Night 67: Doyleton - Kitchin' Fixin's

[From here.]

The whole process of walking through a portal was not something Guy could get used to so easily, but he still did his best to grit his teeth and bear the unpleasant disorientation.

In this case, though, the change was so jarring that he ended up stumbling right into a counter. He grabbed onto it to keep his balance, and it was only then that he was able to take in the area around him. At first he wasn't even able to recognize the room, but the rows of shelves and the counter he was slumped against made it clear it was Doyleton.

Guy clicked on his flashlight and then aimed it at one of the shelves, where he saw a number of kitchen supplies hanging. So that's where they were...

After letting out a breath, Guy turned to the rest of the group. "So you really can get out this far." Come to think of it, wasn't there a chance that some of those zombies could be shambling around? If that was the case, then they probably shouldn't spend much time here. "We'd better be careful." For all he knew, one of those undead things was in the store with them.

Although he knew nothing should have surprised him at this point, Claude still nearly bumped into Guy while regaining his balance. When he tried to get a better look at their surroundings, the light from his hardhat illuminated a variety of pots, pans, and other kitchen utensils. His eyebrows knitted in frustration. They were in Doyleton...

Well, at least it wasn't another bathroom.

"I think I got sent out here the last time this happened," he remarked. The only reason why he couldn't be sure was because he'd been blind at the time. That memory made tonight all the more unpleasant, but Claude did his best to shake it off.

"Not too sure about how dangerous it is," he added, "but now is probably a good time to look for something useful to take back to the institute with us."

Anise immediately recognized the room they’d entered, though it took a moment for her to fully understand just how far from the institute they were. Those doors even went all the way to Doyleton! Anise wasn’t going to complain, though. This was way better than a bathroom. In fact, it was where she got the meat tenderizer she’d been using as a weapon! They totally just hit the jackpot.

“Hehe… now we’re talking!” With a gleeful grin, and what she took as Claude’s blessing (despite both his and Guy's warnings), Anise pranced over to the main counter. That was where the good stuff was: knives, shopping bags… and maybe some money too, if they were lucky! The girl easily vaulted over the counter and checked the space around the register. There, she found some plastic and paper bags of varying sizes, of which she grabbed an armful and dumped them on top of the counter, where the others could reach.

Of course, the main attraction was the glass case behind the counter, where cutlery, including some sharp-looking knives, was being kept. “It’s locked…” she murmured as she shone her flashlight over the case, disappointed but not very surprised. “Should we try and smash it?”

There was no denying that Anise was enjoying this. They could take or break whatever they wanted, and no one was going to get mad at them!

Luke, unfortunately, was the last one for the light to dawn on. It was somewhere he had never stepped foot, but Guy's strange comment made him realize they weren't still inside the institute. That Landel guy had no need for a shop, so that left only one answer. They somehow ended up in the nearby town he had visited just days ago. What had it been called? Doyleton or something.

Well, the replica had to admit it, he was pretty impressed by whatever means the Head Doctor had used to transport them. He would have even suspected some sort of fonist resonance, but he was the only seventh fonist in the group, so that destroyed that bright idea. Well, whatever! It wasn't important right now. They needed to use their time here to their advantage, and Anise's childish glee was definitely contagious. As she hopped over the clerk's counter, the redhead wandered closer to see what was so important. Her flashlight certainly drew his attention to the shiny puppies all laying side by side with one another.

"Leave it to me!" Luke decided, sounding much too eager at joining in on the vandalism. Pulling his sword away from his shoulder, he was prepared to help shatter the glass to smithereens beside Anise.
