The opening wasn't just a pleasantry, although he did feel compelled to observe a few more of the rules of etiquette with the girl than with the people he'd been talking to lately. Indy was interested to see whether his field sounded familiar to her--might be a good way to test how much she knew about this world before she made any kind of claim. So far, she seemed normal enough (pink hair aside, but maybe that was normal for 2009), but so had a lot of the people he'd met so far who were reeling off ridiculous origin stories.
