Suzaku jerked back in turn. That comment was true, so why did it hurt? Was he such a hypocrite that he wouldn't consider Lelouch a friend, but then couldn't stand hearing him say the same? Or maybe it was just that it was said with such vitriol. But why? Once again Suzaku was completely lost in a sea of Lelouch's obscure motivations.
Perhaps -- was that what Lelouch was thinking -- no, that was ridiculous. He'd cared for Nunnally, but beyond that, when had he ever displayed the slightest emotion for anyone? Suzaku didn't know if Lelouch had ever even cared at all, or if everything had just been a lie. Then again, with the side of Lelouch he'd seen the night before, he knew he'd been reading him wrong in some respects. And so he had no idea how Lelouch really felt about their lost friendship. He'd assumed it had been treated in the same manner as the lives Lelouch had deemed necessary to end, but maybe that wasn't true. In the end, he didn't know, he just didn't know. And he couldn't stand that anymore, because Lelouch owed it to him to stop hiding things, with everything Suzaku was giving up. Because, goddammit, he was still furious over what had happened to Dean and Sam.
"I expect you to be honest with me," he returned coolly, following Lelouch into his room. He couldn't expect Lelouch to treat him as a friend, not when he didn't want to return the favor. But he was still groping after that elusive creature that was Lelouch's true self.
