Night 58: Main Hallway, 1-Center

[from here]

Turning the corner, Vino found that, in fact, he was very much early, it seemed. Huh. There was no one yet in this central hallway, though if he looked back towards the west side of the building, that strange person with the unnatural-looking white hair had gone down that end of the big hallway. He could still see the whiteness of their hair standing out from the darkness of the atmosphere around them.

He spent a few moments watching this person, then lost interest, instead finding the nearest wall to lean against to wait for the other person to show. Healing powers! He'd be able to see them in action, right? Vino wondered what it was like, having an injury healed with the kind of abilities that this kid had. Would it be like Czeslaw's 'healing,' he wondered? That would definitely be interesting to see, wouldn't it? Watching your own injury just mend itself like that. Like magic!

But while this ability certainly could be a useful one to have, Vino hadn't decided yet whether this would be an ability he'd want in his arsenal. Felt a bit like cheating, didn't it? What would be the point in challenging yourself to do things if there was no thrill in it? (Most people would call this the 'thrill of danger,' but Vino didn't believe in such a thing for himself.)

If you could always heal yourself from any injury, then how could you tell the difference between being alive and... not? There'd be no difference then, that's what!

A pause in his thoughts as Vino checks around again to see if he can spot any familiar head of spiky hair. Nope, no one fitting the description yet. He settles in to wait.

He didn't respond right away when the light skimmed over him. In fact, it wasn't for a few seconds after Badou called his name that he actually looked up and seemed to see the other for the first time. Heine shook his head once, hoping this dream would leave with it, but no, he was still standing in the dark hallway with his partner, who oddly enough, didn't reek of smoke. Great. Maybe they'd have to flip a coin to see which one of them got to stay sane for the night.

You look like you've seen a ghost, man.

Heine narrowed his eyes. If this was a dream, did they have to give Badou all the ironically apt lines? A ghost. Had to be that word, didn't it? Shit. If only he could write it off that easily. A ghost wasn't solid. Or warm. Or still breathing. But she should be dead, what else could he call her?

"Where do they take the kids?" he said finally, ignoring Badou's concern. "There's a little girl. She looks- Fuck- she looks just like Lily. She is Lily."

Badou frowned, realizing too late that he'd said something stupid, but apologies weren't really at the forefront of his mind. Heine hadn't bitched him out for being late, so something must be really wrong. "The kids? What are you--"

Lily..? Oh. Shit. Lily. That was a name he actually remembered. Heine seemed to mumble it whenever he got depressed, which was pretty frequently, and he'd told the story not long ago. Badou specifically remembered something about ripping her apart. Not that he was completely surprised: this place could bring anyone back, and that girl had the same things done to her as Heine.

"They don't take them anywhere." Badou replied carefully. "They get let out, same as us."

If Heine had seen her dragged off for experiments he wouldn't be standing in the hallway right now, so it must have been during the day, which meant she probably wasn't an institute monster either. This was gonna suck. Badou cursed under his breath.

"We could head back to the women's wing, but if she's leaving her room tonight chances are she's already out."

Each mention of her name brought him a little closer to to the edge, as though he couldn't already feel those cold hands around his neck or the dark whispers in his ear. He hated feeling so fucking helpless. He didn't even know where to start looking for Lily, let alone where she might be, where she might have gone, nothing.

"Shit," he growled, pressing his back into the wall. What kind of monsters were they going to start throwing out at them? What if Lily snapped and no one was around to stop her? And what about you? You're not the picture of health yourself.

"Where would she- Where do people go here at night?" That was the hard part. He didn't know the layout, much less where to start looking. What if she was still back in her room, hiding in a corner? Or worse, tearing up the other patients and laughing as she painted the walls with their blood.

His muscles twitched as he visibly fought for control, clenching his fists as he pushed away from the wall. "I have to find her."

Fade out?

Heine was like an angry dog on an extremely short leash. Badou couldn't remember the last time he'd been so anxious about anything. To make matters worse, he might know the layout better, but he didn't have the first clue about where a little girl might go. If she was smart, she'd be keeping her head down no matter how much damage she could do.

Where do people go? Was he fucking serious? Badou swept an arm out trying to encompass the entire institute in a single gesture. "Do I look like a fucking GPS to you? Maybe you should have asked her to wait for you or stay the hell inside if you knew you were gonna shit yourself looking for her all night."

So maybe he should be more sensitive about Heine teetering on the edge of insanity because his dead girlfriend had come back to life but he was about twenty cigarettes short of sympathetic towards anyone right now. And he was probably going to have to abandon Alle because Heine wasn't gonna stand here waiting another five minutes. Shit. At this rate he was gonna have to suck cock before Alle forgave him for the last few days.

"Let's head back to the women's hall anyway." Badou muttered, turning back toward the patient blocks. "Even if she's not there maybe someone's seen her."
