Nightshift 26: F-Block Hallway

[From here.]

Shining the flashlight around the corner, Rukia didn't see any other patients around, which was fine with her at the moment. She wanted to get to Colonel Mustang quickly, and hopefully Renji wouldn't take too long to meet her...

Jogging along quietly, she continued on.

As she stepped into the second, larger hallway, Ami nervously noticed that she seemed to be one of the only people wandering around. Maybe I should have just stayed in my room? Panic started to build up but she forced it down. Don't be silly! she scolded herself mentally. You're a sailor senshi and you've faced a lot worse than dark, empty corridors. Steeling herself once more, Ami waited close to the hallway she had just stepped out from for Usagi to appear. Not wanting to draw attention to herself, she kept the flashlight off, and listened.

[Waiting for Usagi]

Usagi entered the hallway and looked around. There were only a few other people moving around, so it only took a second for her eyes to adjust and settle on Ami. After two nights without her friends it was weird to see one standing in the dark hallway, but that didn't mean she wasn't glad for it.

"Ami!" Usagi called out as quietly as she could as she jogged over to her friend, this time without falling on her face. Ami had said they would be meeting up with other people, but Usagi wished they had more time to talk alone.

[identity profile] icy-pole.livejournal.com 2007-08-24 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Ami kept a sharp eye out as a couple of people trickled past before she heard a familiar voice calling her name. Two blonde meatballs were coming towards her out of the dark, and Ami had to smile. Typical Usagi, running late.

"Usagi!" Ami greeted her best friend, even more glad that the one person she was in here with was Usagi. "I'm glad we have a chance to talk before we meet up with everyone else," she whispered, so as not to be overheard. "Please tell me you have your crystal to change?" Ami had the horrible feeling she knew what Usagi was going to say.

[identity profile] moon-brained.livejournal.com 2007-08-24 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't..." Usagi replied reluctantly, her shoulders drooping. Ami was probably counting on her to still have some of her power, but she was going to be let down.

"I mean, I don't have it physically... but I don't think the doctors have it either. I met someone else who said he shouldn't be able to survive without his power. I would be dead or at least unconscious by now... so maybe it's back inside me?" That made the most sense, and a power block wasn't nearly as bad as someone else having the crystal.

[identity profile] icy-pole.livejournal.com 2007-08-24 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Ami heard Usagi's feelings of disappointment in her voice and quickly sought to reassure her, knowing how seriously she took her role as the leader of the senshi. "It sounds like everyone's powers or weapons have been taken," Ami said comfortingly. "So we'll just have to make do without being able to transform. I know you asked me before if everything was...normal...back home. We didn't get a chance to talk about it before, but by any chance do you remember Queen Nehelenia?"

This was the big question. Was this Usagi the best friend Ami knew, or a stranger from a different world?

[identity profile] moon-brained.livejournal.com 2007-08-24 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"Eh? Of course I do..."

Usagi remembered Ami asking that question during lunch but the shift had ended before they could continue the conversation. "We defeated her and the rest of the Dead Moon the day before I was brought here. Did something go wrong?" The Dead Moon illusions were hard to break through, but Usagi was sure that they were gone for good.

But what if they weren't? It was a slim chance, but Usagi had been gone for three days now and without the crystal's power protecting Earth who knows what could have gone wrong? With that thought in mind she braced herself for whatever Ami would say next.

[identity profile] icy-pole.livejournal.com 2007-08-24 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh dear. Not good. Obviously this Usagi had been taken from a different time than Ami, or she was from a different dimension. Ami knew she was treading on dangerous ground now. Anything she said could force the threads of time to shift and change, possibly for the worst. She sighed and rubbed her temples.

"Usagi, I don't think we were taken from the same time period," Ami broke the news gently. This was going to be hard to explain. "I can't really tell you too much about what is happening in my timeline because I'm afraid that it could drastically change the future." Ami closed her eyes, deep in thought. "All I can say is that I'm beyond the time period that you are from...but not by much." That was about as much as Ami could reveal without completely ruining the future.

[identity profile] moon-brained.livejournal.com 2007-08-24 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"... what?!" Finding out there was another world where some floozy was giving out her secret identity for a TV show was bad enough! The distant future was one thing... now these jerks at Landel's were taking her friends from closer timelines just to confuse her?!

"Are you sure you can't tell me?" She asked, clutching her flashlight. The idea that something very bad could be happening in her immediate future was frightening. "Pluto and Neo-Queen Serenity broke those rules about time and nothing bad happened!"

[identity profile] icy-pole.livejournal.com 2007-08-24 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Ami knew that any information she could give Usagi regarding the new fight with Nehelenia could be vital, but was just as afraid of corrupting the time/space continuum. "I'm so sorry Usagi. I really want to tell you what's happening, but I really can't." Ami gnawed at her bottom lip in worry. She didn't want this version of Usagi to worry about what was happening to her future self.

