Nightshift 62: Main Hallway, 1-West

[from here]

Taura took up station midway between the two halls leading back into the dormitories. Alone with her thoughts; the hall was quiet. Too quiet. Dead quiet, a little voice hissed in the back of her mind.

This was no time to be getting superstitious. It was unavoidable, really, in a profession with so much risk involved in daily operations, that those who survived found things to credit. Beyond their own skill, because they'd all seen better men/women/herms when their luck ran out, and skill only improved your odds.

Her luck was holding, tonight. Was Rita and Goku's?

Ilia moved into the busy hallway at a trudging pace. What little high the alcohol had given her was already wearing thin and her own morbid thoughts were doing little to help the situation. Her slow pace did do her a bit of good, however. She had the time to get a really good look at all the passerbys her flashlight illuminated as she walked along, and Seishin happened to be one of them.

Moving towards him, she raised her free hand in a weary wave. "Seishin. Hey."

She honestly didn't know what much more to say. They shared a strange kinship from having witnessed the death down in the basement. That made them comrades of sorts, even if they hadn't interacted a great deal before then.

Ilia didn't have to ask him how he felt. Whether he had taken Rose's death in as bad of a way as Ilia had didn't matter. But likely, if he had any decency at all, he would want to pay his respects to the little girl just as she did.

"So, I'm going to the morgue," Ilia said, a little hoarsely. She cleared her throat. "Want to come with me?"

"Silvestri-san."

Seishin turned his head to the woman, offering a nod in greeting. There was little else to be said, so he otherwise remained silent.

The morgue. Seishin hadn't guessed there was a morgue. In a way, it seemed strange that a mental hospital would have such a facility to begin with, but most mental hospitals did not have coliseums in their basements meant for cruel games of life and death.

"Yes," he answered quietly. As helpless as the former priest had been last night, it was the least he could do.

At least she was managing to keep it together. Seishin's silence may have helped. He hadn't asked how she was, and she wasn't going to say for fear of breaking down again. Dammit. She had really hoped her buzz would last longer than this.

His acceptance of her offer drew a thin smile to her lips. Glancing around, she quickly located the stairwell she wanted and headed that way, expecting him to follow.
