Day 44: breakfast

Yuffie had died.

No, really. Seriously. She had actually died. Bleeding all over the place, making a horrid, sticky mess and scaring the hell out of Suzaku; she remembered it clearly. Kind of. Sort of. Through the blood loss, the pain, and the visions. Through Aerith's voice whispering in her ear, Cloud's stricken eyes, and her own panic. As bad nights went, it had been Bad, capital B and all the trimmings, and oh, god. She sat, trembling on the edge of her bed, eyes closed and hands pressed hard over her racing heart. The by-play between Landel—Landel!—and Lydia barely even sunk in. There was nothing in the whole world, any world, that could prepare you for something like…

Had it all been some kind of hallucination?

Had she imagined the whole thing?

No… She didn't think so. Nightmarish or not, Yuffie knew reality. But if it had been real, how was she alive now? That kind of pain wasn't something you could just cook up, was it? She thought about it all the way to the cafeteria, drifting behind her nurse without focus or intent. Maybe if she tried to stay clinical, tried to step back… But she'd never been good at that when things got personal. And every time she closed her eyes or blinked, she swore that the scenes played back to her, like an overused commercial on a crappy channel on a crappy TV, in a run-down dump of an inn that smelled like mothballs and yesterday's breakfast.

The scent of blood and damp, rotted wood clogged her nose. Disgusted, Yuffie shoved her bowl of cereal—handed to her by a clucking Plucky—off to the side so that she could melt into her chair, palm heels scrubbing against her eyes. Too much. This was… Too much. She couldn't even paste a plastic smile on her face to make herself feel better. Her usual shield, the white noise of inane babble that could filter out almost any crisis, was in tatters all around her. Five minutes, she gave herself.

Five minutes (not) to think, five minutes to get her act together, because there was no way she could let herself shatter here. No way…

[Closed to Sheena]

"Oh. Um, okay," Loz murmered, still kind of confused. Then again, maybe he wouldn't like to visit the Digital World, if it was gonna confuse him.

After finishing his eggs, the Remnant asked, "DigiGnomes, what are those?"

[identity profile] brooklynisangry.livejournal.com 2009-09-20 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"'s a neat place, just weird, 's all." And dangerous, especially if you were stuck at a low level and couldn't digivolve.

"They're these little flying, glowing guys that just make squeaky noises an' can make random stuff happen whenever they want." Except for digivolving, or at least probably, 'cause that was what Calumon did.

[identity profile] oldestremnant.livejournal.com 2009-09-20 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sure sounds weird," Loz said. Sounded just as weird as this asylum, if not more so.

"Neat," The Remnant tried to picture them, and ended up thinking of them as something like glowing, magic birds. "Don't think we have anything like that in my world."

[identity profile] brooklynisangry.livejournal.com 2009-09-20 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, but it's better 'n here most a the time. Bad stuff still goes down there too, though." He'd fallen under the category of 'bad stuff' before.

"I think they're only in th' Digital World, but the lil guys can be sneaky."

[identity profile] oldestremnant.livejournal.com 2009-09-20 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sounds like bad stuff is everywhere, no matter where you are," Loz said. "Lots of bad stuff happens in my world." Kadaj had talked about all sorts of bad things had happened before the three of them were even born.

"Kinda wish I could see one," The Remnant said. "They sound neat." Plus, he was also curious as to what they were like.

[identity profile] brooklynisangry.livejournal.com 2009-09-20 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah. But there's always good guys ta try and straighten things out, right?" They'd certainly straightened him out, that was for sure.

"Well, ya never know where they turn up next, so maybe you could. ...I'd draw one, but 'm not good at that."

[identity profile] oldestremnant.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Loz smiled, "Yeah, you're right." Just like he and his brothers had tried to straighten things out by finding Mother and making everything right.

"I hope so. And you don't have to draw me one. Maybe I'll know one if I see one." After all, how many kinds of glowing, flying, magic creatures were there out there?

