Night 58: Sun Room

[From Here]

As they made their way down the hall way and to the doors of the Sun Room, Locke couldn't help but feel a little creeped out by how the place looked at night. It wasn't like anything had really changed, but, the shadows and silence made it seem a lot more eery than it did during the day.

Really, it wasn't even like the place itself was scary at all, but, the thought that he might miss something in the dark while unarmed and without magic made him more paranoid than he liked. He trusted Tolten to be able to handle himself, the man even said he was a knight, so Locke wasn't overly concerned there. However, if something did attack, he didn't want to be the unarmed-burden that needed protecting either.

To say the thief was 'on-guard' was a huge understatement. "All right....shall we?" Locke asked, opening the door and stepping in as quietly as possible.

Tolten was well aware that he had been this way in the day - just that very day in fact! - but he felt the same things that Locke did. There was an eerie cast to the place. It had unnerved him every time he went out. It was a dead place, and Tolten had never liked dead places. At least he wasn't alone. He felt as though he would go mad if left alone entirely at night.

He held his pipe firmly and low against his thigh, keeping the warnings of monsters fresh in his mind. He was the one with a weapon and years of the greatest military training Uhra had to offer. He had what he had wanted, the chance to lead and be a defender.

He just hoped he didn't blow it.

"Yes, of course," Tolten agreed. He took a deep breath and stuck close to Locke, slipping through a moment after.

The startled cry of warning came a fraction too late. Tolten's eyes watered and he closed them immediately. It felt as though he'd been bent over a pot of boiling spice peppers and sulfur. Or one of those magic smoke bombs used in war and crowd control. He choked against the spasms in his throat and lifted an arm to cover his nose and mouth.

Was this the poisoned air he had been warned about on his first day? Or something to do with the strange announcements that littered the nights? It didn't really matter, he decided immediately.

"Just go!" he managed to spit out between burning breaths. "Keep moving!" It was only in this room, and if they simply sped through it and out the other side, maybe they'd be safe. At least it was a large one, and any chemical in the air should rapidly dissolve...

Hopefully.

Tolten blundered himself through the Sun Room, eyes tightly closed and throat and lungs burning. It was like some great illness had seized him. Or the ghosts of wars past were haunting him through his respiratory system. What if it was poison? People died here! He had seen the notices!

Panic threatened to rise up and consume the young king, and he struggled to push it back. There was no Seth here, to grab his arm and shake him to remind him to be strong. No Sed to prod him and bully him affectionately to rise to his training and blood.

He could only take his own advice and save any panicking for a time when it was safe to do so!
