Night 63: Road to/from Doyleton

[From here.]

But being outside was probably just as dangerous, if not more dangerous, than it was being trapped inside the bus with that nurse.

Besides the many other deformed nurses that were roaming around here, Zero caught sight of numerous forms flying overhead, casting large shadows on the ground as they passed by. They looked like...eagles. But deformed and horrific-looking, just like the nurses. At first, they seemed content to simply circle overhead, screeching, like vultures swarming above a carcass. But then many of them suddenly swooped down and headed straight for some of the prisoners running in the street.

Kind of like the one flying at Zero right now.

"Kh--!" The once-Reploid barely managed to dodge the monster as it dived for him by falling to the ground and rolling back onto his feet. The bird flew upwards again, slowly flapping its wings, then circled around as if to try again, another eagle joining it. To avoid them, Zero quickly moved out of the open, where he was obviously a target, and circled around one of the buses, keeping his back to it for cover. But he knew he wasn't going to be safe here...not when there were nurses on the ground and so many eagles above.

Not since the night he had become temporarily stronger had there been so much visible chaos... And if that one prisoner hadn't started a riot, this wouldn't be happening right now...!

As he stood contemplating the best route for escape, Zero glanced around quickly, searching the fleeing prisoners for anyone familiar or anyone who might need help. He was defenseless, so protecting someone else would only get him so far (and he certainly didn't want a repeat of two nights ago), but they all might have a better chance of survival if they grouped up...

On the other hand, maybe the bus hadn't been so bad after all. At least the monster nurse was something he could recognize, and there was only one of her. But out here...

Shit. No matter how he looked at it, it was bad out here (and thank you for that prior reinforcement, shouter). Firo followed Claude's lead and stayed low; whatever the hell those flying...things were—birds, he guessed, though he'd never heard of birds that big—he didn't want to draw their attention as long as he was unarmed.

At his roommate's question, he shook his head. "No," he answered in a low whisper, keeping an eye on one bird(?) that was currently circling overhead. "What the hell are they, anyway?"

"They're these giant birds, but--" Claude wished he had a better answer for him. Unfortunately, he was just about as stumped as Firo, even if he vividly remembered his last encounter with them.

"They only go after certain people," he hastily added. Virgins, according to the rumor, but he still thought that sounded kind of dumb. "That's why I was asking if you'd seen them before."

While Claude figured he was probably safe, he didn't want to risk putting Firo in any danger. "We should probably get moving. You think we ought to shoot for the institute?"

So they were birds after all, but... "Certain people?" he echoed in question. The behavior of birds (let alone giant, monstrous ones) wasn't something he was exactly familiar with. What kind of people would these go after? Ones that looked like easy prey?

No matter what kind of people, though, moving sounded like a great idea—especially if one of them fit the birds' tastes. "Go back there? Getting away from there seems like a better idea," he said. Maybe he was still pretty new to this whole thing, but... "We're already a pretty decent distance outside; even with getting knocked out and ending up back in our room each morning, couldn't we escape if we were... out of their range?" Someone had to be delivering them back to the room, after all, so that meant there had to be a place they could hide.

—And then again, he really was still pretty new to this. Maybe there was a reason that Claude was suggesting they head back... or maybe his suggestion was simply the reason that Claude was still there. No matter what monstrosities it held, the Institute was just a building. Alcatraz still had a leg up on it for being an island.
