Day 70: Intercom, Dinner

Unlike the previous week, everything went smoothly for the patients on the bus ride back. No rowdy patients causing a crash, no sudden onslaught of monsters, just a pleasant ride back up the mountain. When they reached the unloading area in front of the institute, the nurses were quick to shuttle all of the patients off of the vehicles and then indoors to get to their rooms for dinner. If the nurses seemed rushed, they didn't appear willing to explain why, but anyone who'd noticed the quickly dimming sky would understand what the hurry was about.

But everything went as planned and all the patients made it safely back to their rooms. Better than that, dinner was waiting for them: a plate of lamb curry with some basmati rice and a salad on the side.

As they started to eat, the intercom came on, a little bit later than it usually would have. "Welcome back, everyone, welcome back! I have to admit, it was almost too quiet while you were all gone, but I'm glad to hear that you've made it back safely. Please feel free to dig into your dinner and get some rest. I'm sure you're all tired out after a busy day down in Doyleton."

It seemed that the patients couldn't get away from hearing the Head Doctor's cheerful voice at least once in the space of a day, but thankfully the message was short. The intercoms shut off, leaving the patients to discuss the day with their roommates.

He and Ishida had stopped at the Tasty Burger after they'd left the hardware store, and while Lloyd hadn't eaten all that much there, apparently it had been enough that the offer of curried lamb wasn't as tempting as it should have been. Even so, Lloyd set his new utility belt on his bed, along with the toy radio and the batteries the nurse had given him when he'd asked how to make it work. Then he sat down at his desk, staring at the food halfheartedly. He should probably eat something at least, before the night got started. Food worked wonders for restoring energy, and he knew he would need every bit that he could get.

Picking up his fork, he glanced at the door. Claude would probably come in soon. He hadn't seen his roommate at all since last night. Not since the nurses had come in and...

Lloyd winced. After what had happened, the other man would want to know if he was all right. If their positions had been reversed, Lloyd would want to know what happened, too. But explaining what the doctor had done after he'd been taken...

Still, Claude deserved to know something at least, and be reassured that Lloyd was mostly all right. Lloyd sighed and tried to steel himself for the conversation, then deliberately took a bite of his food. It wasn't until he happened to look over at Claude's bed that he realized he wasn't alone. His roommate was already there, and already fast asleep.

Oh. Huh. Looked like he was off the hook for now.
