Night 60: Intercom, Beginning of Night
The bone-chilling wind billowed outside as darkness fell upon the institute. But the patients had far more important things to worry about than the weather, and that became all the more apparent the moment static filtered through the intercom, and Martin Landel dropped all daytime pretenses.
"And so, at last, I've come to retake my rightful place as Head Doctor of Landel's Institute. As if those soldiers could ever replace me with something so fallible. Hah!" He let that thought hang in the air for a moment before continuing.
"Of course, I have all of you to thank for practically running the general out of town. Once you all went out of control, he had no choice but to ask me for my generous assistance. Oh, and I suppose I should thank the traitors within the general's ranks for granting you your powers again, too, since there was no way in hell that radio boy could accomplish something of that magnitude."
His words were smug and self-satisfied. Any patients listening could hear the twisted smile in his voice.
"It must have been nice for you all, having a fleeting taste of your full powers and the freedom to use them as you wish. I do hope you enjoyed it, because I'll make sure you never, ever experience it again as long as I'm alive and in charge of this institute. After all, the Eagle wouldn't have come here at all if it hadn't been for your hideous behavior -- and I wouldn't have lost her!"
The warped thud of a fist slamming against his desk sounded over the intercom, and the Head Doctor grew deathly quiet for a moment.
"That's why you only have yourselves to blame for the changes that will have to be made during the coming days. I hope you're quite pleased with yourselves. Let's just pray that we won't ever have another full military takeover on our hands, for both our sakes."
Another pause.
"Well, no use in dwelling on all that now, I suppose. Night is just beginning, and I'm sure you're all simply dying to scamper around this little rat maze, mmm? Enjoy."
The intercom slowly faded, and the doors unlocked.