She tried to comfort her best friend. "Unfortunately Pluto and Neo-Queen Serenity had more of an idea of what would happen if they did break the rules," she said, sorrowfully. "But all I can say Usagi, is that in the time I am from, you are even more powerful than ever, and I have no doubt that your future self is strong enough to overcome the toughest of obstacles." Ami smiled encouragingly. "You just have to believe in yourself."

If Axel didn't know better he'd have to say that this block smelt more pleasant than the others, but maybe it was just him. Either way, he knew he was getting closer to his destination. The redhead could only hope that Sora didn't pull something stupid and sweep Kairi up without him knowing. If that were the case, then he'd have to make sure to pick the brunet up and drop him off the railing he'd seen from the Sun Room.

Anise could see the lights of other flashlights. Were they all other patients? She wondered if the nurses and staff came out at night, too. All the more reason to hurry, right? Waving her own flashlight around playfully, she continued left.

By then they reached the doorway to the next hallway, and Jade found himself pushing through and holding the door open for Anise to enter as well.

"Well, yes." Jade chuckled in response, but his grin disappeared into something calmer as he took the girl's words into consideration. So it was just as he expected, so it wasn't something he should've prided himself in. In fact, his reaction was quite the opposite, rubbing his thumb against the bottom of his chin while he contemplated.

"You aren't the only one suffering from this." He finally answered. "Luke isn't that much farther than you, his memory only stretches as far as the Tower of Rem."

[Following from here!]

That's right--Asch had said something like that, too. "So our memories are messed up?" Then between her duel and now were a year's worth of memories she had completely forgotten? It was an uncomfortable thought, but it looked like it was the truth; she was going to have to get used to it. The colonel wasn't there to listen to her worries or console her, after all.

Come to think of it, what was the colonel there for? She had followed him back to the F Block hall, but to her knowledge, there wasn't much there besides the women's bedrooms. What kind of reason could he have to go there? Might as well ask.

"Um, where are we going? This is the way to the women's rooms, right?" She gasped, dramatically. "Ah! Don't tell me you have a date for tonight!" Even the colonel made a good subject for teasing sometimes.

...Unless it really was true.

[identity profile] visualize.livejournal.com 2007-08-24 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"It could be that, but it could possibly be something else." Jade chose to keep ambiguous on the whole matter, as it was the only thing to do until he was certain of the answer. After all, it wouldn't do them any good if he were wrong, though trial and error was always a possibility if he had any desire to be sloppy. Which he didn't.

Anise's joke tore him from his thoughts, his smile morphing into something enigmatic.

"Now why would I go out with another woman when I already have a charming young lady with me?" It was true in some cases. The teen certainly wouldn't slow him down while he searched the halls, but it was obvious to see that she didn't have Tokunaga in her possession.

"If you must know, I plan to meet with his Majesty, Peony the IXth."

[personal profile] gald_digger 2007-08-24 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, Colonel!" Anise giggled. He was pretty good at laying on the flattery when he tried! And flattery was something Anise was always pleased to hear.

"But why would the emperor be..." she stopped as she thought about it herself. No way... was Emperor Peony the one who had a date for the night!? Anise gave the colonel a pleading look, as though she were begging him to say it wasn't so.

[identity profile] visualize.livejournal.com 2007-08-24 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"Now now, don't give me that look." It was easy to read Anise's thoughts, and Jade found himself laughing despite her desperation.

"I expect you to be on your best behavior." He knew all too well what she was capable of and he wasn't certain of the losses Anise faced when it came to her fonic abilities. "I've been informed that she's a Seventh Fonist, and so that would make her a valuable asset when neither Tear or Natalia are around."

Jade's smile widened.

"But I must admit, it'd be a world of fun if we kidnapped her before his Majesty arrived."

Damn it. So it was true. Here Anise would have done anything for a date with the emperor, and some girl she never heard of came along...

But the colonel was right. A Seventh Fonist would be a great help. They would have to meet this girl... It would be fine. She'd just have to try and allow as little alone time for her and the emperor as possible! Anise smiled back at him, abruptly reverting to her bright and cheerful demeanor--although there was no hiding the mischief on her mind from the colonel. "You know her room number? I'd like to meet her."

"We'll just have to see what's available." Axel responded to Kairi's question, opening door to the next Hallway for her before exiting himself. He couldn't help but sigh lightly at her next one, but it wasn't like he could blame her. They didn't have as many people this time, and he was actually concerned for Kairi's well being in a way, so there wasn't any chance for a diversion.

"When I say to, you run." It was a simple enough request, but the look on his face would've told her that he was completely serious.

Excel snuck down the hall and turned out her flashlight the moment she saw people. She mustn't be seen, she decided. Now was not the time for recruits. It was time to be sneaky and search out information. "Hail IlPalazzo," she declared softly as she slunk down the hall

Run? Oh god, Kairi cursed herself for gorging on her meals. It didn’t help that the air was seemingly getting heavier with every step she took. Yet she simply nodded to Axel, giving him a thumbs up to show him that she understood what he was saying. He wanted her to run? She would run … all the while ignoring the shooting flames and the ache in her heart. Other than that, she was great. Great great great.

“You think you can run for longer than a few seconds?” and she smiled up to him sweetly.
