Day 25: Sun Room (Fourth Shift)

The concept of gardening in the greenhouse was not one that Hitsugaya was particularly fond of. It was likely exceptionally warm inside, whereas the young captain had a preference for cold climates. He also needed to make himself available for anyone who happened to want to speak with him. The sun room overall seemed the best choice.

As a warm and cheerful nurse led him into the sunroom, he glanced around. At the moment he was the first one there, which was good, as it meant he could keep an eye out for one of the many individuals who had expressed curiosity about the 'arts and crafts' division. It also meant he could watch out for Omi or this Hellsing woman. He excused himself from the nurse and proceeded to a seat that gave him a good view of the entrance. If not for the fact that he was being held here against his will, he might have felt happy. Real rice. He hadn't had time to eat as much as he had hoped, what with his meeting with Mustang, but he still ate a lot more than he'd had the opportunity previously. Even Momo seemed to be acting more like normal.

As unpleasant as the day had begun, it was turning out to be a good day.

[From same place as Miku]

Byakko had taken a moment to stretch and preen his hair while Miku went to post on the bulletin. He just happened to glance over for a second and saw the colour drain from her face, the girl's eyes widening in what looked like shock.

Within a second he was on his feet, dashing over to her side. He wasn't quite fast enough to stop her from collapsing, but managed to catch her shoulders and stop her head connecting with the floor. He knelt down, cradling her head in his lap while he looked around frantically for someone to help. He wasn't even sure if he could trust the nurses not to make things worse.

He stroked Miku's hair gently, checking her pulse and feeling her clammy forehead. Not good. What had happened? She'd just been looking at the bulletin!

He closed his eyes, reaching out and calling the wind to himself. It took more effort than it should have, but eventually he managed to create a small cool breeze to himself, letting it brush over Miku's face.

She wasn't sure how long she was out,- seconds? A few, bone-shaking minutes? - before she came to, a cool breeze dancing on her face, someone's lap beneath her head.

Had she fallen? Why had she fallen? Oh, right. Renji... and that doctor. Miku's stomach roiled dangerously and she felt the acids surging to her mouth. "Nnhh!"

It was barely enough time to move her weak, shaking body and deposit that tiny bit of lunch she'd taken, a little bit of rice, a chunk of what might have been fortune cookie, a few beef bits, all mixed in bitter yellow bile on the floor. She coughed.

"S-sorry... sorry... sorry..." she apologized between hacks. He'd been so nice and now... she'd just vomited on him!

It wasn't long before a nurse made her way to the sick patient, calling out to another one of her co-workers to grab some napkins and a trash bucket to clean up the mess. She gently laid down on the other side of Alice Rhodes, careful not to kneel in the vomit and make an even bigger mess.

"Ms. Rhodes? Ms. Rhodes? Are you alright? Can you focus your eyes? Look at me, dear," The nurse gently called, trying to keep Alice awake long enough to move her. The poor dear! Perhaps her stomach just didn't agree with what she ate for lunch.

"Thank you for helping her, Mr. White," The nurse gave a warm smile at the young man. Fortunately, those napkins came soon enough and the nurse started to wipe away some of the bile that had gotten on Alice, keeping the bucket nearby in case she had to vomit again. "Now, you take it easy, and we'll get you resting on a couch. Or would you rather return to your room?"

Byakko shook his head, smiling reassuringly at the girl and pulling her hair away from her face in case she needed to vomit again. He patted her back soothingly. "Nothing to apologise for if you're ill, Hinasaki-san," he said.

He looked up when one of the nurses approached, letting the breeze drop away. He returned the smile the nurse gave him, but kept a wary eye on her. He didn't trust them one bit and he didn't want to leave Miku alone if she was ill.

Oh gods have mercy and leniency, it was on her in all its wonderful smell. It was hard to focus on the nurse's face, and she kept blinking.

She realized, somewhere in the survival instincts of her brain, that she didn't want to go back to her room and be alone.

Alone in this place was a very, very, very bad idea. "Couch, please." Ack, her voice was so tiny and thin sounding. And her stomach still rolled. Miku swallowed hard and tried to take tiny, even breaths.

Had this been any other situation, the nurse would have corrected Leander's use of a fake name, but now was not the time for that. This poor girl was ill!

Although the nurse would have preferred that Alice would spend time recovering in her room, where it would be quiet and peaceful, Alice insisted on being left on the couch. It was almost the end of the shift, and they would be returning to their rooms soon, so the nurse decided there would be no harm done in letting Alice stay on the couch. It would probably be better for her to rest up before she would start walking.

"Alright, can you stand, Ms. Rhodes?" The nurse asked, once all the messy yellow chunks had been cleaned off as best as she could. The nurse would just have her stop by the bathrooms for a more thorough cleaning and a change of clothing once she had recovered. "I'll let you lay down on the couch as we get an extra shirt for you."

The nurse carefully stood up, waiting for Alice to steady herself before she started leading the young patient to the couch.

Byakko trailed along after the nurse when she helped Miku to her feet and led her away. He hovered as she was settled on the couch, worry obvious on his face. What had happened? She'd been fine!

The nurse was still hoverin, but Byakko flopped down on the floor next to Miku anyway. Close enough to talk to her, but far enough away to not attract the nurse's ire. "What happened?" he asked softly, looking at Miku with concerned eyes.
