Nightshift 24: Stairway near Patients' Blocks

[[From here]]

Recluse peered into the darkness above before starting up the stairs. The fight with that prisoner had relieved a lot of tension. He'd won, and quite decisively. But now wasn't the time to let that blind him.

After all, he had told a pawn of his years ago- "Don't gloat about your victories until you've won the war." Maybe he should heed his own advice.

Luke really had no idea how they managed to run into another monster so quickly, but he had the feeling the cloudy thing up ahead wasn't friendly. And it wasn't, forcing Luke to duck down as it sprayed ... whatever it was at them.

"Masaru?! Masaru, are you O-"

Unfortunately for Luke, he chose to stand back up at the wrong time. The other teen wildly threw a punch.

And he managed to deck Luke right in the face.

"OW!!! MASARU, PUNCH THE OTHER WAY!"

The sylph giggled again; it liked these two new people even more than it had like Recluse. They were so silly. It swirled through the remains of the pepper spray, stirring them up to see if it could get the other boy.

Masaru had to admit, despite the effect of the spray, landing a punch like that was a satisfying feeling. That would show the bastard to fool around like that!

Or so he was thinking, until Luke spoke up. "Crap! Sorry about that!"

Okay, time to try again - he made another punch. Too bad he was still blind; it hurt too much to open his eyes quite yet. When was that stuff going to wear off, anyway?!

Damn! Masaru could punch hard. Luke was still a bit stunned and rubbed his face, wondering if the other boy broke anything. It felt like a brick hit his face, although most punches tended to leave that feeling anyway.

"Owww..."

If Luke was a bit smarter, he would have gotten out of Masaru's way. Instead, he was directly in the path of Masaru's next punch, and didn't see it coming until Masaru's fist crashed into Luke's stomach.

"OWW!!!!"

Peeved and hurting in two places, Luke grabbed Masaru and spun him around in the right direction.

"OK, punch it NOW!"

More and more fun.

There was a slight disturbance in the air as the sylph slipped around, back behind Luke, and let out its trademark giggle.

Maybe Masaru would hit his friend again.

Okay, Masaru was starting to get seriously pissed off here. His eyes burned, he was starting to have some trouble breathing, and he hadn't landed a single hit on the bastard who sprayed him.

That was it. That thing would really get it this time. He put everything he had into the next to punch, quickly feeling the sting of his fist colliding with ... ... absolutely nothing?

"...Haa?"

To hell with how much it hurt - he opening his eyes. It was a lot better than attacking blindly, so he'd have to bear with it somehow. But the thing was, even though his vision was blurry, he wasn't making anything out that looked like that cloudy thing.

"Did he run away?"

He started up the stairs after it, completely oblivious to the fact it was behind them.

It was kind of funny how that seemingly innocent giggle seemed to annoy him right down to his very core. However, the thing had a swirling cloud of something that was starting to sting his eyes, and Luke knew that this battle would be as hopeless as the last one.

That didn't stop him from wanting to kick it's ass though. But Luke figured it was best to return once he actually had a weapon capable of doing some damage and ran after Masaru, nearly tripping from his slightly impaired vision,

"Masaru! Keep running!"

The sylph pursued them for a few steps, but there was little it could do; they had already gotten far enough away that it couldn't use the same trick that it had used on Recluse.

After a few more giggles, it gave up and returned to the bottom of the stairs, waiting for its next playmate. It amused itself by gathering up as much of the pepper spray that still remained in the air as it could.
