Day 60: Intercom, Evening

The intercom jingled at its standard time, with the Head Doctor still in his over-the-top, jovial mood. It seemed not even the evening light could keep down the love he held for his job.

"Good evening, everyone! I hope your soul is filled with music from last shift; I know mine is."

There again was a stretch of silence. When the Head Doctor continued, he sounded marginally disappointed.

"But now it's time to wind down the day with a bit of dinner. Tonight, we'll be serving turkey breasts and quality gravy, with sides of garlic mashed potatoes, steamed broccoli, grilled asparagus, and a small salad. For dessert, we will be having pumpkin pie with optional whipped creme. As per usual, we will have our vegetarian alternatives and a wide selection of drinks available. Turkey lovers, be sure to take advantage of the food; it'll be an entire week before you can have this delectable meat again."

He chuckled at the statement. One might have labeled it as dark.

"Anyway, enjoy! I will wish you all a good night momentarily!"

The intercom clicked off.

Another might have smiled at the attempt at humor. Instead, Tear nodded, her countenance rooted in solemnity. The soldier was thankful at least one of them had fared well; despite everything, it did instill a bit of hope in this place. She began reaching for pieces of food on her plate, eating them with little attention to the contents.

It wasn't until Shiina had spoken again that Tear felt the weight of a question. She hastily downed the potatoes in her mouth and considered her answer. Another might have placed cares for another's consideration. It would be easy, after all, to share one's worries for consumption. Shiina, regardless of who she was, and Tear were in positions that required some aspect of mutual trust. It would be so easy, given who they were.

Except Tear was Tear, and pushing worries to another was an unforgivable act. She knew she could never detail, not in the ways someone might have wanted or expected. "Oh," she replied. "I'm just having some trouble with one of the groups I'm working with. I should be fine, though. Thank you for your concern."

Hmm, group work. Tear made it sound like she was having issues with lab partners not turning in their portion of the assignment. Not a reason to make the face she had when she first came in. "Uh huh." Like Shiina was buying that.

Maybe it was something more personal, though. Shiina would have issues talking about what happened at school that final day with someone like Tear. She probably hadn't seen her own homeroom teacher and fellow pupils murdered at point-blank gunpoint or anything of that sort. If Tear was just having boy problems, then maybe it would be different. This had to be something pretty extreme.

"Y'know..." Shiina poked a bit at her asparagus now that her pie was gone. She kept her eyes down, not wanting to seem too intrusive. "I know things have been kinda crazy lately. Sometimes it's a little overwhelming. But, don't worry." A soft smile lighted on her lips. "We'll get out of here soon. I know it."
