Day 44: breakfast

Yuffie had died.

No, really. Seriously. She had actually died. Bleeding all over the place, making a horrid, sticky mess and scaring the hell out of Suzaku; she remembered it clearly. Kind of. Sort of. Through the blood loss, the pain, and the visions. Through Aerith's voice whispering in her ear, Cloud's stricken eyes, and her own panic. As bad nights went, it had been Bad, capital B and all the trimmings, and oh, god. She sat, trembling on the edge of her bed, eyes closed and hands pressed hard over her racing heart. The by-play between Landel—Landel!—and Lydia barely even sunk in. There was nothing in the whole world, any world, that could prepare you for something like…

Had it all been some kind of hallucination?

Had she imagined the whole thing?

No… She didn't think so. Nightmarish or not, Yuffie knew reality. But if it had been real, how was she alive now? That kind of pain wasn't something you could just cook up, was it? She thought about it all the way to the cafeteria, drifting behind her nurse without focus or intent. Maybe if she tried to stay clinical, tried to step back… But she'd never been good at that when things got personal. And every time she closed her eyes or blinked, she swore that the scenes played back to her, like an overused commercial on a crappy channel on a crappy TV, in a run-down dump of an inn that smelled like mothballs and yesterday's breakfast.

The scent of blood and damp, rotted wood clogged her nose. Disgusted, Yuffie shoved her bowl of cereal—handed to her by a clucking Plucky—off to the side so that she could melt into her chair, palm heels scrubbing against her eyes. Too much. This was… Too much. She couldn't even paste a plastic smile on her face to make herself feel better. Her usual shield, the white noise of inane babble that could filter out almost any crisis, was in tatters all around her. Five minutes, she gave herself.

Five minutes (not) to think, five minutes to get her act together, because there was no way she could let herself shatter here. No way…

[Closed to Sheena]

Asch sat up and looked around. Visions of Van were finally fading. Of course Van hadn't been here last night. He hadn't been at the institute for days now. Asch knew that, but still, it had been...

The intercom came on, interrupting his thoughts. Was that the head doctor? So he wasn't dead. Of course he wasn't. Weird things had been going on, maybe outside of Landel's control, but the man himself was still there somewhere. He sounded a bit out of it, though. Something had obviously happened, but Asch had no idea what that something really could be.

The nurse inevitably came, inevitably called him Luke, and inevitably led him to the cafeteria. The routing was predictable for now, and Asch decided to live with that. He wasn't sure he liked the choice of food, but the nurse put some stuff on his plate and he took it. Mostly, he just wanted to get away from her; she got on his nerves pretty good.

He sat down at a table and poked at his food before taking a bite. Could have been worse, that was for sure.

[For Skuld]

Skuld woke up curled in a ball under her blankets; she was really scared, and she wasn't even sure why. She could hear the intercom, but... she sat straight up when she remembered Landel hadn't been heard in a while, and they'd heard something like him being killed. Damn it all--why couldn't he at least have stayed dead?

She had no desire to get out of bed, but after some coaxing from her nurse, she went along. Not because of anything the woman said, but because she had things to do. Most importantly, talk to a few of the club leaders.

Problem was, she couldn't find any of them, since she only knew Hitsugaya... sighing, she took her tray and just sat down in the nearest open spot. Out of habit, she murmured, "Good morning."

[identity profile] remnantsofflame.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Asch wasn't expecting company, but as usual, company found him. This time, it was a face he didn't recognize. She seemed upset about something, but it wasn't really his business and he didn't honestly care too much, but...

But you never knew who could be a potential ally in this place, and chances were that he could use allies besides just Zex. He wasn't sure about that Tanaka guy, and after what happened last night...

He had no idea if they were even alive.

The events of the previous nights rushed through his head as if a thick fog had cleared, and he tried hard to keep his features steady. He'd go straight to the board and try to find them after breakfast.

"...Morning," he somehow managed.

[identity profile] innovator-skuld.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Skuld looked at her breakfast tray, then shoved it aside. She was hungry, but she didn't actually want to eat right now. "Our rooms are supposed to be safe," she muttered darkly. She wasn't making much sense--nothing had actually come into her room--but she didn't care.

Looking at the redhead, though, she realized she might be lucky to only have experienced as much as she had. "Um... rough night for you, too?" She figured she knew the feeling, but honestly, leaving her room as rarely as she did shielded her from going through all that much. Still, what little she did experience frightened her more than she wanted to admit.

[identity profile] remnantsofflame.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 09:00 am (UTC)(link)
"I think some people had it much worse than I did," he said, in answer to her question. Zex and Tanaka had...they were...

He himself hadn't been injured at all. Freaked out and not sure of what to do to help, but not at all injured. It was almost worse that way. He'd rather die than be helpless, and he could say that with certainty; he'd died once, after all.

He leveled his gaze at her, more because he needed a focal point than anything else. "So there were strange things going on all over, then, not just where I was...?"

