Night 60: Cafeteria

[from here]

And here they were! It seemed like just the other night--oh wait, it had been just the other night since they had last been here. Of course, this time there were no hordes of monsters chasing after them or bursting out from under tables...yet. Yet was the key word, and as fond as Niikura was of taking his sweet time when he felt like it, he wanted to get out of the cafeteria before "yet" ran out.

"So I have no idea what to expect once we get down there," he said casually as he walked down an aisle, guessing this was as good a time as any to admit that his research had gone rather shoddily, if only to dispel some of the heavy silence that seemed to be sitting pretty in the room. Admittedly, it wasn't shoddy because of him. People just couldn't talk about what happened in the basement, which made it that much more interesting and appealing in his opinion.

Niikura edged smartly around the corner of the counter in the back and paused at the door to the kitchen. "I take that back. I do have some idea. Apparently there's a sphinx somewhere, so, y'know, it's gonna ask us a riddle so just be prepared to think outside the box a bit." He then knelt down to examine the lock. It was another one of those sketchy ones that just required some brute force or some poison from a demon lord-turned-human, whichever one happened to be available at the time.

"Anyone wanna do the honors? I'll just give it a whack otherwise."

"Oh, great," Mike muttered when Niikura said that he had no idea what they were getting into, only to mutter it again when Niikura mentioned the sphinx. "Oh, great."

When they reached the locked door and Niikura finished inspecting the lock, Mike walked up to inspect it himself. It was doable, but he didn't have the right equipment for it. He couldn't even ask Shiina for some hair pins.

Mike let out a sigh and stepped back to give Niikura room. "If I had the right stuff, it'd be a snap. Break this one open, and I can look for things I can improvise with in the kitchen."

For other locks of course. Not this one.

Oh goodie, so even Niikura didn't have any information on this infamous basement. Other than the possibility of mythological Egyptian monsters, anyway. Great. Wonderful. Couldn't get much more insane than that. But perhaps insanity was expected in an insane asylum. Go figure.

The lock seemed a little formidable, but just one padlock wasn't anything to a Shou. She would have expected he had some sort of lock-picking technique in his large repertoire but by the sound of it, a good smack was as far as he had thought. Well, maybe she could help, then.

"Wanna use my bat?" She offered the metal baseball bat freely. It was meant to bludgeon and it wouldn't lose its purpose from just one little dent.

The cafeteria was dark enough to need a light, and Rose had that taken care of. Her flashlight was buried, but the candles she'd picked up previously weren't, and one lit with a spark. It flickered warily across a vast expanse of utilitarian tables.

"As much as it pains me to say, I agree with Gamzee. Either a way will be provided, or we will make our own. For now, there are two doors left to try."

Said troll had no issue at all with completely ignoring the first part of Rose's comment and being pleased by the latter part, causing a goofy smile to remain on his face. It was a rare occasion when someone agreed with him about something, and he was honestly used to such remarks being preluded by how much the one agreeing regretted having to do so.

The way down was familiar even to him now, so Gamzee went on toward the kitchen without stopping. This was a good chance for Seishin to get acquainted with the others, and he didn't have much to add that they couldn't say a million times better. He was just happy to be along. These evening trips were enjoyable.
