really a 'yes'. "I'm going to get the monkey before he wanders off and does something stupid."
