Kirk's pace barely slowed when he retrieved his flashlight and flicked it on, although he did pause in the middle of the stairs to make sure Uhura was following. His flashlight beam danced around the narrow space, crafting strange shadows out of the stair railings... but nothing unnaturally strange. Not too surprising. As monotonous as the days were in Landel's Institute, Kirk didn't take the Head Doctor as being the type to repeat his "black magic" tricks, as Marc had put it. The man on the radio had implied it would be quiet tonight — a relative term, in this place.
"The second floor's supposed to be more dangerous than the first," Kirk remarked once Uhura had almost caught up, and he headed up again, taking the steps two at a time. The slightly battered aluminium baseball bat swung by his side. "Not sure I believe it, but I guess we'll see."
