DAY 43: CAFETERIA, MORNING

Where was Blitzwing?

Lugnut ignored the nurse's fussing over his foot, even as it howled objections to his ill treatment of it the night before, pounding through the town in search of his wingmate, reportedly helpless and injured by an attack the night before-- and not finding him, not seeing even a glimpse of his crazy triple-changing ally.

Snarling at the nurse, but restraining himself from shows of violence-- Blitzwing would mock him if he showed up drugged already, and he would be useless to Megatron like that--he made his way impatiently to the cafeteria, stopping for just long enough to post an urgent notice on the board.

Where was he?

Looming in the middle of the cafeteria, he took the tray the nurse handed him (filled with disgusting human fuel, didn't she know he didn't have time to eat, not when his wingmate was missing?) and ignored it, watching for Blitzwing, where was he?

He refused to think about what might have happened to a wheelchair-bound, drugged, incapacitated warrior, with the swarms of monsters flooding around him, clawing and biting...

The last thing Scar knew before waking up in his room was the rather...odd intercom announcement. Everything suggested that the headdoctor might've been bitten by his own dog. Was the man dead? But that almost seemed too good to be true.

Either way, he was no longer in that crammed space anymore. The former lion couldn't help but to be relieved. He hid the steel pipe in the closet and cast another glance at the wound on his lower arm. It still hurt, but they had covered it up by some strange, white cloth. It was probably the human way of treating wounds, but still the former lion tugged at it questionably.

"Mr. Irons, please stop tugging at your bandage!" The comment was so sudden that Scar jumped in surprise before he noticed the nurse had already entered his room. After regaining his composure, he was given the choice between various rooms; the cafeteria, the sun room or the chapel. His stomach growled before he could answer, so the nurse insisted it'd be best to bring him to the cafeteria for something to eat.

Scar sat down at an empty table, nurse carrying the plate and setting it in front of him. She still didn't trust him to bring his meal to a table without accidentally spilling it over the floor, obviously. After she had left, he cast a disdainful glance towards his food. Pancakes were one of the few things he knew by name by now, but that hardly mattered. He'd rather have something more familiar, but it had already became apparent they wouldn't serve zebra or antelope anytime soon.

Something had changed in the night, that much was obvious from the moment Brainiac 5 woke up to the automated announcement. Personal consoles and welcome bags? Federal training sponsorships? That and something he'd observed the night before were beginning to make him look more closely at his theories about this place. Which was no doubt of some benefit, as he was more than a little bored with being confined to this wheelchair.

"It's just until your foot has healed, Michael," the nurse said soothingly as she pushed him into the cafeteria. "And with the mess you made of your shoulder, you can't use a crutch, so it's your own fault."

He didn't quite flinch at that, though it was a near thing. The last thing Brainiac 5 wanted or needed was a reminder of his recent past. Particularly when he was trying his best to forget about it and focus on what was important. Nonetheless... he couldn't keep himself from glancing around, checking the room for a familiar head of red or blond hair as his nurse left him briefly to collect his breakfast tray, and it was only once he'd verified that neither Luxord or Grell were in the area that he relaxed a little.

"Now, I want you to actually eat this time," his nurse scolded after she'd returned and moved him to a spare space at an occupied table. "I noticed you haven't eaten much of anything the last couple of days. I know you miss Kal, but this has to stop or else you'll be taken to the medical wing and treated there," she continued. "So please just eat something."

She gave him a stern look and Brainiac 5 sighed, taking a bite of his cereal mostly to appease her. A couple more were needed before she finally left and he glanced over at who he'd been set opposite. Something was familiar about the man's face, and it took him a moment to place him.

"Oh," he said, frowning slightly. "It's you."

Well, that certainly wasn't the most polite greeting he had ever received.

"Good morning," Scar responded flatly. "I am delighted to see you as well." It went without saying that that comment had been sarcastic.

If he didn't knew any better, he'd say that these nurses somehow had a sixth sense when they needed to pick someone to drag their charges over to. That, or they were simply horrible with making their choices and they didn't know about it. He couldn't decide which was the case, but that hardly mattered. It would only come down to the fact that these females were rather irritating.