[identity profile] brooklynisangry.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
"'s good that there is, or I'd still be a real screw-up." He'd been out of control, he really had. If he hadn't gotten stopped, then he wasn't sure what would have happened, but it would have been even worse.

"Yeah, there's not much like 'em." Well, there were plenty of little flying guys, but none of them really looked like DigiGnomes.

[identity profile] oldestremnant.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Really?" Loz asked. Just what had Beelzemon done to be a screw up? Loz had a hard time picturing his friend as a screw up.

"I'll know it when I see one then," Loz repeated, confirming it to himself. Plus, if those things could apparently 'make things happen', then maybe he could get one to bring his brothers and Mother back to him.

[identity profile] brooklynisangry.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah. When I first digivolved I was outta control. Just wanted more power, an' that meant... Meant killing other Digimon an' loading their data. Everythin' I did then was bad, but worst was killin' a Tamer's partner. Th' guy was named Leomon. He tried ta stop me, but it didn' work 'till one a them finally got through ta me after I'd already done more damage." He didn't want to say it, but he shouldn't hide it, it just wouldn't be right.

[identity profile] oldestremnant.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Loz listened closely to Beelzemon, leaning forward with his elbows on the table. So Beelzemon had killed people, huh? Loz had done that too, and had even almost killed Big Brother and one of his friends.

Still, the way Beelzemon spoke, it sounded like he'd regretted it. It also sounded like that Leomon guy hadn't really been playing with him. Loz didn't like the sound of that. It just didn't sound fair. Killing only came after winning, and only if Loz didn't like them.

When Beelzemon finished, Loz said, "Well, that's over now, isn't it? You're not out of control and killing people now."

[identity profile] brooklynisangry.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah. 've done what I can ta make up for it, 'least for now." He'd help Renamon out if she ever asked him. ...Even if she didn't ask him, cause he didn't think she'd say soon enough if she had a problem.

"An' I finally set things right with my Tamers, so it'll prolly never happen again." He hoped it didn't. If it did, then he wasn't worth saving again.

[identity profile] oldestremnant.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Well there you go then," Loz said. After all, the Remnant had always done whatever he could to make things up those few times he'd made his brothers mad or upset.

"You must really like your Tamers, huh?" Maybe they were to Beelzemon what Kadaj and Yazoo were to Loz.

[identity profile] brooklynisangry.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
"Guess so." It was nice that Loz thought he wasn't horrible. He hadn't met all that many people that hadn't known what he did. Or he hadn't Badda-Boom'd up the face when he was Impmon.

"They're good kids. Used ta fight a lot, but they realized that was why I ran away, so they promised not to ever again." He missed those two, but he hadn't been expecting to ever see them again anyway, with what had happened right before he came here.

[identity profile] oldestremnant.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, you're Tamers are pretty young, huh?" Loz said with interest. He didn't really think it was weird, since Kadaj looked younger than him. He immediately pictured Beelzemon with a couple of teenagers.

"Yeah, I know I'd hate it if my brothers fought all the time," He sighed. "Although, Yazoo and I fight sometimes."

[identity profile] brooklynisangry.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
"They're four. Real young fer humans. They was always fightin' and... yeah. It wasn' good." He didn't really want to think about that, it was different than when he'd been out of control, somehow.

[identity profile] oldestremnant.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
"Four?" Loz raised his eyebrows in surprise. "Are they... actually four? I mean, were they born four years ago but look older?" The Remnant didn't have much experience with kids, except for the ones he and his brothers had kidnapped in order to find Mother.

[identity profile] brooklynisangry.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
"Really four. Little kids, 'bout this tall," Beelzemon held a hand a few feet off the ground. "All the Tamers were kids, I dunno how old, but a bunch older 'n Ai an' Mako." He was glad they'd stayed well away from the D-Reaper, and he hadn't had to Biomerge to get to Mega. They stayed safe while he got his butt kicked, which was the best outcome he could've really hoped for with what they were up against.

[identity profile] oldestremnant.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Loz gave Beelzemon a surprised expression and gave a silent "oh". "Must be weird being partners with little kids."
