Night 70: Sun Room

[from here]

Kratos swept the Sun Room as soon as he entered, checking for anything that might be lurking in the shadows. The room was open to the hall outside, but it still felt several degrees colder - his body's way of warning him, perhaps, that this place was dangerous. Funny, considering how much of his time was spent here during the day...

There was nothing to be found, but he didn't believe for a second that things would stay that way if they waited. They needed to keep moving, and quickly.

"The library's to the right, if I remember," he said to Castiel, gesturing toward the closed door with his flashlight. "You go through first; I'll hold up the rear." His hand throbbed; the crystal was slowly stirring from its slumber in anticipation of a fight even though the room was still eerily silent.

[From here.]

The Sun Room looked exactly the same as the first time Skulduggery visited it after dark with Rita. Innocent, really, for as much as the Sun Room of a mental hospital could look innocent while completely dark. No fights had been fought in here, although someone - or something - did pass through recently.

Skulduggery could hazard a guess. The library door was open. If Castiel was really going to investigate the secret stairway in there as he said, he was likely the only one to disturb the air in here. And if he passed through without any trouble, they would as well. There was no point in guarding the inside of a room that had already been well guarded on the outside.

Skulduggery didn't mention any of this to Gabe - not the fights outside, which might have done anything from spooking the angel to convincing him he needed to help whoever had been attacked, and not Castiel's potential movements. None of it was necessary to mention. Instead, Skulduggery strode ahead towards the cafeteria doors with much less caution. "We'll be fine through here. It's the kitchens I'm worried about. Still not seeing anything?"

"No, nothing." In a way, Skulduggery's confidence was comforting. Even with his shadow flickering across the floor, a skeleton in a suit and ostensibly something over which to be concerned, the way he approached the room easily was encouraging. Gabe had no trouble letting him take the lead in such a large room. It opened into the sky, but for the first time in his life Gabe couldn't look at it.

Clear skies and a million stars against the blackness of a new moon's night. Freedom. An entire cosmos over his head, and he was bound here on Earth in an Institute of horror.

For the first time he understood, a little, how Lucifer felt.

"It's been a while since then. Long enough to wear off, I think." He couldn't keep the relief out of his voice at that fact.

He just hoped Skulduggery was equally right about the cafeteria. Gabe had never been in there before, not at this time of night. Taking a deep breath to soothe his pounding heart, the Archangel followed the skeleton through the doors.