But then again, he supposed there could've been a worse choice. Like that Rould, for instance.

Brainiac 5's eyes narrowed, but he didn't say anything in answer to the obvious sarcasm. In fact, he was nearly tempted to say nothing at all to the other man, but as he caught a glimpse of the bandage wrapped around the other's arm, his curiosity got the better of him.

"Is that from last night, or something else?" he asked around, stirring his cereal absently.

Oh dear, the boy had narrowed his eyes to him. Scar nearly rolled his eyes. Honestly, what did the other expect with such a greeting?

Instead of the silent treatment, there was a rather...unexpected question. "I have indeed received it last night." he said after a moment. "Pray tell, how did I deserve the rather sudden interest? Or was it mere curiosity?"

Because honestly, the king wasn't even half as interested how Brianiac 5 here had received his own injuries.

"Simply curiosity, nothing more," Brainiac 5 answered dismissively. "I wondered if there was something more to it than your own inability to protect yourself against the creatures here."

He gave the cereal another stir and tried to convince himself that he wanted to eat it - he knew he needed to, but it wasn't so easy to convince himself that it was actually appealing. Ignoring the man opposite for the moment, he glanced around the cafeteria once more to just... reassure himself that he wasn't in any danger, and tensed up immediately when he spotted Luxord in the room.

Luxord was in the room, and he hadn't seen him come in. He hadn't been keeping a close enough eye on the room, and the man had just walked by without him noticing. And if he'd done that, then what else might Brainiac 5 have missed because he hadn't been paying attention?

His breakfast was entirely forgotten now as he whipped his head around to rapidly scan the room again. Had Grell...? No. He wasn't here. Just Luxord. And he could see Luxord, so as long as he kept the man within his field of vision, he'd know if anything was going to happen.

His heart felt like it was pounding in his ears, and his breathing was harsher, but he could deal with this. He had to.

In a way, the comment was amusing. Especially considering the one saying it was more injured than he was. "I see," Scar said. "And you are so much better at avoiding injuries, I'm certain. I'd almost ask you for advice."

He picked at his food, noticing the boy tensing before whipping his head around rapidly. The former lion raised an eyebrow at the gesture, wondering. To top it off, the boy's pace of breathing changed. How curious...

"Well, well. Someone seems rather stressed this morning."

[identity profile] emotionl4arobot.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Brainiac 5 spared a brief glance for the other man but kept his focus mostly on Luxord and the doors into the cafeteria. "The creatures around during the night had nothing to do with my injuries," he said flatly. "And I'm not stressed, merely... cautious."

Perhaps a little too cautious, he had to admit, but... the nurses had been of no help whatsoever the day before - in fact they'd encouraged Luxord to speak with him - so it was obvious that he couldn't rely on any assistance there.

"Another patient, then?" Scar said as he continued to pick at his pancakes. A logical assumption, as the brat someone didn't seem like the type to inflict them on himself. Way too arrogant and close-minded for such a thing. "Well, I suppose you have not made many friends with that bulletin post of yours. It goes without saying that some individuals are rather violent, after all."

He followed the boy's glance, and noticed that Brianiac 5 had been paying attention to a certain man who had introduced himself as Rould. He slightly narrowed his eyes at the insolent man before returning his gaze.

"If anyone is stupid enough to attack during the daytime, I pity their lack of brains," Scar pointed out dryly. Even the riot some time ago had little effect.

[identity profile] emotionl4arobot.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Brainiac 5's gaze darkened. "...yes, another patient," he admitted grudgingly. "And despite my behaviour over the information board, I hardly think that a reaction like this is acceptable." Of course, he doubted that the other man would agree, but he felt the need to say it anyway. If only to remind himself.

"And I'm not worried about attack during the day, even if the presence of the nurses doesn't seem to deter some people very much." Most days it seemed unlikely that a meal could pass without someone starting something after all. But it wasn't that idea that worried him. It was what Luxord or Grell might say, and the idea of them coming anywhere near him without him being able to stop them.
