Nightshift 67: Main Hallway 2-Center (Includes Sun Room halls)
[from here]
The lack of any presences continued into the next hallway and the adjoining ones that overlooked the Sun Room below. The hallways were quiet, and empty, and nothing at all what he was used to.
"We're out late," came his reasoning, and he hoped that was all there was to the state of the hallways. Timing and nothing more. He moved quickly regardless, passing along the left side hallway with only a passing glance over the railing. "The Sun Room is below us. Something's usually there... some monster or a patient that's been brainwashed..."
The Sun Room had always been that way and was on most occasions even more dangerous than heading through the back field. That, at least, had less of a chance of having anything guarding it. The Sun Room however was the most direct route to the basement and, Kurogane still wagered, to some other passage that reached the top floor. That Landel always kept the below room so well guarded was proof enough of that possibility.
"Avoid it at night unless you don't have a choice."

"You say to avoid it, yet we're going right by it. You're contradicting yourself." Which really..was normally Fai's trick. He couldn't help his curiosity though as he looked around for any sign of some sort of monster.

With those words, his steps came to a sharp halt and he glared back, warning, "If you're set on treating this like it's some game, then I'm just as fine being silent while you figure it out on your own."
Kurogane was sick of games. Everything Landel put them through had been some kind of game in the doctor's eyes, however sick and twisted it was. And the ninja had had no choice but to play along, if only for the purposes of finding a way out and surviving another day. That was how he had learned - what this place contained and what Landel could do. He hadn't wanted to let this Fai, whatever version of him it was get himself killed for a lack of experience, however Kurogane refused to play babysitter.

Turning his face away from the glare of the ninja, his expression immediately sobered. Fai knew he had to pay attention. He knew it but he still couldn't help trying to avoid it. He was scared. As much as he would never show or admit it, this world was beginning to terrify him. The changes he could see in Kurogane, the stories that he was hearing, the creepy feeling he got just from walking these halls..all of it was starting to get to him. His only defense against fear was to pretend that he wasn't. To smile and joke and tease and hope that no one would call him on it.
But Kurogane had done just that. And so now Fai was quiet. He didn't want Kurogane to leave him behind to fend for himself. He didn't want the ninja to ignore him. He just didn't know how else to cope.
/damn, hurt his feelings...
That uncertainty had made him this way. He couldn't take jokes any more than before, but now he didn't have the ability to even listen to them for a time. Not when some unknown could come at them at a moment's notice.
When Fai finally seemed to understand and looked away, Kurogane also took his attention back and sent it over the railing again, knowing he'd snapped at a memory more than he had at the magician proper. He'd fought enough monsters in the below room, but things more dangerous had happened there. This was only one of the places where Fai had come close to death, pushed over the railing and barely survived till morning. There were many other places like this throughout the building. Places where battles had been fought against friends and where others had died... twice Kurogane had seen the magician die in this place - by some illusion, he still didn't know - but both times he'd been helpless to do anything but watch.
All those times it had been a Fai who hadn't been teasing at night, one that had arrived before Kurogane and explained what he could for the ninja. Now that things were reversed, Kurogane wasn't going to even allow the chance for Fai to not take this seriously. He refused to let those things happen again.
"If you're going to be that way, then wait for morning," he said finally, turning back to their path. Nothing would kill him for it then.
He'll get over it lol
But he followed silently now, not wanting to upset the ninja any more. Wait until morning he said...Fai wondered just how far away that was. This night was already beginning to seem endless. Would things really improve when the sun came up? Perhaps the threats would decrease, but would this uneasy feeling in his stomach go away? Chances are that was unlikely.
/he'll pay him back in the morning, more like... DX
He stepped in.
