When someone smiled at him, it was his instinctual response to smile back - though trying to grin around a mouthful of toast and brown, sticky goop was harder than it sounds. When the smile wasn't rueful or condescending or sinister, which in his experience had been the majority... unless he was on another world. Those folk usually seemed nice.