[identity profile] innovator-skuld.livejournal.com 2009-09-24 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
"From what I hear." Skuld was looking more at her juice than at him. "I didn't leave my room, since I didn't have anybody to go with. I have a weapon, but I'd just made somebody else's and got way more worn out than I should've, so..." It sounded like staying put had been a good call on her part, but then again, she stayed in her room so often that it had to be a good idea at least once in a while.

Ugh, she really needed to figure out what she was doing here. Maybe Hitsugaya could help, and if he couldn't she'd find Yuffie again.

[identity profile] remnantsofflame.livejournal.com 2009-09-24 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Asch tilted his head. Wait, so this little girl could make weapons? He supposed stranger things had happened. She couldn't have been that much younger than him, could she? Appearances could be deceiving.

"You can make weapons?" he asked, a little abruptly.

[identity profile] innovator-skuld.livejournal.com 2009-09-24 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah--I'm Skuld, one of the alchemists here." He hadn't heard? Well, maybe he was new here. Then again, it wasn't like she stood out that much; she wasn't even the only kid in the Cooking Club.

She really needed to make changes in the way she took commissions, but it shouldn't hurt anything to add another person to her list while she figured out what.

[identity profile] remnantsofflame.livejournal.com 2009-09-24 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Recognition clicked in Asch's brain. This was Skuld, the girl that was going to make his sword. Or so he hoped.

"I'm Asch. I spoke to you on the bulletin about getting a sword made, actually, I just didn't know what you looked like."

He wondered if there was a way to ask about timeframe without being really rude. He wasn't generally one who cared about politeness, but he didn't want to piss off the person who was going to make him a sword, either.

[identity profile] innovator-skuld.livejournal.com 2009-09-25 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh!" Oops--it would really be nice if she could know peoples' names just by looking at them or something. "You're on my list, but there's kind of a lot of people ahead of you." She wasn't entirely sure what people did for makeshift weapons, but if he still needed one he probably knew something about it. She'd seen people with closet rods, for example, even if she personally sure wouldn't want to try fighting with one.

[identity profile] remnantsofflame.livejournal.com 2009-09-28 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
He frowned, unable to stop himself. "How many people?" he asked. "Is there anything I can do to get higher up on the list? I already have the materials." He wasn't very hopeful about the situation, but it never hurt to try. The meat cleaver was all right, and the pipe was something he could handle, but there was nothing like an actual sword.

[identity profile] innovator-skuld.livejournal.com 2009-09-28 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
"Um..." Skuld mentally counted, although it was difficult when not everyone was sure they would even need her services or not. "About ten, but there's usually cancellations--people get given or find their own weapons, or disappear before their turn comes up."

Still, it would be a while before she got to him, and there wasn't much she could do about that. "I don't usually move the list around unless people just want something small that I can do along with someone else's weapon. If you just ask for a short sword, then maybe."

[identity profile] remnantsofflame.livejournal.com 2009-09-28 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Asch sighed and pushed his hair out of his eyes. "So it's still a week wait?" he asked. He wondered, internally, if there was anyone else here who could make a weapon. There had to be something he could do. He already had the damn materials after all!

He knew it wasn't exactly Skuld's fault. She couldn't help how long it took, or whatever else. But he was still annoyed; he couldn't help that.

[identity profile] innovator-skuld.livejournal.com 2009-09-29 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
"Somewhere around there." Skuld could understand where he was coming from; she would have been mad if she had to wait, too. "You can ask the other alchemists if they have slots open sooner."

She wondered how badly would it go over if she mentioned that she was starting to require people on her list to do their favors before she made them anything...

[identity profile] remnantsofflame.livejournal.com 2009-09-29 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, maybe I'll post on the board about it," he said. He wasn't sure who the 'other' alchemists were, or if they were reliable. Not that he really knew if Skuld was reliable, either, but that wasn't the point right now. "You know how many other alchemists there are?" The word still felt funny on his tongue; it wasn't one he was familiar with. He'd heard it a few times now, but he wasn't entirely sure what it meant. Making pipes into swords somehow, but that made no actual sense. He just had to go along with it.

He noticed the nurse coming and glared in her general direction. He was sick of feeling like he was constantly being followed by a babysitter or something. The whole thing was ridiculous.

"Hey, if there's any chance of progressing on that list of yours, let me know?" he asked, trying to sound hopeful. He wasn't very good at hopeful.

[identity profile] innovator-skuld.livejournal.com 2009-09-29 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Skuld shook her head; she could name a few of them, but probably not all. "I'll let you know when it's your turn." It wasn't much, but she couldn't help that. I'd make everybody's at once, right now, if I could.

She could tell he wasn't happy, but she wasn't either. At least he didn't dare snap at her for it.

[identity profile] remnantsofflame.livejournal.com 2009-09-29 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
He looked like he wanted to say something else, but he managed to shut his mouth. There wasn't really much else to say; he'd have to check the bulletin board for leads, or post there to the other alchemists.

He hated waiting, but what choice did he have?

The nurse came and collected him to take him off to the showers. Luckily, she didn't call him Luke in front of anyone this time.
